I remember being in high school back in the mid 80s and listening to this and other people listening to madonna, motley crue, alabama and all that rubbish. i stuck out like a sore thumb but i loved every minute of it. i was in on a secret they werent. :)
The reason this album is so dark is that they were about to break up. This was gonna be The Cure's Last Album, however they gave it another go with The Top & had a hit on that one with Caterpillar Girl. After that they did Head on the Door & that album made them famous. It went off the Charts CHART TOPPER HITSVILLE.
legendary song,a unique masterpiece....and one of the best live songs from cure!!listen to many, many cure bootlegs in the last 25 years.... one hundred years was definitly one of the highlights and of course a favourite from the band itself.just love this song
Okay, now I know why people always say The Cure started the goth sound. I like their poppy/punkier stuff but fuck this. I'm just not cut out for this. At least I've not hit a low in my life so low that it warrants this kind of music.
I absolutely adore this song. One Hundred Years is brilliant. The lyrics are brilliant. And the music is... well, to be honest, this song is just too good for words.
This great tune is proto-darkwave. In fact it could be the first darkwave song. The guitars have that dark, expansive sound that you just didn't hear before the Pornography album. Kudo's to the Cure.
One hundred years ahead of its time. Really describes the existential dilemma the modern human deals with every passing year. Brilliant, haunting and relevant.
i bought album this on cassette tape after playing it a million times, the tape stretched which made this song in particular play a tiny bit faster until just after "Just like the old days" then it slowed to normal, made it that much more twisted. i miss that tape =(
fuck, i'm so ashamed i only found this in 2011...how come nobidy told me about this masterpiece??? but now i'm gonna listen to the whole album all day and all night!
Makes a lot of sense to me even now....and I was born in late 80's (no, I am not one of those people trying to be cool, just thought it was kind of relevant=)

I'm no expert on lyrics, but I think he's singing about the anguish of war. Just my opinion.

@FriendNotFoeBand Ha ha ha, wowww, I like your honesty. This is some of their best stuff, though. Try something off "Faith", next.
