The 2/3rd deployed to baghdad from May 2003 until the 7th of May 2004 not July.

In May 04 They joined the 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment to participate in Operation Iron Sabre in 'An Najaf', Iraq. The battalion fired over 159 HE rounds and 6 Copperhead to neutralize Muqtada Militia mortars in An Najaf.

That is where the 2/3 faced there toughest battle, not baghdad, strange he forgot that.

As for "standing up" to the government, etc, it wasn't hard at all because he didn't do any of those things. He RAN AWAY. He hid like a coward and used the publicity and popular opinion to protect himself.

He only returned AFTER his attorneys had brokered a deal for his release from service. His employer and family didn't give one flying fart about his desertion, they probably just wanted him back home and safe.

What I respected about the US Marine Corp was if just one of your fellow Marine's died, then you failed your mission!
