This song to me describes surrender. I don't know so I'm giving it up to whatever I surrender my beliefs and open my mind and let whatever is (being what know one actually knows.) fill in the void without fear
the new album is really good but i like their old stuff a lot more, like when they used to do metal i cant remember the name of that album but it was awesome, and catch without arms was sweet too.
thanks for the suggestion, iI already own El Cielo, CWA and TPTPTD. it's a shame Leitmotif can't be found in any store! Honestly, I wouldn't be able to choose which one is my favourite, I love all of them for different reasons. 18 people, Yatahaze and Quotes are probably my fav songs anyway.
Funny how theists interpret things to fit their own worldview.... there is no guarantee of a god of longevity.... I don't know if I'll go somewhere special when I die so I'll just go on living my way... obviously agnostic and obviously saying I'll do as I wish in life, no matter the consequences. No one knows what will happen when we die.. but like the song indicates I would rather live my life well than be a slave to ignorance and apathy. one thing I am certain of is there is no GOD.
@xdustytheduckx Yeah, and I suspect your close-mindedness toward open interpretation will give you your own set of problems.
I can't speak for everybody else, but I'm not "guessing" about what Dredg meant with the song. I'm just adding what I gleaned from the lyrics, and what they mean to me. Half of the fun of life is individual interpretation. I get that there's a specific source, and I agree that any Pariah fan ought to read it, but reading the song for ourselves is just as important.
If you ask me, I Don't Know is about the importance of doubt. Not knowing and accepting that we are part of something that we probably don't understand is more humble and more fulfilling than devotion and close-minded insistence that any one religion is right while everyone else is wrong. We could all be wrong. To learn and accept that opens our minds to grow and understand the world in a way that devout religious thought (including atheism) inevitably stunts.
@spunkylovechild i just created a youtube account just so i could write you! its unfortunate that most of the world would disagree with you. Though I agree more than you know. most religions teach that doubt is blasphemy. doubt is just accepting that there is so much more than us in this world. and that there's no way of knowing the truth. i do believe there is a god, but i refuse to follow religion. religion makes ppl close minded.
The album is heavily influence by Rushdie's letter to the 6 billionth person (an essay warning about the dangers of religion) SO much so that the Dredg album cover for this CD is an imitation letter addressed to the 7th billionth person.
In sum, this IS an agnostic anthem, and this CD has several blatant statements AGAINST religion. So yeah, it's not about being a superficial read into the songs, it's their intent!
@mirrorsformiles i have to apologize i was way harsh dude. True this is a departure from their more artistic videos but im sure at some point everyone knew that dredg would do the whole "band perspective" thing. In the end the videos don't matter that much...compared to their newest album, which, imho, blows El Cielo out of the water, and thats really saying something. I really dig the funk-influenced vibes on songs like "Gathering Pebbles" and "Mourning this Morning." It's simply an epic album.
you're right.. compared to Of the Room or Same Ole road this video is soooooo intense. lol i love these guys.. a whole lot. i'm not trying to shit on them at all. I'm just saying their past 2 videos have been dull.. them playing their instruments and nothing more. I'm a big fan of how creative and out-there they've been in the past.. that's all. I'm really hoping "Quotes" or "Pariah" becomes a single and maybe they'll make some crazy weird music video out of one of them.
Wow.. so boring. When it comes to music videos.. Dredg has really stopped giving a shit. They used to have really interesting and creative videos.. now its them saying "look at us playing our instruments! look at us! look at us!" lame.
@petraramon but they based the album on an essay called "Imagine There is no Heaven".....I think its pretty safe to say that the song relatively agnostic. I mean isn't the whole "I don't know if there is a God out there" the basic structure of agnosticism?
I really like this song for that reason. I get more of a feeling from this than i do from my friend's christian rock.
BUT to each his own. I respect your opinion my man. just thought I'd put mine out there for some food for thought.
@petraramon hey, give it up!. don't go trying to twist such straight words. the song is about agnosticism, in fact go search "agnosticism" in a dictionary and you will find that the lyrics on this song are like a carbon copy of the definition.
If you want to believe in religion, then good for you, I respect you, but you religious guys gotta stop trying to make everybody think like you do.
@petraramon What you said did not indicate the song was not agnostic. The lyrics clearly state that he "does not know", and asserts you should admit you do not, either. Dredg are stating an acceptance of uncertainty.
great song. the lyrics aren't well thought through.. well maybe they are, but not logial: they use agnostic arguments to deliver an atheist message. but on the other hand, it doesn't necessarily have to deliver the message literally illustrated by the words only. but definitely nothing you could use for atheist propaganda.
Dredg is a band of thought. For an average person this song will come off to be agnostic or atheist but i feel that the song has more soul to it and really they are speaking about most lost people who have NOTHING to believe in. the ignorant masses that just go along with society and trendy culture, we all must have some purpose and Dredg's is to make meaningful music for people to decipher on. This is only what i think so hopefully this clears the thought on their supposed atheistic twist.
@howardmoon44 They're coming to Soundwave this year-maybe you can catch them there?
