The reason he misses a finger is because the main character misses one as well.

In the game, the ring finger gets removed when assassins join the guild/cult/sect, so that the finger can make place for a knife hidden in the sleeve. When entering combat, the knife can easily be slidden out of your sleeve and be set on the place where your ring finger used to be.
