  • I think Judy would be proud of her daughter. Not only because her singing career took off, but also because she has the courage to sing her mother's songs! Because Liza I'm sure doesn't want to be known only as Judy Garland's daughter, but wanted her name to known for her, you know? A lot of people will compare her to her mother, which is why there is such risk in doing her mother's songs.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa wonderful... Judy and Liza togheter.... I love it!!!!!! I love Judy Garland Very much and I love Liza for that! emozionanteeeeeeee!!!!!!

  • This is the million dollar question why does Liza refuse to sing her mothers songs is it too personal for her does it make her sad , why does Liza only do tributes to her dad , her mother was Judy Garland for Pete's sakes she could do the man that got away , the trolley song and especially over the rainbow.

  • @cinderelmo because Judy is the legend... Minnelli no... was a great director, yes very much... but Judy is mrs show biz, the legend .. unforgettable. Liza is the singer like her mama, does not want to be known only because it is the daughter of Judy. But that is great... Judy on the screen and Liza singing! wow. I think that liza love very much her mama!

  • I hate to say, she has lost her voice. It's a shame!

  • Magnificent!

  • i havent really listen to liza but she is her momma

  • liza sucks here, but it's nice to see her covering one of her mother's songs, as she normally avoids doing that. when liza was young, she was a dynamite performer like her mother, but judy always had the more beautiful voice, imo.

  • Liza sounds similar to her mother! Liza ROCKED at dancing and singing to Beyoncè's Single Ladies song in Sex and the City 2! Check it out!! :D

  • this is a true delight

  • Judy must be very proud in the heaven for this! awww.. is cute that her daughter sings her song!

  • Im glad some of you got the joke, Liza was nice enough to come over to the edge of the stage and shake my hand after a concert. i guess pathetic 321 is just a pathetic drama queen

  • im going to spin class

  • Oh Liza...you are just lke Judy. How I love this!!

  • @rugout, you're joking yeh? lol

  • LMAO!

  • @PaulLeary LMAO too!!!!!

  • @rugout This is Judy Garlands legendary Daughter. Have some respect for thoughs above you, you jealous vile piece of sh*t trying to be a comidian but not being able to succeed in throwing out one liners as funny as Joan rivers' ones.

  • @rugout lmfao apparently liza minelli is judy garlands (who orginally sings this song) daughter....or son :P:P

  • @rugout Dude i SOOOOO hope you're kidding!!!

    That's Judy Garland's DAUGHTER!!!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • @rugout TOUCHE!!! That is HILARIOUS! And I was a true Liza diehard in her last Millinnial greatness.

  • Everyone says that she looks more like Judy, which when you look at her properly then she really does, but when you look at her next to her Dad then you can see a real resemblance between them! Liza is amazing!

  • she has sung this before, i saw her do it in the 80's at the golden gate theater in san francisco as a tribute to her father. its was great and a little spooky she looked just like her mother. you cant change your genes, some things are inherited from your parents. i think she got the best of both.

  • She's a parody of Judy Garland and Liza Minelli all rolled into one.

  • Comment removed

  • judy would be proud. liza loved her so much.

  • She is so amazing! Really cool to see Judy in the background.

  • Liza did it her way...Mama would have been so proud. She sounded great.

  • Very true. Miss Garland would be proud, of all her kids.

  • Comment removed

  • Liza Minelli, keeping the legacy alive.

  • yes she is and still amazing

  • she was definitely the daughter that had inherited judy's voice, but no one will be as great as judy

  • she truly is her mothers daughter.

i am not a big fan of Liza but i LOVE Judy!!!!

  • this was actually on tv. does anybody out there have the actual video recording?

  • Judy es una de las mas grandes pero Liza ha superado a su extraordinaria madre.

  • @barbraesmia Liza è brava ma nessuno supera Judy Garland!!!!!! Judy Garland is the legend for ever!

  • you know, i went to se her in march. It was tthe first time. She was amazing, and I don´t need to compare her witht anybody. She's got style, carisma, and at first, love for his job. this is respect for the audience. Now, I'm her fan, and i've been looking for old songs, and you know? she grow up!!!!!, so do you???? enjoy her style...

  • She'll always be second to Judes.

  • Yes, Liza DID promise not to sing her songs. But one day Fred Ebb said, "Liza May, look around you..." And she did. She saw an Oscar, several Tonys,an Emmy or two, a Grammy, and she realized she had earned these on her own and that by singing her Mom's songs she was not cashing in or relying on her Mom's coattails -- instead she was honoring her and paying homage. Gotta love Liza....saw her several years ago at the Beacon Theater in MYC and she was fantastic...

  • it must be tough to live in you mothers shadow,,,...and try to establish yout ow identity.

  • BRAVISSIMA LIZA!!!!!!! You make my heart beat faster!

  • Liza is a great singer and performer in her own right, but boy she sounds so much like her mother it's uncanny. I'm glad she came out to sing some of her mama's songs. She's the only one who can do justice to them. Great video!!

  • love it; fantastic, Lisa sang from her heart and soul on this number in memory of her mom.

  • Why so many negative comments!

Can't everyone appreciate this for what it is.. a loving tribute to her mother and father! I get chills when her mother starts singing behind her..

Judy would be shocked and angry at all of these negative comments!

  • Hmmmmm Liza swore she would NEVER sing her mothers songs. Guess she was desperate!

  • That's not true!

She said her dad once said to her.. "There will be one day when you break that promise (of not singing her mothers songs).. and you'll know when the time is right!"

This show was a tribute to her father's movies.. and since he directed Judy in two musicals.. it was justified for Liza to sing these songs of her mothers! She would never do it just to do it!

  • poor Liza...she sounds just like Mae West here.

  • the sound on the video is just bad. lisen to a better recording and u will see that she really can sing. its true that she's not her mother, but she can sing.

  • liza is the best there is i can't believe all the negative comments nobody can honestly believe this crap! what are you doing with your life do you have every award for entertaining like she does i just will never understand why some just have to criticize she is the best not her mother but LIZA

  • I love her! She has her mother's talent!

  • Minnelli is a drag queen imitation of the mother. Nothing more. A schtick. She had none of the mother's range, tone, clarity, timing, and especially the phrasing. Minnelli is a fine comedienne (shoulda stuck with that), but her ruse as an obvious caricature of her mother is ghoulish. That's what *initially* fascinated some people, it's why her career peaked in 1972...and why it's flatlined into nightclubs and middling Broadway acts ever since. Not even close to the mother's talent. Not E.V.E.R.

  • Your name Vengeance509 sums you up. If your in the mood tear down a performer I could think of about a hundred who deserve your venom a whole lot more than Liza Minelli. You could start with the current bumper crop who lip sync, not sing live, and who disappear after performing five years instead of being around performing for forty.

  • yeah, i agree, three or more thumbs down to you. i think liza is a better dancer than judy was but they are both stars in their own right. you're just being a hater...

  • That was terrible. She's killing the song. No one, not even her daughter, can ever sing like Judy. She was one of a kind.

  • she sounds like judy, but no one will ever compare to judy.

  • she sings just like her mother, same voice

  • bull..

    not even close.

  • ok, she doesn't have the charisma and personality, just sounds like her. judy put a lot of feeling and soul in her songs, liza just has the same voice

  • Because Judy's voice was playing in the background

  • I LOVE LIZA!!!

  • It's shame she's been out of it, her mother as well as her were and will always be so talented.

  • Like her mother, who was "prescribed" barbituates by MGM studio to keep her awake to film, and "sleeping pills" to calm her, which Judy then abused terribly and was killed by at age 46, her daughter, Liza, has always had serious trouble with drugs and alcohol.

  • Judy Garland died at the age of 47 ya ding dong!!

  • Yes, the massive abuses she has inflicted on her body do show....but then, she never was her mother in talent or sweetness.

  • how did she abuse herself?

  • drugs booze etc...

  • her voice is declining, people. she's getting older and older. people just don't stay the same. i agree with everyone who doesn't like her or her songs. she is just too old.

  • Lookat Julie Andrews her voice satyed the same and he coming bakc actually

  • wow people who write comments on this stuff are big fans ha ha, get your history out

  • When Judy appeared the audience went nuts. Judy's voice and chemistry over powered this sing against Liza's LIVE voice. When they did the Palladium in 1964 together Jduy was competitive with her daughter when Liza was on stage too long. Liza's own words not mine. She said it on PHIL DONOUGUE.

  • Liza is a great singer but her mother didn't mention that they giggled alot.Lorna and Liza, both embellish too much to make both marrieges between their fathers the better marriage. Vincente didnt help judy fight against MGM.The marriage dissolved shortly after. I dothink Sid was the love od her life. But Both daughters have milked their mother's legend. As they get older they see their own careers not grow as their mother's has since she has died. Even in death, Judy is the star of that family.

  • She milks her mother for all she's worth.

  • Liza= AMAZING!!

  • Why didn't they make her sing in Arrested Development?

  • Why do you have to compare Liza to Judy. Liza has proved over the years she is not only Judy Garlands daughter she is Liza Minnelli an Oscar winner, Golden Globe and Tony award winner to name but a few. Cabaret has to be the finest performance of Ms Minnelli. As for the show Minnelli on Minnelli this was a tribute to her wonderful Father and his films. Judy was Judy and Liza well she is a legend. I should know I have seen her live twice. Wow Wow Wow.

  • I find it amazing that Liza can still sing after all of her health issues and the fact that she chain smokes!

  • Technically, I think Garland was the better singer, and she was a child prodigy. Just check out the clip of her singing "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" at age 13. Her voice had instrument-like clarity. Even as it deepened through the years, it retained that quality.

Still, I like Liza a lot, and I think it's kind of petty to compare mother and daughter. I had the good fortune of seeing Liza at Radio City Music Hall in 1991 -- she was fabulous -- a truly great entertainer in her own right.

  • I love the way she used Judy in the background chorus, it's like her mother was singing with her. I wish Judy was alive

  • her voice may not be as good as Judy, but then not many are/were.

but Liza is one of the most talented artists of the 20th century.

    amazing. and what heart.

  • If there's a copyright in heaven and lineage to sing a legend's repertoire, though, you gotta admit that Liza holds the rights to it more than anybody, vocally and eerily, when it comes to performing her mom's hits live.

  • To do any show night after night, I don`t know. I saw Liza in this operformance during its run. She sing live all night. And, even if she`s not hitting the best of notes, I`ll take her live anyday! The theatre was too small for lypsynching. She wanted to pay tribute to her Father - PERFECTLY. It was a great show.

  • I could hear Judy's voice in Liza's voice. Liza's style is very different though. Kindly said, this song was Judy's: all her own.

  • She has a better voice than her mother did.

But Judy Garland had the full package.

  • she does not have a better voice than judy!

  • I think she refers to the fact that Liza can hit higher notes, which let's face it it's true. But she doesn't have that feeling of Judy's.

  • Maybe, but there is A LOT more to singing than high notes. Judy has a more unique expressive tone, better phrasing and better interpretation skills overall. Also her high notes had a bigger tone and more weight to them than Liza's. That's why, in my opinion Judy is the better singer

  • my point exactly ;)

  • Son dos gotas de agua... su madre se reencarnó en ella....

  • for those that think liza minnelli has lived off her mothers name etc- she is the only or one of the only women to receive nearly everykind of award you can win for performance- oscar tony etc... more than you or i will ever receive. her mother didnt win them for her!yeah she's dodgey in this vid- but give the gal her due in her time she was fierce. if musical recordings i had made were played as much as liza minnelli i would be very happy and also very rich!

  • I second that opinion !!!!

  • that she had surgery explains a lot about the way she sounds - but why is she still insisting on putting herself through this when her voice is no longer there? It's excruciating to watch

  • Fabulous!! Great!! Can't believe there's actually someone though - from USA too, who's never heard of Liza!! pleeeze, where ya been living.

And, Grai ... Liza is a fabulous singer, always has been - one star in the real sense of the word, a true star always stands the test of time too, unlike some of todays talentless fluff. x

  • come on now...I saw Liza live in the early 90's and she was a helluva singer...a wonderful interpreter of songs. It's hard to pin down qualities that make a great singer...I mean..what do you think of Dylan or Billie Holiday? Not technically "great singers" but great communicators in song...

  • I take your point Liza Minnelli certainly has the charisma to put on a show but its not enough to "communicate" there has to be SOME musical tone to the voice

She has star quality but Minnelli to my ears sounds like someone strangling a drunken old granny Just painful It takes away from her ability to perform with gusto - I just want her to shut up - even if it's only to carry on talking about "Mama" - which lets face it is all she has ever done - anything's better than the nasal screeching!

  • Apart from anything else she is SLAUGHTERING song that is WAY out of her reach vocally and if she had any sense she would steer clear of stuff that compared her to Garland who was a million times better vocally

But basically Liza Minnelli is constantly needing to DRAG her poor mother into the act 40 years after her death because she feels it's her one claim to fame now that her voice is even less than it was when she was young

  • You do realize that not long before this that Liza had vocal surgeries done on her, right? It completely destroyed her voice. In her younger days, Liza had a perfectly great voice. Have you ever heard her Carnegie Hall CD? Seen her New Orleans concert? She certainly had a powerful voice.

  • My God, you can be mean... Even vicious!

  • You are completely wrong. I just saw her live last night, and I have never seen a better performance. Her voice sounded great (not like it did when she was a teenager, but what do you expect?) and she certainly didn't need to "DRAG" her mother into the show. Everyone loved Liza for Liza. She was pure entertainment - funny, energentic, talented, and so nice. So please, stop being so harsh about this amazing woman!

  • Agian, incorrect. She does not belong in a hotel lobby, and hotel singers do not belong in her place. Sure, this video isn't her best. Seeing her live doesn't compare to YouTube, and I don't think this song is suited for her vocals. She and her mother are separate when it comes to her concerts. She didn't just stand up there and talk about her mom, & she didn't sing any of Judy's songs. Even people who did know much about her loved her performances.

  • No need to be so cynical. I can't stress how much that, just because she's Judy Garland's daughter does not mean that's why she's famous. When her mother was alive, she refused to gain fans through the "daughter route" and was determined to make it on her own. She certainly did. & she doesn't want to be known as Judy Garland's daughter; she's Liza Minnelli. If you don't like her and you have no appreciation for broadway legendry, then don't watch. No one wants to hear the negativity anyway.

  • You are so right, Pickletree; Liza didn't have to drag her mother into the show. But, I think it was an awesome tribute to her mother. No one harped on Hank, Jr. when he did a song with his late father or Natalie Cole when she did a song with her late father. These are very touching performances. I'm sure Liza would have rather her mother been there in person. I appreciate everything she does and Liza did make her own way. Judy and Vincent would be proud.

  • @bjcantrell2 Actually, Natalie Cole took critical flack when she brought the late Nat into her act, right there behind her on a big screen. Words like "ghoulish" were used when critics praised her voice, but scolded her for poor taste. I agree. Liza has had almost 50 years as a performer to establish and keep her own identity separate from her mother, and, as proven by this clip, has thrown in the towel. That's not to say she has no talent. She does. Or rather, she did.

  • she always CONSTANTLY referred to Judy Garland - even tho no-one asks her - somehow she'll crow bar her long dead mother into the interview or the show!

Then she gets offended if people call her Judy Garland's daughter

she's always wanted it both ways

It would be less annoying if the poor crazy lady could sing a note - even when she was young her voice was terrible

  • TOTALLY 100% agree with u. i dont like Liza.

she cant sing NEAR as good as her mom.

  • Liza Minnelli is better than her mother...

  • thats just YOUR opinion; which i really couldn't give less of a damn about. i think shes HORRIBLE.

    my opinion. not yours.

  • Of course, is my opinion

  • ONCE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats PERFECTLY FINE IF U LIKE HER, BUT I DONT. K?????

but im just telling u, her mother is 100,000 x's more famous than her FOR A REASON.

  • i think liza has a better and stronger voice than her mom.

but you can't compare the quality of her voice to the personality and star-quality Judy had. that is what makes Judy a far more greater star...

  • How does Liza have a better and stronger voice than Judy? I don't see it, or shall I say hear it. Are you familiar with all of Judy's work? Go see her perform The Man That Got Away and if you still think that is true something is wrong with you.

  • i am indeed familiar with judy's work and i personally prefer her voice to liza's. but i still do think liza's voice is stronger - or at least was much stronger when she was younger.

yet, as i wrote, judy has more presence and personality when singing, and that's what count...

  • and i deeply agree with you that judy's performance singing The Man That Got Away was deeply moving. One of my fave really... i can't understand how this movie was not a success at its time... ;)

  • Judy was the greatest; however, Liza holds her own as well. She is a great singer. Let's be thankful to her for carrying on the family business! Applaud her... She is giving tribute to her mom here. She did a fantastic job!

  • mother-daughter relationships can be tricky...

  • come on hear Liza singing Maybe This Time on Cabaret? That was some amazing singing there.

  • that is really uncanny how amazingly similar their voices are. wow. "and I'm dying to sing this song" sounds exactly like Judy.

    great video, thanks!

i love when they put up clips from the movie of Garland, how awesome..

  • It's almost like watching Judy. AMAZING! Judy still has a better voice though!

  • WAIT...shes JUdys daughter?

    im so confused

  • yup

  • Wait you're joking right?!? Her mother was a legend. Probably the reason Liza can even sing like such a star is because her mother trained her on the stage!

  • actually, she DIDNT train her. her mother didnt like anyone. i mean, she LIKED them, but she never truly loved anyone except for herself. but its resonable cuz she was treated like shit her entire(well, almost) life. she was a speed addict and she was so tired of trying to please everybody so she tried to commit suicide like 10000 times.i personally think that judy was 100000 times better than Liza. i dont think shes very good on the stage...she doesnt "do it for me"...

  • poor liza was so sick when she did those shows but she still did great..what a trooper

  • im sorry, but who is she and what was wrong with her?

i really have NO idea who she is

    shes WONDERFUL though

  • She's Liza Minnelli, the daughter of Judy Garland and Judy's then-husband Vincente Minnelli. She is a superstar in her own right, though, so don't just think of her as "Judy's daughter." Think of her as Liza.

And she was sick during a large part of this concert run that she did. As always, though, she was a trouper and she went on with the show even though she wasn't feeling her best (or sounding her best), and I applaud her for that.

  • It's true. Even though I can look at it analytically and say she's not at her best, I still find her mesmerizing and entertaining. Guess that's due the quality they call "heart."

  • Yes, for some reason Liza has chosen not to sing her Mother's songs much. I think she did a good job on the Trolley Song, though. I saw this show in person and she was great!

  • Probably didn't want to be only known as Judy's daughter. She did do good though

  • that's cool that she's singing her mom's song but love judy's voice a lot more

  • Kudos, Thank you so much for posting. You made my night.

    xx

  • Hmm, I've seen her do better.

  • Thank you so much!! It's Liza at her best: live and singing a classic song! I love it!

  • I agree...Liza's voice was is in the toilet.....judy...judy....judy....

  • hahahaha

  • it's so strange to hear this from liza ;D but it's good!

  • This show came about twenty years too late. It could've been magical. This show was magical, but Liza was at her worst vocally.

  • How Wonderful!
