@franksb4u If epsom salt has any kind of non salt related chemicals in it I would not use it. Lots of guys use whiskey. It adds a bit of whiskey flavor which they enjoy.
@franksb4u You don't want residue of funky chemicals in your pipe. I don't think it would be healthy. This is why I tell folks not to use isopropyal alcohol to clean.
Just soak the salt until it is just the consistency of mud. You don't want the salt to be floating in the alcohol. If I got to much in there I just dab it with a kleenex to get the excess off. But the alcohol evaporates off anyway, so if you get it a bit to damp it's ok.
Kel, I am sorry to hear that you are having some problems with this pipe. I have done the salt/alcohol treatment on many old estate pipes and they show more deep brown residue from the tobacco. The stain is alcohol soluble so it will clean up. You should not need to do this on a new pipe. Any conversations with Becker?
It's ok, I got most of the gunk out and I actually enjoyed doing it and video taping if for you guys. I did try to call the Becker dealer who I bought it from, but the guy who knew about them wasn't available. I may try again, but I love the pipe so much in spite of whatever was in there I'm okay about it.
It really is easy to do, just also make absoultely sure that no alcohol gets on the outside of the pipe finish. It will take the finish off quicker than a rat on a donut. (I found this out the hard way)
Ok. I'm not sure as to how much alcohol to use but will do some research. I hope to see in part 4 how you will remove all of the salt that will be in the shank.
Put alcohol in a drop at a time until it is just saturated. You don't want it to wet. Sorry I didn't get a chance to film taking it out. But it was simple, I just poored it out. Before you do a salt/alcohol treatmen, make sure you get any goop or stuff out of your pipe. I clean it down to the wood before I do these treatments.
I should also mention you need to use Kosher salt. It is much chunkier than regular salt. And you need to use a dropper or syringe to put the alcohol in little by little. Also, do not do what I did to plug the stem hole. Go to a lowes and buy some small corks (rubber prefered) to gently plug the stem. Hope this helps.
beautiful bulldog pipe, would you mind if i asked how much you paid for it?

@BTayache I think it was just over a hundred on ebay. Or maybe right at one hundred.

@SmokeRingsPipeDreams Yeah, I figure isopropyl would evaporate too quickly anyway.

How many times do you have to do this treatment? Till the salt stays white or 3 times? What do you recommend?
pipetech26 10 months ago
@pipetech26 It all depends on the pipe and what I'm trying to clean out. But if it stays white, that would be enough I would think.
