I saw them at the Ivanhoe theater on the north side of Chicago in 75' and saw DI Meola at the uptown theater in Chicago in 79' doing his stuff! I play guitar and was blown away! Al has defiantly been a huge influence on my playing style.love the Spanish/classical/rock/fusion influences that he combines to create his own unique style and sound.thanks Al!
The troubles with the moog just illustrate that whatever happens, the show must go on! I could see occasional twinkles in the eyes of the other musicians that indicated they knew Chick was struggling, but they just carried on, knowing that he would carry his own part professionally somehow. That's live music for you. Anything can happen. I'm sure there were heavy discussions with the techies after the show!
The continuation of soul via instrument. Honest music made by legitimate musicians. This magic has all but changed it's season, only to be rejuvenated by the blessed and introspective. If only this were popular, without being taboo. Then maybe we would be without such blasphemies as Lady Gaga.
I am I the only one that noticed that Chick's minimoog is fuc*& up? Everytime he tried to play it it was screwy. Contacts dirty. He defaulted to the clav and the Odyssey. Where's the keyboard tech?
@chizmo7 in those days it was pertnear impossible to keep those synths in tune because of how they were wired. if you cruise the comments of other videos (i know it's mostly trolls) you'll read more qualified people than i explaining it.
Tuning isn't the issue. The gold plated key contacts need cleaning. When he goes to play a note, the note freaks out. I've had a Minimoog since 1979 and I know the problem well.
This session needs to be put to DVD and marketed. I have the 2008 Montreux show but find this to be played more in tune to the album, which i prefer. Come on whoever ownes the rights to Old Grey Whistle Test release this to this generation so it will not be lost and forgotten in time. This is skill at it's finest.

Chicks MOOG synthesizer was acting up, but the Lenny, Al & Stanley played right through it and never missed a beat. I have always loved this track. Peace
This was one of my favorite bands in high school, I'm only 21 and nobody was listening to this kinda stuff. This band paralles the Mahavishnu Orchestra, although I think the Mahavishnu used more complicated time signatures. I think this band is more in tune w/ the idea of universal love than the Mahavishnu was though.
A lot of older-school players (60's & 70's) did real-time dynamics (volume) and EQ (tone) manipulation via thir knobs/pots. One "preset-patch" wasn't enough tonal-variation to span a long fusion-song for a guy like Al DiMeola! Remember, there were NO "patches" in 1976! You had ONE sound, and maybe a couple of variations with effects/foot-pedals...Once the 80's rolled around, (and guys could "program" several "patches,") there was a serious decrease in "knob-fiddling!" - LOL!
Jazz will never be the same. These pieces were timeless, creative and fun. It brings back so many good memories. Chick Corea, Return to Forever, Stanley Clarke, DiMeola, Jean Luc Ponty...these are the greats. No disrespect to jazzmen of the past or present...they redefined Jazz to what we have today. Thanks to all of you!

Everyone let us brag just how profound this guy is on guitar and then forget about his songs when we wake up in the morning. Such a talented guitarist, such a typical, pathetic song writer. Who care who fast and precise this guy or any guy like him can strum and pick the guitar? The truth is that his songs suck and that is the bottom line. Sure he is ultimately talented...........but jazz and this type of extra-terrestrial guitar work doesn't sell because one never remembers the song or sound!
@godak -In my opinon, Stanley Clarke's solo records from the mid to late 70's. Most of the guys from RTF show up on all the records, but there are also brilliant spots with guys like John MacLaughlin, George Duke and many more. Check out the 'School Days' record. MacLaughlin and Clarke make magic.
@PlymouthVT For real, everything Stanley was doing solo through '78 or so was magic. It got a little weird in the 80's, but thankfully he's been back making great music for some time now.
Something happens to Chick's Keyboards at 2:15. . . he quiclky moves into the other one bellow. . . maybe because of 70's technology. . . amazing performance
Check out 1:01... It's Al Di Meola doing his thing! He starts his solo... and then builds into an unbelievable alternate-picking frenzy!!! I've been trying to play like Al for 25 years and still can't do it!!!
@phrygian3rd Actually he's double-picking (playing each note twice), and he's going nowhere with it as usual. Oh, and I could play that when I was a baby.
Lovin Corea's reference to Latin jazz with a quasi montuno (4:30) and those 8va's that he uses. This sound is still very popular (the way he voices his chords and etc on piano.)
Drummer Lenny White's great composition. Looks like the Minimoog was having problems or the panel settings were inappropriate - Corea had to play the synth lines on the Clavinet.
Please, tell me where can I download full version of this video with this quality sound? Because I have downloaded in Emule but with bad sound quality. Thank you much. Excuse my English, hehe, regards, Tony.
In 1980 I was a 13 year old drummer. I hung out and jammed with my musician friends and we discovered Jazz Fusion along with this record. Today my friend plays guitar with Lenny White. Amazing.
Stanley Clarke plays a higher range bass called piccolo.. he does a lot of solos so he is not a traditional bass player.. his sound is more guitar oriented.
@Tubbymcgee MICHAEL TSARION IS A VERY COMPREHENSIVE CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE AND LEO ZAGAMI AND JRDAN MAXWELL ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL. P.S. ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE WROTE OVER 400 HISTORICAL NOVELS EXPOSING WORLD TYRANNY(ROMAN CATHOLIC EMPIRE). HE WAS AN HISTORIAN ACTING AS A NOVELIST.
@rockjohnson80 absolutly.. do not mis-understand me.. i think Mr. Clarke is one of the greatest musicians we have ever known. I own many many recordings of his. very inspirational.
this reminds me of my lp when i first heard this type of music kids at school poked fun because the new wave had hit but being a drummer i liked this i was into this and the dixie dregs
This is my favorite one b/c they REALLY get into that funk feeling. They tend to be on the more rockish side of things, but that's what so great about fusion. Love the tight funk feeling here.
@inappropriatereactor I completely agree, but the only thing I don't like about his style is that he holds the pick awkwardly. His hand is in like a claw... But, that doesn't mean that he's not good. He's fantastic!
Lenny White is still ahead of our time !

He is funky though...keeps the groove like Verdine.

Love the tight funk feeling here.

in this age of guitarists, Di Meola still is a timeless master.

@inappropriatereactor I completely agree, but the only thing I don't like about his style is that he holds the pick awkwardly. His hand is in like a claw... But, that doesn't mean that he's not good. He's fantastic!

@inappropriatereactor And he still rocks that goofy-ass hair cut like a champ.
