Infact there is intresting story about how Adi Sankarcharyaa happen to work on the Bhasyaa on Vishnu Sahasranamam. When Adi Sankara was writing bhasyam to Bhrama Sutra, Yoga Sutra, Bhagawad Githa and Ten Principal Upanishads; he was about to start writing Bhasyam for Lalitha Sahasranamam. Every time he used to pick up the original text of Lalitha Sahasranamam and sat at his peetha he found text of Vishnu Sahasranamam in his hand as if by magic.

Then Goddess Tirupurasundari appeared in front of Acharyaa and told him that there is already a bhasyam existing for Lalitha Sahasranamam so it will be beneficial for the mankind to write bhasyam for Vishnu Sahasranamam. That is the reason why there is no Sankara Bhasyam for Lalitha Shasranamam. This is curious given the fact that Adi Sankara was a Shakthi upasaka and his work on Soundaryaa Lahari and Ananda Lahari talks about Sree Yantra with authenticity and worshipped at all Shakthi peeta.

Yes, you are correct. The positive and beneficial effect it gives to the endocrine system is best part in this stotram. I am not trying to show off here.....I am reciting Vishnu Shasranamam from the age of 16. I once had a high fever and i was in New Delhi for the first time. I came for an job interview and was totally depressed. I recited this stotram with all my energy and by the time i finished it, my fever was gone and was drenching in cool sweat!!

@nickprasad1 -- I had the same problem in spite of studying Sanskrit as a language (because I did not use it for a while). if you are in Chennai, I would highly recommend that you visit the Indological Book Society near Vivekananda College. This wonderful establishment has most books with Transliterations in English and also translations which makes you both able to read and understand in english.

The Vishnusahasranamam is one of the 5 main parts of the Mahabharatam. The great war being over, King Yudhisthirah approaches Bhishma lying on his bed of arrows and asks the best path to Salvation for man. In reply that supreme bhakta of Sri Mahavishnu, Bhishma utters the 1000 Names of the Lord.

The 1000 Names of Vishnu paved the way for similar works honouring Sri Lalitadevi, Siva, Mahalaxmi, Sri Krsna, etc. but none has been able to transcend it.

The chandas is important. Chandas i sthe number of syllables to a quarter. This is Anushtup Chandas which is 8 syllables to a quarter. You find the beauty of the sanskrit poetry. Everything falls in place to a perfect beat. Chandas in this changes to 11 at some portions when the poet wants to convey some thing dramatic to draw your attention. Like in the versus "Shantakaram Bujaga sayanam."

It is so important to inculcate BHakti in them at an early age. .
