Guys! i had a lingual frenectomy done around 2 weeks ago. And It doesn't hurt anymore. I can't help but notice that it seems my tongue is still pretty tight and when I stick it out, it's rather the same as before I got the surgery or even shorter. I know this surgery is suppose to make your tongue longer and more flexible, but it's doing the opposite. I'm also trying to get more info about frenectomies online but no help. :/
What is the recovery time? Is this a normal result after surgery?
I am planning on getting my tongue slip with an argon laser, i have a normal length tongue, but if i also pay to get a frenectomy, do you think it will noticeably lengthen it any? thanks!
@revoltkid123 I'm not sure what you mean by having your tongue "slip". Maybe you can explain more, but another thing that catches my attention is that it will be done with an Argon laser. This type of laser is no longer made, but many are still in service. While an excellent laser to stop bleeding, I'm not too keen on using it as a surgical laser.
@revoltkid123 OK, that's what I thought. I assume you are into body modification. I cannot emphasize strongly enough that this procedure only be performed by a surgeon; the chances of severe bleeding and/or nerve damage are high. That being said, I can't tell if a frenectomy will add extra length, there is a limit as to how far the frenum can be reduced. Only direct examination can answer your question, so I'd take it up with your surgeon.
@pittielove it's really not painful with minimal anesthetic! The laser make the process minimally invasive, less tissue is cut than with a traditional scalpel. Clean and precise.
I want to get this done! tell me anyone, did it hurt after they did it? did you feel anything at all when they were "freezing" your tongue with that tube?
@turbokayaker I practice in the States, Virginia to be specific. I don't know what the fees are in Vancouver, but Dr. Glen van As, who practices in Vancouver, is one of the very best at this procedure, I'd encourage you to look him up.
I'm getting this dine because the tongue is attached to some tissue which is starting to lull my bottom teeth out of alignment :D I can't wait for the surgery :)
@JJordan1012 In some people, there is an excessively long connection of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. This limits the movement of the tongue and can affect speech and eating. Infants born with extreme cases are unable to latch on to the mother's breast for breastfeeding. This procedure removes the excess attachment, allowing maximum freedom of tongue movement, and can even be performed on newborns very safely.
@mudkipzz321 Thanks for posting. If it's not asking too much, I'd appreciate it if you could elaborate on the how the procedure has changed your speech.
I dont know if I should have this procedure done or not. My frenulum extends from the tip of my tongue to the top ridge of my gums. If I do have it done, will it have a negative impact on my speech. I am worried that people will make fun of me at school if I cant speak properly.
@Bhavzie In my experience I've only seen improvements in speech, especially when pronouncing "ch" and "th" sounds. Remember, this is an elective procedure; it is not necessary for your improved health. If you don't have any speech problems or any of the other difficulties associated with extreme frenum attachment (inability to move or clear food from your cheeks, eating difficulties), then you don't have to have this procedure. Consult with a dentist, physician, and speech pathologist first.
I'm getting this done next week and, even though I'm 16, I'm pretty freaked out. Does it hurt? Oh and on the day of my surgery, I've got a basketball game. Can I still play?
my tongue cant stick out too far n i was thinkin of gettin this done or maybe gettin someone to do it for me... heard some piercin spots do it... but im afraid what if they must me up... but i dont wanna pay hundreds of dollars for it to be done either
as i get older it sucks more cuz i hate french kissin cuz i feel like i dont have enuff tongue in the game lol
Dr., thanks for this video. Do you know of any dentists or oral surgeons in NYC that would do the laser procedure? i am having trouble finding someone.
seriously best thing i have ever done!! i had it done wi a laser though and they gav me gas so i was out for it haha mmm now i can stick my tongue out.. i had it done yesterday but i gotta say it dont hurt at all just a little bit sore :{
ha ha well said DrHaddix ! I am thinking of undergoing this surgery in the UK , just wanted to ask how long after the surgery the pain will last for and will the surgery make a massive difference to the extension of my tongue
Beginning to doubt seriously how well you could speak before it was done. Based on your vocabulary, I might have recommende that your mouth be sutured closed for the good of all humanity.
yo i had dis shit done like 4 days ago....it hurts like a bitch n im only 12...i was on anistisha so i didnt feel anything n when i woke up my mouth was numb....so was my toung....it was cut and shit so i started to bite my toung and god damn after the numb feeling went away like 3 miutes later...it hurt soooo badley..ii cried like a bitch....my toung was swollen and i cudent eat or anythingg for a day or 2....so i drank milkshakes and stuff and suckd on ice,,,,its the best thing to do..
OK, this comment starts with"yo". Take the rest for what its worth. Sorry you had a bad experience, though you do have a pretty deep vocabulary for 12.
Without an exam I can't tell you if a frenectomy is indicated or not. You should consult with a speech pathologist to determine the exact nature of your particular difficulties. My fee for a lingual frenectomy is $450; it will vary from doctor to doctor. Best of luck to you.
To improve or restore a more effective range of movement to the tongue. Moderate to extreme limitations in the range of movement of the tongue can interfere with speech, eating, and social interactions. Infants with limited tongue movement can have varying degrees of difficulty breastfeeding due to inability to latch on, causing difficulty not only for the infant but mental strain on the concerned mother.
I'm having mine done soon this month, but with some sharp tool not with laser. Are there any advantages of laser treatment other than having less blood and less pain? Does the laser treatment give better results for the tounge's movment and mobility? Is the laser helthier for the tounge in the long term?
Don't take my word for this, but I shouldn't imagine that a scalpel will cause any more pain if anesthetized properly. Aside from that there may be less chance of getting an infection from the equipment, but that shouldn't be an issue either with proper sterilisation.
dude this is so painful u can feel the freaking laser. I guess he didnt freeze that sht enough. Further u go the more it lasts the pain lasts for like a week or 2
You're right. There is no reason this should be a painful procedure; additional anesthetic should be given at the first sign of any sensation. In my experience patients have little to no postoperative pain. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience; hopefully you'll at least get a good result to make your discomfort worth something.
thanks for the response! That Friday he took tylenol w/codeine, a long nap, and since he woke up till today, you wouldn't even have thought he'd had anything done. I'm a little concerned b/c he doesn't stick out his tongue, I'm thinking its b/c of the stitches?? I didn't get to call the dr. today so i'll try tomorrow. I highly recommend this procedure to anyone...especially when they're really young. Hopefully he'll be starting speech therapy in January when he turns 3.
I usually recommend that my patients move their tongues throught the entire range of motion several times daily beginning the day after surgery, but I wouldn't presume to tell you to have your son do so without your surgeon's OK. Sounds like he's well on his way to an excellent outcome. As far as speech, you'll notice improvementes in "s", "SH", "N", an "TH" sounds as the tip of the tongue is better able to contact the palate to make these sounds. Good luck again!
Hi, I got a frenectomy yesterday with laser and my dr put I guess to stitches. It's very painful and the stitches are getting out, but I just got it today. I try to reach my dr, but it was so late. Do you know if that's normal and how long am I going to have pain?
Ice in the form of popsicles under the tongue are very helpful. I'd like to give you advice on medications to take for pain but I don't know your medical history. My patients take ibuprofen for very effective pain control; contact your doctor for his/her advice.
I am a DMD in Pennsylvania and I do quite a bit of lingual frenectomies. Where did get the tool to hold back the patients tongue? I would like to purchase one.
(i posted the following earlier) My son had this done on friday 9/26, yesterday and today he is doing fine and well. No problems at all. Yesterday of course, after the numbing wore off he was NOT happy! His was actually cut with a scalpel, not laser. But it was very quick and fast! He's 2 1/2 years old and we had been debating this procedure since last year. we had oral sugeons telling us not to bother, and speech therapists telling us Yes, do it now! we hope his speech will progress!
I hope your son has a quick and speedy recovery with satisfactory results; as far has his discomfort postoperatively, I hope the oral surgeon had the forethought to give ibuprofen before the procedure to minimize postoperative discofort. Popsicles are an excellent method to deliver cold to the surgical site as well, further decreasing postop pain. Rest assured there is no downside to this procedure; it can only release unrealized potential. Best of wishes again.

thanks 4 reply :) but i have another question, Ive been tongue tied all my life (18 years of age now) and if i were to go for one of these procedures, is there a chance that my speech may be effected (in a negative way). Also ive heard a stupid rumour on some health boards saying that on rare occasions people can choke on their tongues after going 4 this procedure. Any clarification would be great thx:)
