tbf i did this method and it works absolutely fine ahahah just watch out you dont melt anything on the metal thing you use. Also make sure you do it quite close to the edge or the head will rip :(
@NeroStrike Ok, thanks men, a friend of mine has a tama rockstar, when I was looking for my first drum I was going to buy a tama rockstar, but bought a drumcraft serie 6
@tomjohnoman It lasted a long time! It does lessen the structural integrity of the head, but as long as you're careful with your equipment, you shouldn't have a problem.
this sounds all good except for ure theory in the beginning sound waves have nothing to do with air they are very small waves of energy so really the hole theory behind y u do this is wrong
Hey man, great tutorial! I have been scouring Google for days trying to find info on the porthole. (why burn? why off center? why 4.5 - 5 in.?) You nailed it!
Evans makes a resonant head that is actually a mesh screen. It gives the effect of no head at all while keeping your bass drum in round, pretty nifty really. This video is very helpful if you are looking to port your head.
Port holes are for miking. It keeps the bottom head on, so that sound is cleaner and not as "open" or overtoney. Your method for port making is good because it seals up the edges of the "cut".
when i play live i use resonant heads on my bass' with three port holes on them. It sounds good to me but is that ok for the resonance to? i play a lot of death metal.
@NeroStrike hey why not take it off all the way? is it bad for the set? or is it just not a desirable sound or? because i heard one that sounded awesome, from the song "birthday cake". ill love you long time if you help me out.. and also, how long would this mod live? is it gonna tear with no warning? or..? i have a cheap SP set and i took off the skins from my toms completely and there better now. but yeah, love you long time if you help..
@a7xR3v3r3nd I've got a 5 inch hole in the mid-left section of my 22. Sounds great. I wouldn't suggest doing a port in the centre period, but if you do, 26"+ bass drums would sound best with it. And when it comes to portholes, bigger isn't always better. Have fun.
@a7xR3v3r3nd Hey man yeah you just have an average sized bass drum thats the general size for all bass drums so do as he says on this video and you'll be fine :)
Really good explanation, never really thought of this lol, i always make bad holes with knives or such, and this is what im going to do with my next resonance head!
Also, the air hits the resonant head and rebounds back to the batter head. You can feel a recoil, and it affects you drum pedal batter. Thats why I put a hole in the resonant head.
@MrHoihoi14 one of the risks is not paying attention, letting the can get to hot and bascially catching on fire. another is if you're not careful, you could tear ur drum head which is why you wanna get the can hot to the point where it's JUST about to catch on fire but isn't too hot that you can't pick it up with a towel or something. I just melted a hole in mine a few hrs ago and can't wait to test the sound. But definitely be prepared for the stinch of burnt plastic in your house for a few hrs
i hate electic stoves my dad came in from work and set the groseries ontop of the cooker and melted through the pack and the milk cartin and went every where
@NeroStrike if like me you have a penis like an elephants leg... ;-)
(im just sayin' it makes those lonely nights tolerable.)
do you do much recording? if so could you recommend a good mic for kick drum recording. I've been using a Ribbon mic, its good but its way too bassy.... if you get me.
(i know that a ribbon mic is a poor choice, but its such an awesome mic and i have to justify spending so much on it)
@jakeludwig91 Its really a matter of prefference. I recently bought an Aguarian that has a 7 inch center hole and im very content with it. I play live shows with it so its also very convenient for micing
Another reason why the porthole is useful is putting muffling objects (eg. towels, pillows) faster by just simply insert into the hole instead of taking out the whole damn head off.
im surprised at the amount of haters this video has...i guess some people just do it for fun :S ....and i didnt noticed the reflection till you mentioned it haha....and great idea! i was thinking about putting a porthole in my bassdrum but im still not sure if i should or not incase it doesnt sound as nice to me :P but great vid! thank you very much :)
@tommydudefish He explains all the possible answers you could want to that in the video - if you mean for sound, watch it again and he tells you. Also it's cheaper than buying a reinforcement ring that sticks on and you cut, and safer for the head than cutting it without any reinforcement ring.
@MysteryMan691 He has a fucking induction stove so leaving the stove on does not use any power or produce any heat. It requires a metal conductor to be in contact with it.
Dude, I did this today, and I don't have one of those badass stoves. So I tried like putting the can onto a small pot and I almost set the house on fire xD It worked pretty good though :]
