I remember having the honor of sparring him a few times at Mr. Saviano's White Tiger school in Lombard. I thought I was a tad special - I was in my physical prime - and Mr. Hackney would kindly pummle me softly with his gloves - and while I stood there drooling he would humbly tell me how to imrpove. He was a class act - like all the leadership I met at Mr. Saviano's. /salute to a true martial artist.

@Esteban0075 Hell YES!! This was back in the day when it was "pure" martial arts. No one was cross trained. They had their one martial art at their disposal. Karate Vs. Sumo, Tae Kwon Do Vs. Wrestling, Street Fighter Vs. Jiujitsu. No weight classes. No one crying their opponent needs to drop 2 pounds, or no fight. You could weight 150lbs. Your opponent 400lbs. But no one complained. No rules. 2 or 3 kicks to the face was standard.

@billysue2 yes he did compared to the competition pat smith, art jimmerson, van clief, etc gave him. i think Hackney deserves alot more credit than those guys. He also landed many shots and Gracie never really took him down Hackney threw a wild punch which landed and thats what put him in Gracie's guard and eventually led to the arm bar. Gracie had to go to his own back to get Hackney to the ground

@ezzydric keith hardly fought at all after that match,vn clief was over 50 yrs old,jimmerson had no intention of fighting mma nd pat smith fought several times over the next decade or so but was too brainless to learn grappling.Royce didnt care how it got to the ground,only that it did,there would be many people royce could never take down without pulling guard,he wasnt great.

@billysue2 well lets put it this way i dont think Hackney is an extremely good fighter i just think he's a decent fighter and i think that he gave Gracie a better fight than most fighters did. Gracie could not just take him down and submit him like nothing he had to approach him differently after his takedowns were countered. Bottom line is that i think Hackney gave him a much better fight than most.
