Oh cmon - Ritche & Eddie are both legends, but Ritchie was there first. He doesn't need to pay any homage, homages are paid to your heroes & influences. While I'm sure Ritchie would respect Eds talent & influence, Eddie was unlikely to be an influence on him or his playing.
i hate typos...sorry half asleep typing here...EVH was pounding the keys so hard in the studio take he broke a key on the piano, you hear it on the album...i heard it live too...so they are using lifted tracks from the master recordings
the original studio track was done with a Wurlitzer electric piano running through EVH's classic 4 input 100 watt Marshall amplifier with a good dose of MXR Phase 90...if you listen close to the studio take you can hear break a key he's ounding them so hard...and I noticed it live in Charlotte too...they are using lifts from the master recordings
What you guys are referring to are sequencer tracks that add previously recorded fills and riffs. Don't complain, they allow for the simulation of that studio sound the fans want to hear. In VH's case it was Eddie who used to do the original loops himself and key them from his foot pedals. Many arena bands use this technology.
Saw them on first national tour with Black Sabbath. One of the best opening acts ever. But that was about 30 years ago.
The background sound is a keyboard. There is a very good possibility that all keyboards on this tour are being played live by someone off stage; not pre-recorded. I can't find the link, but I do recall seeing a picture from a rehearsal of a keyboard off stage.
i was at this show and the charlotte show. they absolutely KILLED at both shows. the only pre-recorded tracks were keyboard, no question about it. a couple of you really need to get a grip.
I'm an idiot? Because I know the difference between keyboard and guitar? Because I know when a voice coming from the stage is NOT the same voice I've heard thousands of times live and on record, because that voice isn't part of the band anymore? Because I understand the concept of performance royalties? You'll have to be more specific. Or just take 2 more tokes and leave the thinking to those of us with brain cells left.
>>Because I know the difference between >>keyboard and guitar?
No, you're an idiot because you DON'T know the difference between keys and guitar.
It is common knowlege that the part you are referring to was played on a Wurlitzer 200 model Electric Piano run through a flanger and into a Marshall.
Find someone else to bash - these guys are the real deal.
wgeek: I was the one saying that it's a keyboard, so I agree with you. Steve87219 is the one who said it's rhythm guitar. That's why I was saying I know the difference between a guitar and keyboard, and he (along with take2tokes) apparently doesn't.
its a wurlitzer organ run through a marshall stack with distortion on record, and it sounds like that on this clip. Wolfgang has a thicker voice than mike and he sings some parts a bit different. You are hearing van halen with sequenced keyboards and thats it, but thats only 1 persons opinion. Ozzy tours with so much prerecorded bullshit its pathetic, and he cant even sing on key. Sting sings like shit now and the Police play slow. t

I like how Van Halen have prerecorded rhythm guitar tracks on this...which of course supports the fact that if they are willing to do this then they have no problem with Wolfgang faking playing bass to a track as well as Michael Anthony's backing vocal tracks and Dave's prerecorded scream tracks in Panama. SHAMEFUL.
That's keyboard, not rhythm guitar. VH have had their keyboards on sequencer since at least '91, or possibly even '88. At least with the Roth-era there are only three keyboard songs instead of half the show with the Sammy stuff.
The backing vocals don't sound anything like Michael Anthony to me. Why would they use his vocals, anyway? They'd have to pay him performance royalties.
What? Eddie Blackmore? Wholesome lol!

That's cool but why you gotta bust out the Roth Army rhetoric here?
We're just pointing out how wrong this guy is is to accuse the mighty Van Halen of putting on less than an honest, real show.
Use your ears people - this is as close to a real big rock show as you're going to get.

Sorry dude.
I agree 100% - there is NO WAY they are using vocal back tracks.
I find it hilarious that so many "diehard" fans are so CLUELESS as to how so many of these songs were actually made.
Educate thyselves; Cradle Will Rock is keyboard driven - hence the potent attack of the notes.
Eddie's a crafty bastard - even now many are in the dark as to how he did things in the studio.
