I just lost my dobie to wobblers disease, I had his ears cropped, now we got a puppy, we left his ears uncropped.. I love them both ways, they are just awesome dogs. You have a beautiful puppy.. I dont rememeber Stonewall ever being in any kind of pain when his ears were cropped.
cropping the tail and ears as others mentioned help to protect them when they have to defend their Master. The ears cropped also enable for better focused hearing to detect threats. Dobies were bred to be the best and most loyal guard dog that needs no training to protect it was bred into them and they literally will die protecting their master. With other dogs that is just hyperbole but with dobies it is reality
I never got my girls, doberman 12mon old, ears cropped. She has to constantly have me clean her ears with a special solution I use. She always get build up dirt and other debris stuck in here ears. So I wish I would have cropped them just for her long term comfort.
People always want to talk about the pain of cropping, but I think the pain of cropping is far less than a life of ear infections etc..... do the math you non dog owner peta freaks.
@CeldhanMiranda Well, that's exactly why it's standard to crop the doberman's ears (among other reasons)- because their ears are huge. They were bred to be guard/attack dogs and with floppy ears, the criminals would grab their ears and tear them off (or try to). That's one of the main reasons why they crop the ears, though cropping also helps with ventilation and somewhat prevents ear infections.
Kochan u r a fucking idiot. U LOOK IT UP! most of us are experienced breeders. There ARE benefits to cropping and docking u fuckin tree hugger. I bet u voted for Obama u fucktard. Here is an idea...don't ever get a dobie because u obviously have no clue about the breed!
@drummerofthebored I had his ears cropped and the tail was docked on the third day after birth. It wasnt easy with all the retaping and stuff but I didnt do it bc of ear infection. I did it bc dobermans w floppy ears look like a hound. If i weanted that I would buy a german shorthaired pointer or a black and tan
Whooooa... So much hostility! X_X Calm down, people. Zen. Breathe.
I want to get a doberman, and I'm well aware of tail breakage and ear infection problems through not cropping and docking, as well as other health problems and the need for training. As far as I'm concerned, I'm fine with cleaning out my dog's ears if I choose to get one. Plus, cropping and docking are now illegal in Australia except for medical reasons. So I really have no choice. Not that I mind. I wouldn't do it anyway.
@drummerofthebored LOL "Most of us are experienced breeders." That is SO not true. Half of the breeders out there are normal people that don't respect or know ANY of the codes of ethics to breed their dog, resulting in dogs who have poor or less than desired temperament and health. Stop throwing around illogical fallacies and strawman strategies to try and prove a point because it's not working. What does Obama and tree huggers have to do with dobes? YOU'RE the one that doesn't know the breed.
@ILoveConsoles he was like 15 lbs lbs at 12weeks and a HANDFUL, be very weary bc I have owned a CHow and german shepherd and this Doberman was BY FAR the toughest puppy i have ever raised...they require A TON of attention. Thats all he wants is to be moving and learning.
I had to lean my head and look at him with a stern look in the eyes and that made him bark...so i started saying speak right before he went to do it and treated him everytime with soft treats so he could eat them and move on to what was next in my hand haha he picked up on it in literally a few days of getting him @ 8 weeks
Ya know, not all ear croppings are just for looks.
With long ears like that, it's easier for a Doberman to get an ear infection. I personally support ear cropping, but only for that reason. Tail cropping on the other hand, I've yet to see a benefit.
@iOinkyDoink I agree Dobermans have long ear canals so when water gets in there they can get ear infections. As for cropping the tail they have very long and fragile happy tails that end up braking when they hit it against something like a wall or table. That is what i have been told by some breeders.
@YekAdameRadif. Typical idiotic responce. I wish your dog the best life. Cropping ears can only cause infection and has no basis of health improvement. YOU LOOK IT UP. It is soley cosmetic and inflicts unnecessary pain on the animal
@YekAdameRadif Actually i found out that is not true. Ask people with a non cropped and non docked doberman how many ear infections and broken tails they have to deal with in their lifetime? just like the others.
@fabrix7777 I actually have a buddy who thought like you did and had to later have the dobermans tail removed halfway down the length bc it broke in half...and let me tell you this dog was in WAY more pain than mine was at three days when they just wrapped a band around it and it fell off...kind of like your umbilical cord was snipped at birth man...good thing the doctors decided it was beneficial for you huh?? Grow the fuck up and find take ur bullshit elsewhere
why do you shout at him... you treat your puppy very hectically. and I wouldn't encourage barking as they are a very vocal breed already...
