How could you not like season 5? It was such a great season. It was not sub-par, it really was just as good as all the others. There was something so distrubing and beautiful about it.
@cartens33 It was a good season, just like all the others, but it was the only season that required a fair amount of suspension of disbelief--mostly revolving around McNulty's "homeless killer." It felt a touch artificial at times, which was something that never happened in any of the other 4 seasons. It wasn't "bad" by any sense of the word, and it's still a better season than you'll find from any other show (except possibly The Sopranos). And it was impossible to top Season 4, IMO.
@jesusmcsanders I know why people think you had to suspend disbelief, but at that point of McNulty's life, I can see him losing perspective and doing something like that. He's arrogant enough, and smart and stupid enough to try something like this. Believe me, cops have done this in the past, and will do it in the future. It seemed very plausible to me. I guess if it feels artificial, I guess that's more subjective. But I loved it. I don't know. Just my opinionionionionionion.
i don't understand why people consider this season as one of the worst season of the show. i loved it , the newspaper thing is directly related to the main story , and the season was full of surprises. and i love seeing mccnulty going crazy
Season 5 got a little too personal for David Simon, who was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun for many years before getting laid off. The newspaper storyline was full of extreme cynicism and the characters one dimensional. The newsroom was never written as fully developed like the police, streets, docks, schools, city hall... etc
also the season only had 10 episodes, they had to cram in alot of story arcs and the season suffered as a result. Still, worst season but pretty good season.
@yangdax I agree with your assessment, but I still say that even bad Wire is still amazing TV and miles ahead of most television today.
I think a lot of the upset over it also had to do with *spoiler* McNulty falling off the wagon again. He was such a good character and seeing him straighten up in season 4 was nice, but I know I was disappointed to see him fuck himself up again in season 5.

The mutherfucking Bunk! Also, every single character in The Wire is cool as fuck! It's the greatest show ever, but I do believe everyone knows that already!

The last quote also is a subtle reflection of the motto of media today. "The bigger the lie" reflects the almost ridiculousness of the stories presented by the media of all various sorts. "...The more they believe" shows how we are willing and vulnerable in consuming such bullshit information because the information being presented by "credible sources."
CSI is not this deep, yet the writing and the acting is very very shallow.
This same technic can be seen in homicide. Munch and another detective do the same xerox machine BS with some perp they arrested, but they tell him something about gama rays and sperm count shortage. look it up on u tube.
i also saw this on the short lived abc drama, The Unusuals.
The scene is in both shows because it's based on a real life method used by Baltimore city homicide detectives in the 90s, as David Simon reported in his non-fiction work "Homicide: Life on the Killing Streets" which the TV show Homicide was based on. And then Simon made The Wire of course. Anyway, believe it or not, what happened in this scene is REAL, suspects actually fell for this trick all the time. People are stupid.
When you walk through the garden you gotta watch your back well I beg your pardon walk the straight and narrow track if you walk with Jesus he's gonna save your soul you gotta keep the devil way down in the hole he's got the fire and the fury at his command well you don't have to worry if you hold on to Jesus hand we'll all be safe from Satan
if im not mistaken, the guy with macdonalds was in Namonds class in season 4
