I've been spinning socks for a month now... I am being asked to perform fire in a month... two months of practice isn't gonna help me much, so I am quite thankful for the safety tips!!!
thanks for the safety tips.have been wanting to learn for a long time. im excited to try. i spin 2handed w/kem_lights now on long lines. for years. readyy to take that next step so all tips are helpfull
first those poi are completely unsafe if the balls tangle they will end up just coming off and flying into a crowd and use a smaller can with a lid so you can close fill the can up and soak the poi 1 at a time put them into zip lock bags and swing them off then pour the fuel back into the can and why would you even light them with a candle ?
Ball chain is one of the standard issue choices available from many fire poi manufacturers. There are other choices available such as oval link chain, "dog chain" style chains, various chain maille weaves, aircraft cables, etc etc. and each come with their own pros and cons. The chains used for the poi in this video are visibly large enough to be rated for use with poi heads of that size. Ball chain can not kink, and the rods that attach the balls are stronger than may appear.
For being so new to spinning fire (and not actually knowing a sinlge other person that did it!) Ase is pretty damn safe in this video. And why would you hate on using a fixed lighting source? Lighters are a pretty classless way to start a real show compared to candles.
Ok for fuel DO NOT use a thin high combustion fuel (AKA: gasoline, white fuel, lighter fliud etc...). Always use a thick low combustion fuel (aka Kerosene, #2 diesel, red kerosene, lamp oil) basically use oil fuels. The fire poi's are basically wicks, it would be logical to use a fuel that requires wicking to burn. You are asking for trouble if you use a high volital fuel in these. Of course NEVER over saturate with fuel.
@mythril4 I know alot of people who use colemans white fuel and they have no problems at all... as for me i use a mix of 1/2 kero 1/4 klearstrip paint thinner 1/4 tiki torch oil, i've never had any problems with it and i've even soaked for 2days straight on accident and i got the same burn time out of it.
ok safety tips and other stuff but were is the learning part...i am a fire eater and breather and i want to introduce the fire poi in my routine...where should i start ?thx
@weislerning always use "white gas" colman camp fuel.... never kerosene or lamp oil, these are impure and leave residue that will disqualify your equipment from being used indoors at high paying gigs...
At 4:10, was that the wet towel? or a dry one?

weislerning 4 years ago
i use coleman white gas, although it transfers to clothing easier then kerrosene, but almost no smell

Do you find that it is harder or softer on your wicks then kero? or have you only used white gas?
Bellithe 2 years ago
Use kerosine or paraffin.
