  • I wish I'd have had you as a Guitar Teacher way back in 1980! This is an awesome song and I too was hard pressed to figure out the guitar. That muted strum is as important as the proper chords! Thanks for your clear, concise, instruction!

  • thanks for taking your time to check this out....your kind post is greatly appreciated - all the best with your music!!

    dale

  • I have NO musical ability and knowledge, but it is fascinating to see you deconstruct this beautiful tune to show what makes it tick. Thanks!

  • how do you get the mutes from the second to third chord?

  • i'm using palm mutes and lifting my fingers a bit from the stings - all the best with your music!

    dale

  • great sounding guitar, what kind is it.also what strings.thanks good job

  • guitar is a Collings C-10 deluxe with the deep body option. Woods are mah/adi and it is short scale. Honestly i would be guessing on the strings but for sure either Martin phosphor bronze or 80/20s. Thanks for watching,

    dale

  • Thank you soooooo much. I had part of the song figured out but you showed me all the cool chords I couldnt figure out. This is one of my favorite all time songs and TGN was one of the first 8 track albums I ever bought. What a great site you have.

  • Thanks so much for taking your time to watch - all the best with your music!!

    dale

  • I have been trying to figure this out for a long time. I just could not get it. Thanks so much. I believe that after learning your method of playing this song I may have come up with a small improvement you may want to try. The chorus starting with When all the breathing air is gone.... try this chord progression instead:

    G, D7, BM, D7....

    Before the sun....

    G, BM, C, D7

Out where the rivers like to run...

    repeat

    Once again thanks sooooooo much!!!

  • great to hear from another fan of this tune! thanks for your suggestions - all the best with your music!

    dale

  • @davefeinstein this is the way i play it.i think my music is the same to.check the net for the chords.

  • This is such a great great song and a long time favorite. When the song came out by TDN, I was hooked after the first listen. The words are by Paul Williams (Rainbow Connection, An Old Fashioned Love Song)) and the music is by Roger Nichols.
