This is one of your best videos. I would like to mirror it on my channel, and publish a link so that my subscribers can find you. I will only make some small edits for time, but other than that, you did very well.
Great vid indeed. And I want to add one more thing. If you succeed in learning a language. It is very likely you have a greater chance in succeeding in other field. You probably have already know how to learn a thing. no matter what it is. Because learning itself is very alike, no matter what the subject is.
that statistic about 10% is pretty embarrassing, and I bet you it's less than 10% and of those 10% I bet most of them lose their abilities in that language and won't learn any other languages in life.
about saying that it helps with your own language, YES..when one stumbles across a word in a foreign language, one can also figure out how to say something in his or her own language to be able to speak more polished
dont you like speaking to someone in a different language, who cant speak yours?
Great speech. I found this video because of a Facebook post. I have always loved learning languages and in college learning languages has been a lot of fun. We get to practice a lot in the language we're learning. I'm learning Japanese and I can already read all the characters created by the Japanese. I think it's very beneficial to learn another language and wish more people were motivated to do so.
Great speech!! Benefits of knowing a foreign language - this gives me to think about something more. Knowing a couple of foreign languages, I want to know how it will affect (or influence) your personality. I feel my character changes when I speak in a foreign language though I know English and a little French^_^.
Could I get paid more just because I speak 'Japanese' in Wal-Mart, America??
i agree, but at the end of the day you can't force people to learn a, or many, languages. it's really all about interest and will. but, like you said, bringing up the benefits can help motivate people to take one on. good speech and video.
A made a lot of friends I would never have known if I haven't learnt english, japanese, italian and spanish !!! I met so many friends who speak spanish !!!
What about the european statistics? Here everyone should know 3 languages after high school: french, dutch and english but most people are just fluent in french although some of us speak fluently the three languages!
Opening doors is so cool !!! I opened the japanese one and it's very rewarding !!! When I was in Cezh Republic I couldn't communicate and it had a hard time there but in Taipei it was very cool because I could communicate with locals !
@loki2504 Same here. Everyone can speak dialect and standard German over here, most of the people English and only one in the class is fluent in Spanish (because he want to move to South America for one year as a social worker).
@AndreR241 All depends on your motivation ! If have motivation you'll learn spanish very fast because it's an easy language ! But if you choose to learn japanese or chinese you should better be patient because those languages require a lot of exposure and study (300h) to be able to produce some output xD
@loki2504 The main problem is our teacher... I mean, she really tries, but it doesn't work at all. Friday evening is a very bad time to learn a language in School and the method sucks anyway.
I mean, I'm not bad in Spanish class, but I'm bad in Spanisch, because exercises like "Conjugate the following 100 words" are not very worth it or usefull.
What a great addition to your speech. Here in Germany it's obligatory to speak at least two foreign languages to get to university. You don't have to be fluent, but it's necessary that you attended two different language classes for at least five (first) and three (second) years.
@AndreR241 We have to attend language classes, but they teach you mostly vocabulary and grammar. Most people do not become fluent from these classes and fail to effectively communicate.
@Codylangaugesblog We already talked about that issue. Maybe it could have even a negative effect, because learning a language in school is annoying most of the time so you might loose your interest in learning foreign languages after finishing school.
I think, the only way around is to change the style of the lessons, focusing more on speaking the language instead of learning vocabulary and grammar for tests.
great video. i totally agree.

I like your attitude
most americans are like
fuck you you all have to learn english and if you have a acsent just go back home
here in germany I am in 10th class and I started english in 5th latin in 6th and italian in 8th class
also in 10th I could have chosen spanish
and in 11th I can choose chinese
but I get your point I am not good in latin or italian but my english is good I guess ;D

@RationalCreationist I wish more people were also just as motivated to learn languages.

Yeah, I'm motivated in the same way! Languages are able to open your eyes to a different world! Thank you and keep making videos! ^^

@voyageparis Probably, my friend got paid like a dollar or two more because he knew Spanish, and he could help Spanish speaking customers.

@19fas88 The thing is...WE NEED TO MOTIVATE THEM, tell them just how drastically important it is!! We need to perk their interest.
