I've always thought this was a worthy successor to Match Game '7x. Everybody seems to forget that the 'magic' DEVELOPED with the previous version. Watch some of the early episodes of Match Game '73, to see what I mean. (Brett has said in inteviews that they were very lucky to have had that combination, but no one TRIED for it, it just kind of happened) And the ratings weren't bad. The biggest problem was that ABC aired this at 12noon. MANY affiliates had noon newscasts and didn't clear it.
I'd like to give a fair rating & assessment of the four different versions of "Match Game" that aired from 1962 to 1999, but I haven't seen the original "The Match Game" (hosted by who else but the great Gene Rayburn) that originally aired on NBC from 1962 to 1969. I'll just say the best version of "MG" is the classic one we've all gotten to know & love ("Match Game '73-'79", "Match Game" from 1979-1982 & "Match Game PM", of course) & "Match Game ('98)" rating the worst version. "MG '90'"s OK.
@ChihuahuaboyDH Of course I've always known that "Match Game '73-'79", "Match Game" (1979-82) & "Match Game PM" were all hosted by the great Gene Rayburn as well! "MG PM" aired in syndication from 1975-81.
R.I.P., Gene Rayburn (emcee), Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly (regular panelists), Johnny Olson (announcer) & Mark Goodson & Bill Todman (producers & creators). You are all deeply & sadly missed.
I think the syndicator for Feud wanted a companion piece and might have considered Match Game for it. But game shows outside Feud, Wheel, TPiR, and J! were getting out of vogue by 1991. Everything premiering in 1990 was gone by 1991(MG, LMAD90, TTTT90, Tic Tac, Joker, Challengers, Trump Card, Quiz Kids CHallenge). Daytime WOF and Concentration stopped making new episodes. Davidson Pyramid got cancelled by Xmas 1991.
Brad Garret had it somewhat right. The LA Kings had just completed a landmark deal sending the Great Gretzky to tinseltown, and "capped" it off by advertizing for what turned out to be one of the best NHL All-Star Games to date, and the last really significant event held at Chicago Stadium. The 'Hawks had a power-packed team that year, winning the Norris Division (beating the Red Wings in standings), to lose in the first round of the playoffs.
Lets put it this way guys, nothing will ever compare to Match Game 7X, ever. There's no way to mimic the cohesiveness that the panel and Gene had. Everyone had a genuinely good time and just enjoyed making us laugh. This format was okay, Ross did a decent job. I think that they should've did a remake for 2000, but with CNR and Brett involved either as panelists, producers or both, to recreate that magic.
This is a decent revival of "Match Game", but isn't as good as "Match Game 70x" (with Gene Rayburn). It is, however, better than "Match Game ('98)" (with Michael Burger).
To be fair, he got the easy question. Hers was much more random and WTF with the condom answers that is stupid. Paper towels or toilet paper were the correct response.
this version wasn't as good...the magic wasn't there with the panel or the host. HOWEVER...considering the act they were trying to follow, at least they didn't completely screw up the format...they just freshened it up. The theme was decent...the set was similar to the original...and the opening credits were a take on the original. Not bad...certainly better than the 1998 version.
I STILL think MG/HS biggest problem was Jon Bauman for the HS host and no scripted answers for the HS segment. If they didn't want to use Peter Marshall, I would have much rather seen Gene host the whole hour.
The combination of both wasn't so bad as it was that Jon Bauman wasn't a great host and Mark Goodson deviated from the original Hollywood Squares format.
Actually, this version did pretty well in the ratings. BUT, it fell victim to the attitude that started sweeping network executives that SOAP OPERA viewers were 'more loyal' than GAME SHOW viewers.
As to why only the winner got to keep the money, remember they used the money to keep 'score' on this version. (The 'Match-Up' rounds required a new way to keep score. Not to mention the fact that the 'match elimination' rule wasn't used on this version.)
Ew. This is painful to watch for many reasons. Nell Carter looks like a beached whale. Second rate celebrities and that plastic fake host....yuck. No wonder nobody saw this. What a disaster.
They should have placed it in the slot where Loving was instead.Neither ABC affiliate I had(WVII-Bangor & WXYZ-Detroit) during this run aired it.You'd think the networks would have been aware of the fact that most affiliates want to show local news in that 12 Noon slot.
Oh the final episode of Matcg Game 90. It wasn't that bad of a revival but it just had a long history behind that to follow up on. The celebrities hats are nothing to snear at since it's just the panel being the panel. The contestants look like they are having a good time while staying competitve. While CONDOMS may seem a bit excessive it's alright since double entendres were the pinnacle of answers. While things may look low it's still anybodys game. If they have a schtick it's all good.
Wow, what a truely horrible version of Match Game. Ross is about as dry as a spoonful of peanut butter on hot summer day. I can't believe Charles agreed to appear on this show. It looks like it was produced for about $1.98. No wonder it only lasted a season or two.
Gene Rayburn was slated to host this version of ``Match Game'' but he was deemed too old by ABC executives and Bert Convy was also slated to host but a brain tumor forced him to the sidelines. He died in 1991. The reason why this version didn't last was because many affiliates aired news at 12 noon.
After watching this for only 6 minutes? I can see why it's the "final" one. Charles is still a classic to view. However the panel seems intent not to come up with legit matches, but lame responses that are supposed to be funny?!? The classics are still the best, depending on the contestant doing good/bad with their answer--and finding out (within the context of "good taste") if they matched. Sure they tweaked the censor rules at times. But they didn't seem intent on "who can out gross who"
I miss this version of MATCH GAME '90! When will show reruns of this on GSN again? Plus, where the hell's is NELL CARTER NOW? I hope she didn't passed away.
Yep, and he played it up for the rest of the episode(after one commercial break, he had his arm in a sling; after the next, he was wearing a cervical collar; after the next, he was using a crutch. And at the end, all of the celebrities fell to the floor en masse!).
Did they mention on the air it was the last episode? It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't because in the 12 noon timeslot on ABC stations had the option of airing this or local news. A good portion did the latter.

I am soooo dumb. Audience: How dumb are you? I am soooo dumb. I just now realized Brad Garrett played (blank) after all these years.
Answer: Herman Munster. Did you match my answer? If so, light up the green triangle.

That is one of the problems. NBC should've made them stand alone shows rather than an hour long version of a 2 in 1 game show.

Maybe so. But I was shocked to see this, since I honestly never knew this version ever existed. (My affiliate must have opted not to air it.)
But at least Charles was in his rightful seat, unlike the MG-HS Hour.
And at least it was more like the Match Game we know compared to that '98 version I'd rather wipe from my mind.
