  • This is absolutely brilliant. Great job. Subscribed!

  • awesome , thanks

  • "when you get a new knife that's really dull..." aint that th' truth... too bad most knife makers don't know how to sharpen them

  • did you get attacked by a bear?

  • A leather belt ? Does this really work ? I dont see how leather could accually do somthing to a blade

  • @jsrl77 haha i can understand ur confusion. yes leather works. there are little files at the blade. the leather takes those little file or fin like pieces of metal and alignes them for a sharp knife

  • @jamesttripp so i could get rid of small chipps on a blade with a leather belt ?

  • @jsrl77 no. its like sharks teeth. they are not alligned all the time. but when they are bent back it fixes it. and you dont want to get rid of all the chips

  • in the outdoors stones of varying smoothness works in an emergency too

    good vid

  • Very good video. I use edge trailing on the smooth side of my carbon hone. I oil it good every so often and almost never wash it off. The more I use it, the smoother the grit gets.

  • Necessity truly is the mother of invention, thank you for showing us this :-)

  • or you could take my route an sharpen it on top of any car window

  • Awesome video. Very useful. Almost anyone can scrounge together most of these things with little hassle. I'm going practice this.

  • I use that same freaking belt for my strop.

  • Wow! I never thought of using a brick! o_O

  • BRILLIANT video! I have a pet hate for blunt knives and sharpen all my knives to an edge fit for shaving. You are one of the very few people who know how to actually sharpen a knife PROPERLY... I also believe that nobody has an excuse for a blunt knife, because its dead easy to sharpen one on anything infront of you. Also, as seen, it's not the cost of your sharpening materials, it's your technique! You can have expensive whetstones, but you'll have blunt knives if you have bad technique...

  • Very good video showing basic sharpening 101. It's a eye opener for those of us who spend lots of money on expensive whetstones to sharpen our blades.

Thank you for taking the time to do this video.

  • any Way this guy knows how to sharp! where ever you are & even without special tools The Man shuld find a way to have a blade-sharp knife

  • Do not try this on any quality knife. I want to cry now.

  • sounds painful.

  • wonder if his women keeps trying to throw those trousers away lol

  • Thanks for making the video. There are some good tips there and I do like a sharp knife when camping.

  • Leather without any stropping compound on it will not remove any metal at all, except for the burr.

  • I can tell ur a rebel cuz u have holes in your pants.

  • @nicholasgg1 family lol

  • @TheSikiciCocuk

    siktir, komshu and stop trollin'

  • "Dude, what's that thing in your backpack?"

    "That's my sharpening brick."

  • gonna buy a bunch of cheap knives from walmart and gonna try this, looks like fun...thanks for the info Bro...

  • Very, very impressive sir. Thank you

  • AWESOME SIR! THANKS A BUNCH AND BUSHCRAFT GREETINGS FROM LOS ANGELES

  • Thanks for the vid......nice to learn somthing new.

  • Your a retard that kills a knifes tempering

  • @ZChristopher22 No, it doesn't; you are absolutely clueless.

  • If only a sharping stone was that large and cheap

  • @01liquidfires amen brother! amen!

  • Nice!! I was thinking about buying a sharpening stone (don't really know how it's called in english) but after this video, well, nevermind.

  • Ty now my Bradley kimura is back to factory edge basically

  • Great vid and nice ideas to use common materials. My experience is that green compound works great for hand stropping, as you reported. For power stropping, with leather on a 1 x 42 belt sander, white compound works well. Thanks for the ideas.

  • Nice vid man! Good use of common materials that can be found anywhere... Be great in a time of survival....

  • No stroke the other way! dont go towards the front edge out! Otherwise it will catch the front edge and go dull again..

  • excellent video, good stuff man. Looks like you were whittling out the cross piece for a trap at one point.

  • I walk miles and miles without any shoes because I can.. gonna judge me too assholes?

  • Pretty impressed you made that knife shave using those techniques. And frankly I can sharpen the HELL out of a knife. Kudos!

  • O_O you have the same knife as me

  • jewelers rouge comes in grits just like sand paper. you can get it in a wax stick or as a liquid. The rule of thumb is darker maeans more abrasive. Black is mean to descale cast iron. Brown or Tripoli is a semi course compound. Green and white are for final surfacing before switching to a hand compound. A trick that aluminum polishers use is to get tuperware picnic ketchup dispensors and mix Rouge with Charcoal lighter fluid. It works better on a rag in your hand.

  • A large water stone (normally found at creeks) also makes for a good sharpener. Overall, I think I could find something better, like the inside of a potted plant container. The tough part about sharpening is knowing the angles at which to sharpen. If you find yourself in a once-populated area, finding a ceramic plant container is great. If you're on the go, breaking the container and sticking a piece of ceramic in your pocket also is a good idea. I like the belt idea.

  • U need some new pants my friend

  • Before i had a sharpening stone, i used a brick for my rough stone, and a housing tile for a smooth stone.

  • Very informative and useful. if you know anything about knives you know this young man has experience and knowledge probably passed on to him from an elder. his practiced ease of correct angles show his knowledge. I have seen men at work sharpen spydercos and other top quality knives with files and grinders.

  • No excuse for dull knife? No excuse for torn pants!

  • Thanks for the useful tips on sharpening with common items.

  • It works, I've done this.

  • So are you only supposed to use oil when you're finishing the edge? Or can you put some on the sharpening stone itself when you start?

  • If that was my knife I'd kick you in the arse!!

  • This is just too cool. I am a complete nubie, and this is so practical - thanks for the demo. Will be getting a cheap knife and now I'm eager to put a good edge to it before I give it as a gift. It is a rescue knife (glass breaker and seat belt cutter and blade). Thanks again.

  • Look at mister fancy with his bricks... Some of us don't have the luxury, and we have to use the sidewalk and newspaper.

  • Dudes probably on the back step of his fucking house, and you guys are judging him for not wearing shoes and wearing a beat of pair of jeans? Jesus christ. Obviously the guy knows what hes talking about. Hes not telling you to NOT USE sharpening stones, hes telling you that if you aren't around one or dont happen to have one on your person at the time (IE. Forgot it on a trip to the cabin or something) There are alternatives to sharpen a blade.

    Sweet fucking christ.

  • @FFJabarr Amen! why are there so many that can't think like you? no one has the ability to just enjoy a simple video, they judge the fuck out of the guy for silly unimportant reasons, the point wasn't a fashion statement, and really who cares, it was a simple instructional video, I thank him for showing us, probably most people wouldn't have thought of something like this, all they can think of is judging him for appearance, such a pitty.

  • @TheRattlehead69 Well, fuck. The video wasn't called "Check out what I like to wear in the privacy of my own home on my day off"

    Fucking idiots.

  • When the hell would you need to cut wood when you need to have a knife in your pocket???? You know you are going to cut wood take a machette keep in your car anything!

  • DONT CUT WOOD WITH A POCKET KNIFE IT RUINS THE BLADE! GET A FUCKING MACHETTE GOOD GOD!

  • @SuckMyTrace Where the FUCK do you get a MMACHETTE that fits in a shirt pocket!

  • @SuckMyTrace Lmao rambo, go troll somewhere else.

  • good info very well shot whats not to like thankyou kindly for taking the trouble to upload

    peace

  • @obamasuckscameldick first off public library are a place with free computer access and Internet and second off I usually when I have to get up and go don't put on my list check knives for sharpness third off I don't usually buy items except for luggage just for travel but anyways @luv2sharpen great informational vid

  • Baby,

I love the way you make it so simple to sharpen your knife. I am having the hardest time in getting my knife razor sharp- any additional suggestions? I will keep watching your video over and over (as I already have) until I get it right. Thanks so much for putting it out there!

  • LOL. I really regret posting my comment, I feel like the most hated man on earth. Please sharpen your knifes on anything you like... don't mind me and my collection of sharpening stones.

  • you have no excuse to be wearing those pants...

  • i bet the construction worker ya took that brick from was like

    "The fuck? Wheres my sharpner?"

  • You can also use the bottom of a ceramic coffee mug.

  • Thin edge = keen. That was hard to watch. I do not have any cheap knives i would consider doing that to.

  • i perfer a wet stone deer hide and shaving a fuzzy pear not my legs

  • good vid :)

  • Great video man ... This guy is teaching us a lesson...in the wild and you dont have a sharpener ...you can just use a stone ..life lessons here guys

  • Guy with broken pants, a cheap murder knife, sharpening on stone, has no shoes = Use of Glock needed

  • @TheSikiciCocuk I think you forgot faggot with painted nails.

  • @luv2sharpen ROFL! How dare yu go into your backyard and do possibly dirty activites without wearing a suit and tie! I BID YOU GOODDAY SIR!

Oh P.S. - The top of a car window will work in a pinch for the final sharpening too.

  • @TheSikiciCocuk dont hate now this guy knows his stuff who gives 2 shits how he looks.

  • @TheSikiciCocuk SO WHAT! You can sharpen your knife on stones out in the forest, and where do you think those fancy sharpening stones come from anyway! and who cares about his pants you Faggot!

  • @5tonyvvvv

STFU nobody was talking to you! OR do you want to be penetrated by my big german cock u dumb american

  • @TheSikiciCocuk No one agrees with you! Stupid Asshole!! You are the Dumb Fuck!

  • @5tonyvvvv

cmon go home and get a tissue......I spit on your mom you cocksucker

  • @TheSikiciCocuk HAHAH! You are a Pathetic Loser! With nothing better to do!

  • @5tonyvvvv

Dont write back you media controlled bastard

  • @TheSikiciCocuk If you cared about style you'd have bought a Sig ;)

  • Verry education sir, but then again sharpeners are cheap. Just buy a sharpener. Knowing options like this though will save a life someday out in the middle of nowhere. but then again thats another scenario that i dont want to put myself into.

  • Honestly one of the most simple and direct short and sweet videos on how to achieve a decent edge on a blade for the beginner and laymen. The best part or piece advice to complete this video was "Practice Practice!" There are no shortcuts in life.. Many believe that they can bypass "Practice Practice"

  • Great video! you can also use the bottom of a ceramic drinking mug to sharpen your knives. It's always good to have less expensive alternative methods to get things done.

  • I use to sharpen my knives on my grandmothers doors steps & sidewalk.

  • There are too many children posting comments here.

    Anyways...

Some people strop on cardboard, newspaper, etc. Some people remember grandparents sharpening knives on the bottom of coffee cups; you can touch up a knife on the edge of a car window. My mother remembers her grandmother sharpening kitchen knives on a step outside the back door. Good vid.

  • I found this informative and not like other videos on this subject. Thanks. The holes in your pants do not take anything away from the video.

  • THERE'S NO EXCUSE...

...WHY YOU SHOULDN'T OWN A GOOD PAIR OF JEANS WITHOUT HOLES IN THEM.

  • What's with the Huckleberry Finn pants?

  • I realy never get teached from somebody how and why exactly to sharpen nife.. I didnt never know that you can use almost any stone to sharp blades. I last time had my machete blind, take a few shawe on granite steps nearby..and it agains cuts. Knowleadge you never get with buying sharpening stone from shop( And knowleadge KnowHowTo is most valuable . You often need resharpened knife just now ..no time to go to 20miles to shop friday evening somewhere lost in jungle :) Nice video. thanks.

  • excellent video showing how technique is so very important.

  • 2:49 damn you have some super speed

  • Just wanted to say awesome! Anyone focusing on your pants, and material obviously have never really worked a day in their lives:) What angle do you sharpen at? Do you change it based on on if your hunting, carving, etc...? I'm still preparing to sharpen my first knife have always made my dad do it for me, but am getting more into wood working, and it is just sad that I am 29, and drive 15 mins to make him do it:) My smart ass comment take it off:)

  • oh ok ,, so ,,, i'm walking in the woods while camping ,, and want to sharpen my knife ,, now were do i find that cinder plant ,,, also what type of tree grows those bricks ? oh , i wear elastic suspenders , can i use them ,,, sorry but i don't want to make any excuses ,,

  • @heettreet go find a rock on the ground, smart ass

  • @zombiepancakes21 ya know,,, it was a bit of a smart ass ,,,, i should have taken it at face value and added that to my knowledge ,,,,thanks for the reply

  • Looks like you've been playing with that knife too much, your trousers looks appalling

  • Excellent vid. Those who think otherwise probably aren't the sharpest tool in the shed! But they could be! (no excuse!)

  • wait nvm...he DOES say you may want to trail the other way.

  • shouldnt he have the knife the OTHER way? when he sharpens it, he sharpens towards the cut...instead of out..

  • hey great vid you can also use a halfway rolled down car window to sharpen your knives thanks

  • Very interesting

  • Can you sharpen scissors like that, too?

  • Transients have youtube channels? Really? J/K

  • ya im gonna sharpen my $500 custom knife with a cinder block. great vid :D

  • damn ur fast?

  • Love yer pants, fella. Good tutorial btw.

  • Nice work showing the importance of technique and what can be achieved with very little materials through knowledge and practice. You have packed a lot of information on sharpening into one short video from grind geometry, sharpening, burr removal, and maintenance. One thing I would add is that if the concrete is very rough (rocks and such) you can flatten/even it out with the brick which will also add a slurry like a nagura on a waterstone.

  • Yes I was being sarcastic assassin and no need to apologize. I have sharpened knives on concrete myself even though I have a collection of sharpening stones. Course it was only a cheap knife.

  • how do you get a buck 110 from china? you disgrace the buck name !

  • @jesse324able1 I've got a 110 from pakistan. Its the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen. Looks just like luv2sharpens copy. You really can't disgrace the buck name with those sort of copies, they disgrace themselves. I'm sure luv2sharpen has some real bucks in his collection as do I. Speaking of which, there have been some really good 110 fakes coming out of china of late, they even have "BUCK 110" stamped on the blades, so watch out what you buy on fleabay if you're not 100% buck familiar.

  • @TheChevyguy572 Ok thanks. I wasn't sure whether it was a knock-off brand knife or the real thing.

  • @OZTLC40 When I was first teaching myself to sharpen, I was 13 and a couple of bucks was more than I had at the time. I'm sure there are at least a couple of people in the world without the means or motive to buy a stone, that would like sharp knives. I've also found myself in plenty of situations (such as when traveling) with a dull knife and no sharpening stone. Improvisation gets me through every time.

  • @luv2sharpen Hehe yeah I know, it was more of a joke really. I've been sharpening knifes and everything else since being a kid too and ruined a few in the process of learning. I still have a few of my old ones and when I look at them I ask myself "did I really do that to that knife?" These days I can put a razor edge on anything (by hand) and not put a single scratch on the blade, I'm quite anal about it. Glad you are using a chines knife on your video as no harm done :)

  • @luv2sharpen amen, Training Trumps gear!!!

  • @luv2sharpen But they can totally afford a computer and internet, which they need to watch this video. As for traveling, sharpen you knives beforehand or just take the sharpener with you. They make some incredibly small ones, as small as 3" by 2" (which cost about 2 bucks).

  • @OZTLC40 that is quite possibly the most dumbass comment I have ever heard. Unless you were being sarcastic, if so, i apologise.

  • @OZTLC40 You completely missed the entire point of this video.

  • @OZTLC40 For that price you're better off buying a brand new hunting knife

  • @OZTLC40

Somebody missed the point of the video...

  • @OZTLC40 Some people dont have that couple of bucks... Rich faggot.

  • Nice Vid Bro,Informative And To The Point.

  • i wouldn't do that to any of my knives!

  • uve got a hole in ur trousers.....did u do that with that newly sharpened knife ???

  • did you cut your pants too?

  • I'm on the ass. I shit briks.

  • Great informative video. Amazing what you can do in the field if you know how.

    Thanks

  • if you spit on the brick it will work better cause the spit works as a lube :-)

  • i was about to go and buy a wet stone for my not so expensive but not cheap knives and after seeing this fuck that shit

  • This video really shows the spirit of doing it yourself, most other videos are like,"you need this expensive brick with the word diamond in the name or some other stuff"

  • My knife is similar to that one, but I don't know the brand. What is it?

  • nice jeans...

  • Those pants are not the spirit of survival. They are calorie waste.

  • you need to buy some new pants, mister

  • have you been testing the knife on your pants?

  • 5/5

  • I can always get a "decent enough" edge but never anything near shaving sharp. Mabeye i need to be more patient, and really watch my edge angle.

  • good deal!

  • Yeah are you a homosexual??

  • Great video, I loved that you used everyday items as well. You never know when you'll need that kind of knowledge.

  • Good job of de-mystifying sharpening. Skill matters so much more than the knife or stones.

  • I can get a decent edge, enough to make feather sticks with no resistance, but i can never get it shaving sharp, at least not yet.

  • Many stars! Thank you very much.

  • were do you buy your pants they look expensive

  • I love the clip! Thank you for sharing this information. Best regards

  • i like you semi-pants. lol.

  • Great tutorial :-) The quality makes it one-of-a-kind in the youtube community.

    Best regards

  • Ive sharpened my knives on river stones before. Worked pretty decent.

  • Excelent video Simon!!

    thanks for posting this.

    Hector81 from bladeforums.

  • cool. well done.

  • u need t get better trousers

  • @TheOctoman34

    why?

  • @davidcarr3

you might get cold wearing them

  • Excellent video I'm going to try this.

  • Tripoli compound strikes me as a little soft for field honing. I like a more aggressive compound like valve grinding paste or emery compound (Dico E5) followed by chrome oxide or Dico SCR or CR1. Just a small difference. Cool video. :)

  • Awesome!! %5/5

  • Good tip. I did this this weekend to my BK2, before i saw your vid. Batoned a piece of seasoned hickory and my edge met an unseen rock. lil bit of edge damage...cement slab nearby to get the rough edge then a piece of cardboard as a strop..hair poppin!

  • Good vid man, thanks for sharing!

  • luv your vid!!!!

  • Excellent video S, no excuse indeed. I'm going to work on this. I've used the bottom of a coffee cup before...but I've never taken something from really dull to shaving sharp with stuff lying around.

Very thorough in explanation, well presented, and demonstrated very well. Thanks!

  • I think your pants are ripped and torn lol.

  • Cool video, you can also strop on cardboard or the glossy cover of a magazine because they contain very small particles of clay abrasives, cardboard is a little more abrasive than the glossy magazine though.

  • Great video. As usual. very neat strop.

    5/5

  • Great job Man!
