I work at FLL, today I heard the unmistakable sound of a GO-480 on its takeoff roll but was too far from the runway to see the aircraft, looked it up on flightaware and it was an old Queenair A65. Such a rarity, wish I had known he was taking off so I could get a closeup view. But man, what a sound!!!
Both the T-bone and bathtub nacelled early Commanders had individual exhaust pipes fed into augmenter exhaust stacks giving them that sweet musical roar.
Ask Don, thats his Aero Commander 560E, basically an older shrike, IMO ear shattering is an understatement, not from inside the cockpit, but from persons anywhere near the outside during take-offs or flybys. Don if u got your ears on where did your son take this video from?
@ACA1225 i want to say its peachstate or something like that. its west of 6A2. this is after the 1st annuel he had done to the plane.
and dad got 4 sets of noise canneling headsets soon after he got the plane... its not quiet in the cabin. But I recall on a few diffrent times getting told by 6A2 that the have gotten a call about the noise when we were doing touch and go's.
This doctor had an old Beech Twin Bonanza. It was a lowered gear prop ratio. What ratio was, I don't know. Also one of those rare highwing Helio Super Couriers had the same set up. Both planes had 295 hp Lyc. I believe, and with an ear shattering exhaust sound on both. This Commander sounds just like them. Nice and a different sound. Can I have more specifics? Thanks
I thought all of the older non-turbine highwing twin Commanders were considered Shrikes. Funny coincidence, I was reading a comment reply about a highwing twin Commander, and the other guy too, stated they weren't all Shrikes. I did not know this. We learn something new everyday. Thanks
Its definitely not an older version of the shrike. The shrike has many modifications that make it a completely different airplane. The 500B is an older version of the shrike, you could even call the 500B a superior aircraft due to its superior useful load.

@AIRPLANEMAN1965
the engines you speak of are Lycoming GO-480A1B6 or variants of this very cool sounding plane.

This thing sounds like a Golden Eagle, or an old twin Bonanza with the low geared props. Is it? That's a weird sound for a Shrike.
AIRPLANEMAN1965 4 years ago
its not a shrike, its a 560.
