@brettwad360 I don't know, I think it would work fine dubbed. The people most likely to buy it would be those who are already fans of the series, or general anime fans, so I dont think the cultural jokes would be an issue. Besides, if we understand it with subs, why not with a dub?

not everyone who watches anime is that big into japan, the "serious" anime fans dont make up the entire anime market, people like flcl but that doesnt mean they love japan

the "cultural" anime market is very slim due to the fact that it doesnt translate well over here, therefor we have the fan-subs that cater to that audience,

i love SZS, but its what people in the industry would call a "localization nightmare"

Dude there are some shows that just can't be dubbed... It just can't be to do so would be butchery, would you want to see Sensei with a diffrent seiyu? Hell no, some shows just sound terrible dubbed. Like Excel Saga.

SZS would be diffucult to dub, with all the japanese cultural, political, and pop culture references in SZS, it would be hard to explain it all to american audiences. but that does  not mean that the anime will not make it to american shores. they're realsing the manga, so there's a chance that if the anime does make it to america, then it will most likely be a subbed release.

i've seen some pretty decent fandubs (they do it properly-with the same process the pros do it but i can post links on comments so)...you'll find...that it just doesn't have that japanese tang to it...i mean the catchphrase is "zetsubou shita" but for it to count as a dub..it MUST translate that to "i'm in despair"...but the thing is..you can shout it like itoshiki does with zetsuboushita...bit "I'm in despair" shouted in that way seems inappropriate...its simply too japanese

Most English dubs are well done =/.

incorrect only 30% of jap-eng dub transactions get it dead on or pretty much correct (series may have western influence in it, east-west collaboration project,etc)..roughly 40% get close but ruin it for minor reasons (mis cast of a few actors, bad interpretation of translations, sound bite of the original cannot be translated to english speaking voices (Kanon)), ...the rest...major reasons (like name changing, plot changing, replcing original ost, blatant ironing out of cultural references, etc.

I'd like to know one anime whose dub completely changes the plot of the original show, besides Ghost Stories.

The original version was as boring as heck in the first place. ADV did the show a favor.

And as far as I know the only shows who have had the names of their characters entirely changed are Sailor Moon, YGO, and Tokyo Mew Mew.

Most example of bad dubs people use are from 4kids, while there are a dozen other great dubbing companies out there.
