  • how much did it cost to bore it out? sounds real gud

  • so how much hp u gt

  • hey man u said yall are gong to the ss clp i have that same ls body style would love to buy those light from u

  • Let me clarify it does look from the intake bolt facing straight up that those are Vortecs, just curious about the valve covers because I like that look a lot better than the center bolt.

  • @kerobinsonii yeah those are true vortecs, I just used the modified adapter plates to go from center bolt to old school cover. I think summit carries them. Thanks.

  • @frtaylor29 I will look into it, would love to have different covers for my truck. BTW That is a very nice Monte Carlo.

  • How did you use standard valve covers when Vortec heads are center bolt?

  • @kerobinsonii They didn't make any vortecs at all pre 1986?

  • @Deciblaster When people refer to "Vortec" they generally mean 96-99 64 cc 350 truck heads. The term Vortec has been used on V6 and V8 GM engines since around 1988. All vortec's are center bolt valve covers as well the intake bolts are a dead give away as to the type. There are only 8 intake bolts.

  • beautiful sound

  • do u know what kind of numbers you were pulling? im about to do my 305 and im tryin to find a set of vortecs for it with my dads leftovers. i just wanted to know what i could expect

  • @85fbird this setup is pretty hi-tech, but a basic 305 vortec set up your looking upwards of 300+ hp and 325-350 torque depending on your cam selection. good street engine.

  • @frtaylor29 this is a 96 or up 305 vortec right?

  • @keith91z28 its an old school block with retro fit lifters...but the heads are true vortec 906 castings from the 96 and up 350 engines yes.

  • @frtaylor29 ahh ok, you just left the valves at the regular 1.94s right? I want to build a 305 as a project.

  • @keith91z28 actually I took a 2.02 valve and cut it down to a 1.98. I wanted to get the largest valve I could on the small 305 bore.

  • @frtaylor29 Oh ok, how is the throttle response and torque curve of this motor compared to that of a mild 350?

  • this may sound dumb but does anyone know what kinda fuel mileage a car like this would get? i am buying a buick regal with a stock 305 4 barrel and im wondering. thanks

  • @pantera580efi this motor got around 20-22mpg highway and about 15-18 city. the more efficient the heads & ignition system with the right lean rich condition carb...you can see pretty decent numbers out of an older engine like this. plus this motor make more torque then the stock 305 so you don't have to run the pedal down as far in certain situations which equates in less fuel usage.

  • @pantera580efi I have an 86 monte carlo ss with the 305 h.o. and vortec heads...It gets about 15 city and 19 highway...You can get more, but that's going to slow for me haha

  • Sounds absolutely beautiful man. Excelent work!

  • @cuda408 Thanks man, i really appreciate it.

  • now whats a true flowmaster just the muffler or the pipes to with them sry im new at this ive bin trying to work on my caprice for a while took it to carshows and every thing i can do with it lol

  • @jimcaprice true flowmaster will have flowmaster imprinted in the muffler it self along with the manufacturer part number.

  • maybe u can help me with this i built my 305 my vid is up if u wanna see however i have a holley 600 on it vac secondaries single pump my cam didnt leave me much vac. so i had to change the power valve it idles in drive at about 3 psi i put a 1.o hlg pv in it and it didnt like it at all so i but a 3.5 in it and it seems to be fine but a lil rich. i cant see the fuel coming out of the venturies at idle but i can at 2k rpm but barely shouldnt i be able to or which pv should i use help ?

  • i sent u a video of my rev dont kno what i want to put on my 89 caprice i was thinking of flowmaster 44s ? good or bad

  • @jimcaprice yeah I would go with the super 44...its one of flowmasters better flowing mufflers and would give you a deep aggressive tone. I have one on my s10 4.3, (which i have a vid of) just make sure it s true flowmaster.

  • my buddy is selling me a 350 bored out 383 stroker but its bin sitting for few year should i get it and fix it up ? like how much hp can it put out ? i want to at lease put out 400hp my 305 its ony putting out about 180hp factory motor tbi carb so im really thing of buying the 350 bored out to 383 stroker

  • i got a 305 tbi could i get it bored out like some where to a 383 ?

  • @jimcaprice sorry, but no, in order to make a 383 you would need a 350 block to start with and a 400 crank (3.750). With a 305 block the most cubes your gonna be able to pull is about 317ci bored completely out, unless you use a 400 crank in a 305 block which would make it a 340ci bored .060 over; which would require a custom cut set of pistons...& that runs into money. A 340 stroker would make some pretty serious torque numbers for a small mtr but would never match the HP of a true 383 stroker.

  • my 88 monte ss with the305 stock cam heads and a performer intake non-ccc qjet true duels and headers ran 13,80s

  • How much hp does it have?

  • @1979corvette1 about 375-400hp est.

  • thats bad ass i love it, and a lot of people hate 305s i like them alot, i had a 305 bored 40 over with flat top pistons i had a 222 duration cam with .467 lift int and ext with a performer intake and 650 dp holley, it was pretty quick i took the cam, intake and carb and put it in a 350 and it was good too, but actually it was alot snappier and aggressive in the 305 which i think performed better, that goes to show u that 305 or 350 i think they both can be powerful cheers

  • @Peterz28s Thanks for the post, sounds like you had a nice thumper yourself. 305's, & 350's are nice if built right, but 383 Stroker's & 406's are KING!

  • @frtaylor29 i had the vortec set up on my 305 a while back lasted about a week and blew the bottom end. i said fuck it and built myslef a nice 406 and yes my friend they are KING! so much torque it drives me crazyyyy

  • @MrVicarious666 bad ass man, bad ass....

  • @MrVicarious666 you obviously need elementary training in how to make a motor work and stay together. need to get somebody who knows how to put a motor together that will stay together. Ya probably took short cuts, didn't get good machine work and parts. Tell me what you did and I can tell you where you screwed up. My 69 Nova/305 turns 11.99 in the quarter and I drive it to the track and it is only a stage 3 motor. It redlines at 7100 rpm and stays together! How come i can do it and you can't?

  • alright whats with the snappy remarks? i didnt have enough money at the time to go all out on a 305 and build it up i just threw some parts on to see what it would do thats all. and if you could post that vid of the nova that be pretty interesting to see. you spraying her? regaurdless i built my 406 myself and spent some time and money under the hood it runs 10.2s all motor all day so if your on the east coast close to atco raceway id love to take you 2 school, show you what a real motor is.

  • @MrVicarious666 After what I've seen and heard so far I think you're dillusional.

  • @frtaylor29 what you say is true about the 383 and 406, but I have outrun several of them with my 305. I can make ANY small block run like a raped ape. It just takes knowledge that comes from years of experience and knowing what works and what doesn't. Different cubic inches take different combinations. Don't fool yourself about the 305. I have left many strokers in the dust, whining and wondering what the hell just happened to them. I may just be an old redneck, but I can build winning motors.

  • @kenzo5716 well, your exactly right with a lot of experience and some extra cash you can make the 305 run excellent, (proven above^). A poorly built 400 (as they were is in the 70's) was lucky to break the 14's, but with todays technology you can easily make a 305 leave them in the dust, its just a matter of if its worth it. If you put all that money in the 305, with heads, lightweight 2618 Maule pistons, roller cams and such....you know what that would do on a 383 or a 400 small block.

  • @frtaylor29 I do not use light weight "Maule" pistons or roller cams. All but my stage 3 and 4 motors use inexpensive heads found in most junk yards and lowly hydraulic cams. My stage 3 and 4 motors use simple solid lifter cams sold by Speedway Motors for less than 70 bucks. Plus, you have an option of hot hydraulic cam in place of the solid in the stage 3 motor if you choose.

  • @kenzo5716 One more thing... I use inexpensive CAST pistons in my stage 1 and stage 2 motors and Kieth Black Hyperutectic pistons in my stage 3 motor. I only use forged pistons in my stage 4 motors. Guys with their heads in car magazines today think the more money they can dump into a motor the faster it will go. Well, that is true to a point. However, knowing the right combination of parts and good machine work along with a few tricks learned over time through trial and error is the key.

  • Pretty impressive... Sounds nice. Are the Vortec heads the 062 or 059 casting? Did you do any port work?

  • @TunedPortZ28 Thanks, the Vortec heads are actually the 906 castings, I have done some medium port work, they flowed 287 @ .600 and 278 @ .500, 254 @ .400, they also flow 190 @ .500 on the exhaust side.

  • what are your track times and horsepower if you dont mind me asking. and good choice to stay with the 305 im going to build up my 305tpi soon.

  • @1987TransAmws6 Thanks....Horsepower is right in the 390-400 range and about 425 torque, with the gear I have & the 3500 stall converter my 1/4 mile times are in the 13.50-13.90 depending on the weather & track prep.

305TPI sounds good, what kind of heads are you going to run?

  • @frtaylor29 not bad numbers. and im gonna run L98 aluminum heads.

  • that thing is fucking nice im glad u suck with the 305, i keep my 305 but mines is .060 over and has .525 solid lift cam ,toker2 intake and edlebrock carb

  • @murdamonte thanks man, yeah its just a spare parts build up, I wanted to see what i could get out of a 305 with what I had, sounds like you have a little screamer yourself.

  • @frtaylor29 thanks alot, i wanted to ask u how is its "street manner" with a 3600 stall converter i have a stock one in my trans and i wanted a 3500 stall p.s does u can take off alot better with it

  • @murdamonte To be honest its pretty hardcore for the street (too much), although I'm not going to lie it takes off pretty hard and would stall up to about 3000-3100 with slicks. If your looking for a good street/strip converter, I'd go with the B&M 3000 and only a B&M they stall better than any other brands I have ever owned.

Oh, I have run Edelbrock carb in the past too, they run good, but when I tested a 750 VS a 750 Holley I picked up 2 tenths at the track, so you should try a Holley.

  • @frtaylor29 thanks for the help and im switching to a holley i put the edelbrock on cause i got it cheap, i will keep u posted on the changes thanks alot

  • @murdamonte hey, I was gonna mention, the toker2 intake is a good intake, but you should look into a Professional Products Crosswind Intake and give it a try, it made a killer difference in my motor & its very affordable, get one & I guarantee a gain in power & some down low torque.

just look it up on google

  • Can u send me the link to that cam #12-601-8 your info is helping a lot I'm kinda new to the cam idea

  • @GAG91690 well I did some research for you and discussed it with my dad, for a good overall street strip cam that's not to radical, since your interested in the Thumpers, I would suggest a COMP "Thumper" Cam #12-600-4, its 138.95 from Summit Racing, just make sure you buy new lifters with it as well, you never wanna use old lifters with a new cam, as far as they go I'll suggest Rhodes Lifters, best we have ever used in my opinion & we I have used a lot in my day. Part #RHL-8178 from Summit too.

  • isnt that a 2 bolt main its runnin like a top good job i like to modify my 305 can u send me more info on the cam such as price? is that the stock crank as well? thanks

  • @GAG91690 yes it is a 2 bolt main block, the cam can be found at compcams.com under SB Chevy Hydraulic roller, price runs at about $240-$275 bucks, its a great cam. The crank is a stock GM reground crank as well. If you ever do any work to your 305 try some Vortec Heads they are about the best your can get for a 305 at a good price, they make killer torque numbers, which is what a small 305 short stroke needs.

  • @frtaylor29 thanks alot man. i was thinking of gettin the thumpr cam isnt the 86 305 motor a hydraulic flat tappet?

  • @GAG91690 You're right man, the 86 blocks are flat tappet, the way you can tell is the 3 bolt down bosses in the lifter valley, if it has the bosses it's roller block. Some camaros, trucks & monte carlos came with roller blocks, but gm used flat tappet cams. Thumper cams are good cams, I guess it just depends on what your trying to do, & how much cam you can stand.

i like the #12-601-8 thumper cam if your going the flat tappet route...

  • so how much power does it produce with all these mods

  • @denmark1533 A similar engine we tested produce about 380 HP, but this engine has a few better parts on it, so I would estimate close to 400 HP.
