The US 76mm gun was mediocre compared to the german 75mm and 88mm guns as well as inferior to the 17lber (76.2mm) british gun.
The US 76mm gun however was not a field mod like the firefly thus there were many more of them. Though it was inferior it was still much better than the short 75mm.
I really like how you make a blanket statement by stating that the U.S. 76.2mm is inferior to the German "75mm." Of course, far be it from revisionists such as you to acknowledge the fact that the German panzer fleet made use of two primary weapons in the 75mm caliber, and the 76.2mm is on par to the most common one (the KwK 40.)
Although the US 76mm was inferior, it did the job quite well for most of the enemy AFV's such armed Shermans encountered. Which by far wasn't Panthers, Tigers or King Tigers. And the British 17 pounder was designed as a AT gun.
No thats the sherman M4A3(76)E8 or the Easy Eight as it was called. Basically a Sherman with a better gun, Superior in most respects to the Panzer 4 series, and more of a match vs the Panther and tiger. I believe its gun could defeat a tiger and panther about 500-700m out, and with specialty ammo, much father.
According to Col. Jimmie Leach who drove his Easy Eight into Bastogne on 12/26/44 as Company Commander under Creighton Abrams, the guns of the Sherman were not a match for the Panzers. The advantage had to be in numbers of tanks and the fact that the Sherman turret turned under power and the Panzer was hand cranked. Col. Leach's tank, Blockbuster is featured in the Corgi series of war models. I am producing a memoir of Col. Leach's history as the last great WWII tanker.
The sherman was quick to build and ez for upkeep but was not designed to battle other tanks...its primary roll was to coordinate with the troops to further infantry missions.
ur all nerds bout tanks

This is a M4A1E8 with a radial Continental R975 C4 Whirlwind engine, it is very late war or post war.

I believe that type of Sherman was called the Firefly. It had an upgraded gun to combat the heavier German armor.
