@bob22222222222222100 Brecker has just a different and personal way of playing this song, and that's what he did in 1985. As Joe Lovano mentionned in his tutorial video, dont let the song play you, play the song. I think both Dexter and Michael versions are very interesting.
@jazzharp1 Oh, no, not another one! Hello! Me too! And I, now, am the..wait for it..."Northernmost Known Bossanova/Samba/Capoeira Band"...Joke" I thought they said Recife, but it was Racine...Ha ha..made the same mistake in the'60's, thought it was Oakland, but it turned out Auckland...had a lot happening then, must have had a bit of a nap...anyway, I know of only two people still alive who either know or can play this or any bossanova, which is why I'm trolling for players...
@Drummykins Longtall is one of the greats, Spend some time listening to modern jazz, and hopefully you will get it. It takes some folk alot longer than others because when your ready to hear it you'l hear it.
There are some great musos in the world today you need to go find them. Good luck.
Think on devote some time listenning to this art form and then you will understand about self expression, individuality sound technique and NATURAL development .
@sopwithcamels266 Culdn't have said it better myself! I grew up with jazz, bebop, big bands, other kinds, it's such a part of me all my life I tend to forget what you said is true. Maybe Youtube etc. will help folks turn on to it. I've had lots of conversations on here and quite a few have got my point, thanked me later! Onward! :) !
how Dexter, layer by layer and shade by shade moves up and playes around with lots of tension and release....till he gets to the top of the hill....that's what a good improvision should be.....Dexter Gordon..the one and only...
His ability to deviate from the main melody lines you see in band scores and add his personal touch makes him one of the best saxophones the world has ever had.
Love it!!

i listened to brecker play this. I think he completely missed the point. Dexter on the other hand? a solid "hell yeah" will suffice.

To get the Dexter sound try Otto Link or Dukoff mouthpieces - he used both at times.
zootMKVI 1 month ago
@zootMKVI I think Dukoff is much too bright for a Dexter sound, maybe a Dukoff Hollywood would come closer...
