@LtCaradine You can just join Army Sniper School, but in many cases, you have to be selected for Scout Sniper School. Army emphasizes more marksmanship, while Marines emphasize scouting ability with marksmanship. You need an extremely good fitness score to be a Scout Sniper.
I went there when I was becoming a sniper!! It was a tough 10 weeks but it was worth it 100% I served in Afghanistan. Got to staff Sargent then it was my time to go! SEMPERFI! Feel free to ask me any questions!
@Psychoticilluzions I do not believe that you need any prior service before you go to Sniper School, my father was a drill instructor at Parris Island back in the day. He then went to teach the Scout Sniper School later on.

I'm on the Seneca High School MCJROTC Rifle team, and I'm joining the Marines... I'm gonna be going to one of the 4 scout sniper schools (hopefully quantico or camp pendleton).
I have a question for anyone willing to answer. I have been shooting for a long time and I have recently had a problems with my hearing. My question is do any ground troops use ear protection? If so how do people communicate? and are there ways to reduce injury? I have to constantly talk to my shooter or my spotter... Some times we will mess up and not put ear protection back in before firing. We don't really have a choice considering we need to converse..

@upthedub2 Just an enthusiast. I have been shooting on my own property with a group of other individuals. The longest public range near me is only at 450m. I have our range set at 2 distances 900m and 750m. We are using a .338 LM and .408. Its a ton of fun, but I have to remove my ear plugs to hear my spotter or vise verse. I have had times when I will confirm a shot not noticing my ear protection out. Lost a shit load of hearing in my ears... and also have tried being in different positions.
They can be silent or loud. It's difficult sometimes because you must take your eye off the scope if they are silent clicks..which can be dangerous!
We use this method because sometimes we are bogged down - and one simple movement and it may all be over!
THAT BEING SAID, moving your jaw slightly is a lot more stealthy, versus moving hands. Moving your hands is like waving to the enemy and shouting: "COME GET ME!!!"

I knew a Marine Marksmanship Insructer, he perfers recruits that rarely or haven't shot a firearm much compared to the ones which have. Usually most of the recruits who have frequently shot firearms develop bad habits which effected their aim compared the ones who are fresh and will strickly usually pay more attention to the insructers.

@REWifey06 If you believe in such a general thing and it helps you in combat, so be it. But it does not matter the gender of the individual. If he or she wants to eliminate said target with a tool for a long range kill, and they commit to it, they will get the job done.
That being said, generally people usually say that females make better "assassins" over males. Maybe just the instinct of being able to take in the surroundings from being a mother, and assessing the possible dangers, I assume.

@REWifey06 ... I am a Marine, and I know plenty of Female Marines who can shoot very well. However, the absence of Female Marines in combat/sniper evironments has less to do with whether or not they can get the job done and more to do with how long it takes and how much it takes out of them physically. Carrying a 75lb rifle, plus ammo, plus gear to survive on for up to 2 weeks is so physicaly demanding that even most male Marines drop out of sniper school, and they are already used to it...

@spymode1 That is a big issue, because recruits need to grow up after boot camp... but just remember that the average age of a Marine is 19 years old, the average age of Army Spec Ops is 30; experience counts, but that's why they are elite. Marines do very well and beyond.
@deguimerautube Yeah that is my biggest concern. I have vastly improved in my personal judgement. I played 4 years of 4A Highschool ball went from 200 to 340 lbs over that 4 years at 5'10 thats big. I went from 340 to 290 in 3 months and im losing the rest by december just to join. I know the experience stand point as well. My father was in the AF 27 years he was a First Sergent for the 56th Rescue Squad. I met the Pj's and heard the stories. I know what it takes, i am just trying to get there.

If so how do people communicate? and are there ways to reduce injury? I have to constantly talk to my shooter or my spotter... Some times we will mess up and not put ear protection back in before firing. We don't really have a choice considering we need to converse..

@upthedub2 Just an enthusiast. I have been shooting on my own property with a group of other individuals. The longest public range near me is only at 450m. I have our range set at 2 distances 900m and 750m. We are using a .338 LM and .408. Its a ton of fun, but I have to remove my ear plugs to hear my spotter or vise verse. I have had times when I will confirm a shot not noticing my ear protection out. Lost a shit load of hearing in my ears... and also have tried being in different positions.

They can be silent or loud. It's difficult sometimes because you must take your eye off the scope if they are silent clicks..which can be dangerous!
We use this method because sometimes we are bogged down - and one simple movement and it may all be over!
THAT BEING SAID, moving your jaw slightly is a lot more stealthy, versus moving hands. Moving your hands is like waving to the enemy and shouting: "COME GET ME!!!"

@Snowjam55, civilian shooting isn't really like military shooting. I knew a Marine Marksmanship Insructer, he perfers recruits that rarely or haven't shot a firearm much compared to the ones which have. Usually most of the recruits who have frequently shot firearms develop bad habits which effected their aim compared the ones who are fresh and will strickly usually pay more attention to the insructers.

@REWifey06 If you believe in such a general thing and it helps you in combat, so be it. But it does not matter the gender of the individual. If he or she wants to eliminate said target with a tool for a long range kill, and they commit to it, they will get the job done.
That being said, generally people usually say that females make better "assassins" over males. Maybe just the instinct of being able to take in the surroundings from being a mother, and assessing the possible dangers, I assume.

However, the absence of Female Marines in combat/sniper evironments has less to do with whether or not they can get the job done and more to do with how long it takes and how much it takes out of them physically. Carrying a 75lb rifle, plus ammo, plus gear to survive on for up to 2 weeks is so physicaly demanding that even most male Marines drop out of sniper school, and they are already used to it...

@REWifey06 ... don't get me wrong... im sure there are some women out there who can out work a number of Marines... including me... i dont claim to be the end all, be all of the Male species... but i am in great shape and those guys can run me into the ground... as far as having X amount of years in infantry to go to sniper school, no, there is no time requirement.. however, applicants must be an infantry MOS (rifleman, machine-gunner, artilery, etc) and have qualified expert with the M-16...

@spymode1 That is a big issue, because recruits need to grow up after boot camp... but just remember that the average age of a Marine is 19 years old, the average age of Army Spec Ops is 30; experience counts, but that's why they are elite. Marines do very well and beyond.

@deguimerautube Yeah that is my biggest concern. I have vastly improved in my personal judgement. I played 4 years of 4A Highschool ball went from 200 to 340 lbs over that 4 years at 5'10 thats big. I went from 340 to 290 in 3 months and im losing the rest by december just to join. I know the experience stand point as well. My father was in the AF 27 years he was a First Sergent for the 56th Rescue Squad. I met the Pj's and heard the stories. I know what it takes, i am just trying to get there.
