The British take a back seat to no other race when it comes to expressing national love...as evidenced by Jerusalem. This really should be their national anthem....perhaps someday it will be. In a word: majestic.
well said from the lady at the front, stand up! this should be the national athem not god save the queen this is abouts Englands pride not the commonwealths
One would immediately think Blakde would feel betrayed and co-opted - but maybe not? There have been many reforms protecting workers and new social welfare politices since Blake's time that he likely would find his homeland a much more civil and charitible place. So even though 21 C. Britian falls short of his vision, the fact is his hymn continues hold up the portrait of an ideal, just society (the new Jeruslaem) that Britians should strive for. So maybe he might just approve!
It is ironic that Blake's hymn (which draws on the ancient holy grail myth of Christ's earthly visitation to England as the basis for a protest against the 19th C. exploitation of the masses by the forces of inductrialsim - the "dark satanic mills") somehow became intertwined into the fabric of British imperialism and patriotism. Would Blake roll over in his grave at this co-opting of a protest song?
@AndrewMann552 communists unite and all, but please, this is the the de facto anthem of my beloved homeland. don't spam communist messages on this video please...
@kashga11 You forget William Blake was a fellow comrade! A supporter of the French Revolution! The words of this poem are full of revolutionary symbolism.
Unfortunately our anthem in the US isn't even worth a communist spam message, compared to Jerusalem our anthem sounds like it was written by some illiterate pirate.
