  • interesting video. I dumpster checked last night behind the grocery, major dept. store and the walgreens. All I found was a cardtable and 3 free pumpkins.

  • The cameraman is such a perv. What's up with the butt shot of the butter girl!

  • @chalupa9999 actually no its not ur property once its in the trash. supreme court said so in the 80's otherwise cops couldn't take evidence from it. Once its in a can outside on streets its fair game. That's y u shred documents, if a dumpsters on private prop. That's different but its called trespassing not stealing.

  • Yes, I am sure this Mexican is sending all his money back home and ironically has a higher net worth than your average American as he can save most of his earnings.

  • Is this in America if so i love your Accent

  • hail to Boards of Canada!

  • Are the ones frequenting the so called dumpsters going to log on and watch this video??? Perhaps they will pull out their Iphone????

  • seriously thats the best butter in the world!

  • Wow...the comments for this video shows just how ridiculous people in America are. Everyday people throw perfectly useful stuff away. It's not always about being poor and not being able to afford grocery store food. It's about not being wasteful. Food from the grocery store is probably sorted by department, so you won't find stuff from the bakery in a bag with raw meat from the meat department.

  • i work at a grocery store at we throw out hundreds of dollars of perfectly good food everyday.

  • Have you guys ever thought that there was a REASON why that stuff was being thrown away?! If it is past its expiration date, then it is expired and not safe to eat.

Just dive for electronics and magazines instead. I've found plenty of Car & Drivers, as well as an Altec-Lansing ACS48 subwoofer system yesterday.

  • @HarvestmanMan When I worked at a grocery any food from the bakery was a thrown out after it was just a day old. They throw out stuff at the end of the day.

If fruits and vegetables don't look "pretty" anymore they're thrown out too. You can check expiration dates to be sure. And if you go very late or very early stuff is still fresh. America is wasteful. Stores don't throw out stuff that is completely ruined, otherwise no one would be dumpster diving for anything.

  • They throw things away for safety. For example, if a baked good is more than a day old, how do we know there's not some sort of fungus growing inside it? That's why there are trash compactors behind most big-box stores--so that no one gets sick or hurt. It's sort of like trash-picking clothes, and not knowing if somebody who had the flu was wearing them.

  • @HarvestmanMan You don't just eat it without checking it out. I eat day old stuff I bought in the store all the time. No one should wear second-hand clothes without washing them. I've bought vintage clothes from eBay. I always wash them before I wear them. I don't believe that's true all the time. I've been in a Wal-Mart Super Center and in a Kroger's in my home town. Anyone else seen the day-old baked goods on the rack by the bakery. Sometimes places don't throw them away??

  • It's true, you can find all kinds of useful stuff in the garbage. It's amazing what people throw away.

  • Hey freeganchef, I was wondering, how do you know there wasn't a good reason for throwing out that butter? You have no way of knowing what happened to it- aren't you worried about that?

  • lol dirty pigs...get a job

  • @xwgs351 CUNT.

  • butter made my dad fat

  • God bless you jet, fuck these hippies.

  • @scarab088

Yeah fuck every last one of them. Sue me hippies!

  • ha, i love dumpter diving, made a killing at school in FL. And make over 250$ a week here in MD which works out to lke 22$ an hour... tax free... Alwaysss grab empty ink cartridges and books! they are easy sells online to "buyback" companies

  • hey i live in minnesota... can you please give some ideas of which dumpsters to check out? like what stores? thanks!!!

  • Radio Shack, K-mart, BookStores (especially used), INDUSTRIAL PARKS

You reallly need to just try and hit EVERY shopping center and company in a 25 mile radius because you never know what you will find! do that a few times and you will learn the good ones, and you can focus on them! I'll try and get a video of me diving and some stuff i've found. Best of luck!

  • Anything but restaurants.

  • @nipsta3 ok im not poor my family actually has money and i dumpster dive around large department stores like olympia sports and i found 3 skateboards and 2 skateboard ramps and a grind rale but now i think the snap all there boards before throwing them in dumpsters but you can still sell the trucks, berrings and wheels

  • Dumpster diving isn't illegal so you really don't have to worry.

  • depends on the country, here in the UK it qualifies as theft but its not enforced

  • The only thing to worry about is having the store know what you are doing.

  • i want to dumpster dive but don't want to go it alone (my first time at least), cant find anyone in my area :(

  • Where do u live :D?

  • liverpool, uk, yourself?

  • Ah np I live in Denmark. :d

  • lol i'll go with you live in upstate SC? :P

  • the denmark in SC is more downstate than upstate isn't it?

  • yeah its kinda in the middle

  • my parents don't support my freegan lifestyle. i live with them and they make me eat the dinner they made and not pick out of the garbage. my familys pretty good on not wasting food anyway

  • I've been dumpster diving everything since 2005 the most amazing thing was a gold watch from near 1830 worth a few thousand that I gave to the Quaker Peace house at Ashland Oregon

I've listed a bunch of freecycle(dot)org things as well a Giant gear as well as two ipods Th e ipods never made it to freecyclers though

Being a detrivore makes being a moral vegetarian kind of different as I can eat anything I find at a dumpster if I believe it was placed there as authentic trash

  • freegans dont go through PEOPLES garbage, they go through the garbage of SUPERMARKETS that throw away full sealed and perfectly edible food.

  • @djbazia ---Better that someone eats it- rather than going to the landfill. ;-)

  • Fuck you i will rummage through yours and anyone else garbage regardless of your approval.

  • I'm a righteous dumpster diver dude. Yeah I'm a righteous dumpster diver dude. I get all of my apparel, From the bottom of a barrel. All my favorite music, Someone else refused it. My letterhead has many styles, Because it comes from the circular file. If it's in a bottle or a can, Then I figure that I can, Eat it all up, Without throwing up! I go to Campus every spring, To look for all of the good things, That people throw away, Because they go away.
  • nice video. nice choice of music.. it's boards of canada, right? love them.

  • well the u.s. wastes a lot of food a year so y be wasteful?

  • Right. It's clips like these that are giving us dumpster divers a bad name. To the people who made this video, please look elsewhere. I am growing very tired of seeing the same kind of typical shit on Youtube. If you want a true leason in dumpster diving then watch my video "Travisty's Trashure Hunt". Good for a shock value.

  • Oh and capitalism is a good thing.

  • no mate its not coz the food in the bins is not past its sell by date and when would you go into a shop and walk out with 8 nets of oranges?, thats what i got today. Oh ye and with the recession it could become a more known thing, theres nothing wrong about it nothing at all.

  • Boards of Canada

  • It has nothing to do with parasites. Maybe if people didn't waste so much natural resources this wouldn't happen. Food would be much cheaper.

  • I've seen another vid of these people, and they're mostly targeting stores and are boycotting standard capitalism. The throwaway attitude of today's corporation isn't necessarily by their own fault. The law has a lot to do with that; that's why they rotate the dates as insurance on losses. I've seen cases were sometimes store would mark outdated foods down, but that's only during a close-out sale.

  • Getting food from the bin is good for the environment,do you want your kids to think you are uncaring and wasteful?

You are not worried about pollution and lack of exercise when you drive your car?

And what might your kids think about your car addictive effects on the community?

Your kids need a father who is more caring for the community instead of a father with an uneducated egotistical fear.

  • Harmless and beneficial all round. In England some supermarkets pour bleach in the bins so people cant take the food, just in case they get food poisoned and sue the stores

  • In Australia,a new chain of German supermarkets have opened up in about 2007,and one of their stores is the only supermarket ,in my experience,to pour cleaning liquids (strongly smelling of chlorine/bleach)over the foods in their bins.

I take some of those foods and rinse them and then eat the contents after removing the skins/wrapping.

So will the bleach be causing more food poisoning/law suits?

It is an awful smell on my fingers too.

  • This can't be done in Mexico, even though here is 100% legal, garbage is not separated and is picked up once a week in a truck that goes through the neighborhood, you run behind he bus give your garbage bags to the kids that go inside the truck, give them some coins (otherwise they won't take your bags) and you never know where they take your garbage.

I found where they take it, first, is tooooooo far, second, everything is so mixed up that you would never find anything clean and useful.

  • In German law dust belongs to its owner. So people who take things from dust are treated as thieves.

  • Not in America. There are no legal protections to your trash once you place it on the street as cited by the US Supreme Court.

  • What was the US Supreme Court case concerning street placed trash? Who was sued and by whom?

I'm pro freeganism and just curious. Thank you.

  • @FreeganChef do you know any articles or documents i could read on that particular issue?

  • @FritzleHamster that sucks... europe say sometimes to be so free and stuff,,, but they really are not that much, but good medicine... well in China and India is cheaper and better, in my country at list trash is free,,,

  • I would like to see their carbon footprint :)

  • Does any one know the laws on this? bc i go around ppls house and get stuff but never in like the stores trash like this.

  • I'm sure it's more illegal to go to peoples' houses because that would have more personal stuff in it, probably.

  • you're allowed to go through trash, household or retail, as long as you dont' have to tresspass to do it-once it's in a curb or a dumpster that isn't on private property/locked up (never cut a lock!) it's public.

  • i am a flight attendent and i hate seeing all the food in first class get tossed or just unused, im going to see if i can pass it out or offer what we dont use in front. it you have any ideas let me know.

  • Find or call a local Food Not Bombs group. They collect food that people are willing to offer and give it out to the poor or people unwilling to buy in to corporate America.

  • So they'll give you food just because you don't want to buy it?

  • Why don't they just give it to the homeless?

  • I used to work in a restaurant, I had the same idea. The problem is, if there is only one case of food poisoning, the restaurant is going to be in serious problems...

  • well there are a lot of extreme activists who refuse to spend money for capitalism...they are usually homeless because of that reason

  • No, their world is their home. [:

  • ah yes...thank you for correcting me :)

  • why do people throw away perfectly good food?

  • I'm a righteous dumpster diver dude. I get all of my apparel, From the bottom of a barrel. • ...yeah, because fast food is SO much healthier than organic veggies vacuum sealed in plastic. I used to work in fast food when I was a dumb, young kid. What I saw... Pretty sure you barfed for other reasons dude.

  • This is very entertaining. Thanks to all of you.

  • cans and sealed okay but butter??? really? okay, i... guess..........

  • Apparently there are a few processes by which you can 'reclaim rancid butter'. Worth the hassle? Probably not. Useful knowledge in a post-apocalyptic scenario I guess though :p

  • The consumer apocalypse?

  • canned foods also are quite plentiful but i hate getting stuck with 100 cans of corn or worse beets

  • watch out for bed bugs in the dumpsters~!

  • Isn't it illegal to do this, also? Tampering with garbage that the state owns once it's in the dumpster? Otherwise, I'm all for it, have fun and whatever floats your boat, but I'm just worried you guys (and other freegans) are gonna get arrested!!

  • it's ok in America (unless there is a local law against it, but countrywide it's ok) as long as you don't go on private property to go through the trash (then it's tresspassing)

  • We like to have one person shuttling food to the car for that reason, but also so that if anyone comes it doesn't automatically look like there's not a huge mess on the ground (ie. keep it clean even while working).

Headlamps can also be very useful.

  • THX for all these great tips. I'll have to make an improved version

  • I like to put the food in my bag right away. That way if anyone comes out I'll leave with at least smoething. Nice Video by the way.

  • damn, i forgot about that one. that and using baking soda to wash produce.

  • Another tip: Wear Gloves :)
