I completely agree! I was amazed to see a Dad and then a Mother in two different groups of people harnessed up with those metal frame backpacks and 20 pound infants in them. There were a couple of places just balancing my own weight was tricky much less what they were carrying. Since there is a limit on how many people can go up Wayna Picchu, I truly think there should be an age limit of at least 12 but I'm not making the rules:)
What amazed me was how many people were heading up this path with very young children! There's one point where the drop-off to the side of the path is about 1 kilometre down to the river. At many points, there is nothing to hold on to, and the steps can be damp/slippery, so you have to be careful with EVERY step.
