Jeff is the musician who loves and repects all music, and listens to it!! This is what an intelligent person does to understand what it is to be on top of all the basic sound, timing, clear precise notes,
soft hand string touch, so you can't hear the string pop, having your tone exact, not having anything else to do except play guitar, and not stop. He never goes back and forth with effects, and other stuff,
he very rarley uses anything other then a whah, and his fingers. Minimalist!
To this day I thank my lucky stars that I was able to see this show.Jeff was on fire that night in Detroit so many years ago.Stevie Ray opened then came out and dueled Goin Down with Jeff.Rock and roll heaven at the highest level. Thanks for posting this.It took me right back to that magic night!
@tonysuss I was at that Detroit show as well. Cobo Hall!! Sound was awful, but that band was off the charts. Saw that line-up again here in NYC at BB Kings 15 years later and it was even better. Best show I've ever seen. Forget it man. on electric guitar there's Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix (or Jimi Hendirx and Jeff Beck--take your pick!) and then there's everybody else.
@necklix I could say a lot of things in response to that, but why? Hendrix certainly doesn't need me to speak up for him, and if you think I'm gonna say anything negative about Beck in print you don't know me.
But one thing we should all remind ourselves of (for various reasons) is that the Jeff Beck you see here is a 44 year old guy with the legendary Terry Bozzio on the drums. Hendrix died at 27 and almost all the footage you see of him is at these 60's rock festivals w/ 250,000+ people.
@tonysuss saw this fantastic show when the tour stopped at MSG. That same night The Fabulous Thunderbirds (w/Jimmy Vaughn) were part of a blues extravaganza at The Beacon Theater. Figuring SRV would make his way with uptown to jam with his brother we bought tickets for the midnight Blues show. 2AM SRV comes out and the brothers light up the stage. Regardless how good that was, the best song of the night and the one that stays with me to this day, is the SRV jam with JB on Goin' Down.
@tonysuss Jeff Beck has this amazing ability to just keep getting better, and well hell, he was better then everyone back then. He is kicking ass all over the world, he has the steller reputation as The Absolute Master of Guitar, there is nothing he can not do, and all the another guitarist have bowed their heads to him, Slash says, Ya Jeff Beck man, oh he is everyones favorate guitar player he is the one we all want to be, but, we know better, so we listen in awe!
The lethal line-up of Beck, Bozzio & Hymas... WOW! Whether coolly irreverent (as he so cheekily is here), or wickedly music Jeff always delivers. And while Page, Santana, Satrani, Via, Perry, and the lot may bow down to him, one wishes they would take note of how to make time, space and the right notes - as well as knowing when to start and when to stop - work for the music. Genius stuff!
A real god of the guitar!!!
