I can kinda see what you are trying to do but just a few points. Female bonobos,have a very visable swelling when in full oestrus. Gorilla females do not have such visable swellings,so not sure how that fits with your gender hypothesis. Gorilla females also have quite a bit of choice in wether they stay with a silverback,it's not as controlling as it would first appear,they can quite easily transfer to another silverback. Male gorillas usually have to attract females, not coerce them.

I think that this is pretty much the content of sex ed class that I remember from high school

certainly won't criticize your point. to clarify mine though, it is not apparent at the time. i can barely keep track of the days of the week myself, i doubt i would be tracking that two weeks out. then again if i bled regularly i might have a better sense of the months. other creatures (like baboons) have apparent and concurrent visual or scent indicators. the more important point too is that OTHER people who encounter a woman ovulating are unlikely to know her state in the cycle.

To the question of common names: I believe that "chimpanzee" and "chimp" is now the convention for referring to the whole genus, Pan, to which both the Common Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and the Bonobo (Pan paniscus) belong.

I agree with you sad, but in the case of bonobos, as you already know, they DO engage in sex with all sexes. but, that doesn't mean that female alliances and friendly cooperation with other females is lesbian. bonobos are clearly pansexual in their behavior.
