'Reactos last time I checked was still basically a toy.

@slimmdogg420 It seems that they've picked up the pace this year. The newer 2003 style memory manager has certainly helped. The old one worked more like in Windows 95. Plus now there is the GSOC team helping. The biggest thing I'd like to see them fix is the USB situation. You cannot enable USB 2.0 on real hardware and get it to boot, and legacy USB interferes with whatever input devices you use (even PS2 mice). They seem to be making progress on that, but it is not in trunk yet.
Won't lie, Windows is better, BUT for what ReactOS the devs have done a frankly amazing job. It was never going to be Windows as it is essentially a clone, but how good they've made it for a clone is unbelievable.
@slimmdogg420 I've read up on the development, it isn't Linux. It does use WINE technology (as in, how the APIs from Wine are implemented) so some stuff works better (Win32 APIs) but stuff like NTDLL, USER32, KERNEL32, GDI32 and ADVAPI just can't work due to the architecture of the OS.
Trust me, it isn't Linux - it doesn't run the Linux kernel, it runs a completely new kernel which is reverse-engineered from leaked Windows 2000 source code. You can read up the information on Wikipedia.
@slimmdogg420 It doesn't use KDE anyway though... It uses a custom made desktop environment - I have no idea what it's called. What made you think it uses KDE? :S
@Warmijwilf I would post a link if youtube would let me but i was just looking at their message board. The attitude was bad towards anyone with ideas or gripes with the OS.It really don't matter though this thing wont be a usable system for I would say 10 years by that time do you think windows will even be relevant?
"ReactOS simply didn't exist if there was not a GNU/Linux-ecosystem. There wouldn't be GPL, Wine DLL's etc."
WTF??? ReactOS exists thx to Windows, not thx to Linux or Wine. We just adapted some stuff of them later in the Development. If you don't know ROS's past, then better be quiet before ppl start to laugh at you.
@slimmdogg420 But... they use Wine DLLs because not everything in the Windows architecture can be reverse engineered so easily. They admit that... have you installed it? It says "Thanks to Wine" and then if you read into details they explain they need Wine DLLs to gap the bridge over the stuff they can't put into it yet (eg fully developed APIs). Without Linux, Wine would never been as developed... and as such neither would ReactOS. Do you understand yet or need more explanation?
@Warmijwilf I use wine all the time.I tried to install it and was only able to boot it in a VirtualBox VM.I did install it to the VM and it would install software just fine but most failed to load. These are all programs that I use or have used in wine.I just think we are far off from seeing a workable version of this.I love the Idea of ReactOS but I dont think we will ever see a good stable version do you?
@slimmdogg420 Also I don't think you can talk about not knowing ROS's past considering you've been thinking all this time it's a Linux OS that runs KDE.
@Warmijwilf Checking their site shows not too much has changed since when they first started, not to bash them, but I don't see a real reason for people to use their OS yet. You'll see better results running WINE in linux. " Also I don't think you can talk about not knowing ROS's past considering you've been thinking all this time it's a Linux OS that runs KDE."
So because someone posted false info on the internet my opinion is void?
Are you the same dev that was on their message-board?
@slimmdogg420 But you don't see the point - it is an alpha for a reason, it isn't stable yet. Yes it is going to be flawed and there is little to no reason to actually run it yet. It will be considered good when the actual final product is unveiled, which will be when all the reverse engineering is finished and new, "from scratch" APIs (such as ADVAPI and GDI32) can be implemented effectively to work under that environment as opposed to porting ones made for linux via wine.
@Warmijwilf Okay, I hang out in their forums and read their code commits. The problem isn't so much that they use Wine code. In fact, they've helped Wine by cleaning up their code and making it more compatible with Windows apps. Yes, a part of Wine has to only work with Linux. That is true. But they don't use those parts. Once you go so far from the Linux side into Wine, it should be a lot like Windows. Plus what they are doing is not "reverse engineering" in the classical sense.
@slimmdogg420 And "So because someone posted false info on the internet my opinion is void?"
I wasn't saying that. I was referring to you saying "If you don't know ROS's past, then better be quiet before ppl start to laugh at you" when you yourself didn't know much about it until I corrected you. And no, I'm not any dev.
@slimmdogg420 It WOULDN'T have been successful without Wine because the binary compatibility would be awful. It still isn't great, but it's nowhere near as bad as it would have been without Wine APIs.
@Warmijwilf It wasn't copied from the leaked 2K code. They used clean room reverse engineering tactics. That's when you get someone not connected to the product to review things and make a summary, and preferably pass it by an attorney first to make sure there is nothing infringing in there. Then you use the rough outline to code by. If they had used the leaked source (and audits have show they hadn't), then they would have gotten much further writing it. Besides, it's more like 2003.
@PlumGurly Where did you think they got the "rough outline to code by" from? It wasn't copied from the source code of Win2000, I didn't say that, but clearly they used it so they could make it more compatible than a regular Linux+WINE install is (When I used it, it was a lot more compatible with Win32 apps as opposed to, say, Gentoo + WINE)
It failed to install on my computer. It started to load then the screen went black and stayed black. I seriously wanted to see what this was like first hand. The latest version I tried 0.3.12 (alfa). I expected it to be buggy - but was more dissapointed it wouldnt load. As for playing it off the Live CD - I couldnt do anything with it.
I hope and pray they get this thing streamlined to the Beta stage. I couldnt donate to something that doesnt even load on my computer. I'll check it later.
I haven't installed it on my computer, but I did test it on my VirtualBox. Not exactly very satisfied with it, but it is a great job being done by the developers. Wish the developers all the best.
@jimmypictures It's actually Windows for those who want a legal, free OS that (assuming it ever gets past it's alpha stage) will likely have more support for programs than other versions of Windows, and would have an opensource community. I don't see how you got the two mixed up.
@BigJ2008youngmoney It is better if you test it first in a virtual machine (use VirtualBox form Sun, it is easy to use and free). Don´t use ReactOS directly it is not ready jet
@maximilian700 If you cannot type anything, then try disabling all USB support in your CMOS. The USB support seems to interfere with PS2 devices. have you even used 7? it runs very well, you would be surprised... I have nothing NEAR a quarter of the minimum requirements to run VI$TA... but I am running windows 7 like xp! I will agree though, macs are better... just don't say windows 7 is bad, K?
well, windows 7.... MAY run o.k on your system, as long as it turns off aero... thats about the only thing... but I would say just stay with XP.... or buy a new computer xD
i'm really excited to see where this project will be in 5 years. unfortunately, at this time, it's not useful for much. i have a feeling that it someday will be, however.
I couldn't say it's "bogus". If ReactOS is flawed in any way, or if the logic behind the whole effort behind it is flawed, I don't think "bogus" would be the word for it.
ReactOS is to create an OS that's utterly compatible with MSWindows, of almost ANY version (which MSWindows itself can't do.)
**Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!**
The effort--I imagine--has both popular and (more importantly) legal blessing because much of the IT landscape is monopolistically dominated by MS.
it aims for compatability in the windows NT series only, that is, windows 2000, 2003, XP and Vista. not 98 or 95, if you include that as part of MSWindows.
it's a new os type , not a unixoid not bsd , not windows based , not solaris or wtf/e
sadly for this the ability to run EXE n'shit is one thing , building a whole os around it , and one that's based on an outdated MS product is seriously bogus

NT is still around, known as XP and Vista. Vienna build 62## is the latest version of windows. it is still based on NT and would be released in a few years time, so NT still has a long time ahead.
Well, it is still in development, and I think it will be great OS. It is like a free Windows, but it is not a clone! I cant explain it to you now, anyway, it supports a lot of apps and drivers for Windows, and in future it will probably support everything. I don't think it is some kind of stealing or duplicating, it's simply another OS that supports Windows stuff.
I tried it some months ago on two PCs, it boots but cannot be installed. The live CD version also boots up but freezes the computers. They were a Pentium 4 with 2.66 GHz processor, 1.5 GB of RAM and a Pentium 2 with 128 mb of RAM.
how did you get the internet to work in reactos? i tried it in vmware player and the internet doesnt work which is so lame... if the internet works on reactos then ill redownload vmware player and then get reactos again tell me how to get the internet to work please!
I really don't understand the point of ReactOS. Seeing as it shares a great deal of its code base with Wine, what advantages does it have over Wine? Considering that most people's complains about non-windows OSes revolve around the lack of certain windows-specific programs as opposed to any complaint about the OS itself (not that there aren't any) wouldn't it be better to get windows programs to run on these other OSes? That said, I like ReactOS but more in an academic way than practical.
Running compatibility in another OS isn't efficient. It is incredibly slow to run that because it is taking system resources and is like running two OS's at once. Thats why reactos would be the better alternative in the future once it progresses more.
That's not true at all, Wine has the (theoretical) overhead equivalent to running Qt applications in Gnome (ie negligible if you've got the memory). Wine DOES NOT replicate the vast majority of win32 functionality, but instead just translates it to the underlying subsystems (the linux/bsd kernel and X11) so what you said about it being like running two OSes at once is just false... There *are* caveats regarding wine's current state, but those are because of convenience, not necessity.
No copyrighted code found. Sure Microsoft doesn't want anyone to know that a part of their w2k code was available in the internet. ReactOS project was born when this part was published. So why wouldn't the developers of reactOS use it as a start of their windows like OS?
And the sad part is that nothing radical has changed since reactOS birth.
Maybe I'm wrong (and I hope so), but if I'm right, looks like ReactOS has no future..
It's a OS with a mock NT kernel (this is a guess only) and it uses Windows drivers. It BSoD's like hell too. I've watched it BSoD about 8 times within 15 minutes one time.
If anyone is successfully using React OS; could please post your comment to explain how you find it useful ad is it a realistic potential alternative to Windows.
Potential? Yes. But it needs a LOT more development. Many kinds of hardware don't work, few programs run well, and it's not extremely stable. If you are looking for an immediate alternative, try Linux. If you want a perfect Windows clone, it may be a few more years.
I'm a bit enthusiastic about this project (even though I have left Windows for real OSes), I wonder if it will be able to use this for i.e. games (which is a reason many people stick with Win), if it can be less bloated than XP and if it can support DX (which I don't know) it has a fair good chance to use as a high-performace OS for gaming (which would be pretty cool)
Dudes, a reliable source told me that the ReactOS project had been suspended. Reason: one of the contributors threw a spanner in the works by contributing PROPRIETARY software .. which would have led to ReactOS being a illegal product. Is this report true? If not, what's the latest news. I guess I can always look this up, but I'm hoping one of youse can help point me to the best quality news of this.
OK that's good news. But can I ask you something--you don't have to answer yourself, you could simply point me to some websites: I believe that Windows source code is "closed"; ie only authorized MS people have access to it. Same for other proprietary s/w. So how was the code sneaked in? (To include web addresses in your reply, you can "snipurl" them, and type only the variant part.)
Imagine what poor famalies can do with a Computer, the Via C7 is a extreemly low Voltage, so low it can run on a solar panel, plus this windows compatible OS, Linux is too complicated for some one new in computers, but Windows is so easy to use but too unstable and easaly hacked, but if the hacker and programing community make a flawless shell like ReactOS the wolrd can be changed.
DC based power is the product of electrical current and potential . So, it's not just voltage [its also current].
Secondly, why would you want to run the processor off of a solar panel, instead of the computer's power supply, which will require a different power source?
If the ReactOS project succeds, thre could be two versions, the most stable and most complete software equiped version, and the barebone verion(No software), the Paid version colud be pre-installed in low end computers such has the Cheap ass Via C7 2.0Mhz, or the low voltage Celeron, so computers can fall to a price of $250 or even lower, in wich could be bougth by non profit organizations, and poor famalies.
If this OS makes it to the Beta and stable stage, Microsoft is done for, this comunity is based on the Linux technology but using the NT kernel wisely, this could be a version of NT Kernel based OS that can be a rival to Vista and XP, hopely one of the most stable versions.
ReactOS is a nice project, however it's purpose is to develop a free windows-compatible OS (just like Linux was a free Unix-compatible one). However it will not be as successful as Linux. Linux was free and based on the good software, this is free and based on commercial garbage. Sorry :(
i thought its target is to be able to run windows apps??
i mean i totally agree, use linux ^^ but this is very impressive work to look at after all; still its not that much of an alternative; looking forward to the next decades ^^
> yeah its better for linux programs buts its not very
> usefull if you have windows based programs,is it?
If you have no idea what you are speaking about, don't do it... ReactOS cannot run Linux apps, and is designed to be fully windows-compatible. However it's still 0.3.1 version, so not everything works.
This 0.3.0 seems to have same graphic bugs than earlier Windows's had (closing a window -> some parts still remain in the window which was at the background).
"More stable..."? Well... I don't think so. My WinXP works well after 2 years without reinstallation. ReactOS gracefully crashed at first ;) That's a great project but I don't see any need for yet another Windows, registry and dll hell. The design is best left to M$.
we want react os because like linux anyone can use and develop it for free but unlike linux it can run windows applications. if linux could run windows applications it would kill windows.
But from what I've heard about Windows design, maybe it would be a better use of my effort to make fun Linux-only games and try to shift popular software to our side rather than building a new OS to support popular software.
Linux (my main OS) is able to run Windows applications (via WINE, ReactOS also uses WINE code for user-mode stuff) too. The only real edge ROS may have, is Windows device drivers support. I wanted to note that it is a 'mission-impossible' task to make an open clone of Windows, a never-ending catching-up story. Linux is an independent OS (just styled after UNIX) while ROS is doomed to re-implement much of M$ design ideas because Windows compatibility is its core rationale. Good luck, though.
then let linux be competition. ROS's potential would draw in community, hence developers. IT IS NOT TRYING TO BECOME A WINDOWS CLONE!!! that would be impossible.
it is trying to become an operating system anyone could use and modify and make better, just like linux (it is so good now).
"real edge ROS may have, is Windows device drivers support"^-someone
You can't be so smart comparing ReactOS with Knoppix. ReactOS is aming to be a replacement to Windows NT. Knoppix is aming to be a crappy Linux livecd. Linux and NT are NOT the same thing!
haven't tried this one out yet, looks cool and the site says it's supposed to be compatible with Windoze programs? If that's true I may have found something even cooler than Knoppix AND also with live cd support! very cool. Thanks much :)
it crashes like windows xp vista, and 7

Actually anything is better then windows vista or windows 7. :]
windows vista sucks the balls of windows XP/Linux/Solaris/Mac OS's superiority to it. XD

have you even used 7? it runs very well, you would be surprised... I have nothing NEAR a quarter of the minimum requirements to run VI$TA... but I am running windows 7 like xp! I will agree though, macs are better... just don't say windows 7 is bad, K?

i could use linux or something or down grade to shitty old windows 2000 or windows me it seems anything newer then win me runs like crap on my PC D':

well, windows 7.... MAY run o.k on your system, as long as it turns off aero... thats about the only thing... but I would say just stay with XP.... or buy a new computer xD

To all users who do not know, ReactOS is based off of Command Prompt just as Linux is.
FavoriteDesigns 3 years ago
I couldn't say it's "bogus". If ReactOS is flawed in any way, or if the logic behind the whole effort behind it is flawed, I don't think "bogus" would be the word for it.
ReactOS is to create an OS that's utterly compatible with MSWindows, of almost ANY version (which MSWindows itself can't do.)
**Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!**
The effort--I imagine--has both popular and (more importantly) legal blessing because much of the IT landscape is monopolistically dominated by MS.
saffronix 3 years ago
it aims for compatability in the windows NT series only, that is, windows 2000, 2003, XP and Vista. not 98 or 95, if you include that as part of MSWindows.
yujinwu 3 years ago
Thank you for correcting me.
I stand, or sit, happily corrected.

saffronix 3 years ago
it's a new os type , not a unixoid not bsd , not windows based , not solaris or wtf/e
sadly for this the ability to run EXE n'shit is one thing , building a whole os around it , and one that's based on an outdated MS product is seriously bogus

NT is still around, known as XP and Vista. Vienna build 62## is the latest version of windows. it is still based on NT and would be released in a few years time, so NT still has a long time ahead.

OneOfSatansMinions 3 years ago
Well, it is still in development, and I think it will be great OS. It is like a free Windows, but it is not a clone! I cant explain it to you now, anyway, it supports a lot of apps and drivers for Windows, and in future it will probably support everything. I don't think it is some kind of stealing or duplicating, it's simply another OS that supports Windows stuff.

I tried it some months ago on two PCs, it boots but cannot be installed. The live CD version also boots up but freezes the computers. They were a Pentium 4 with 2.66 GHz processor, 1.5 GB of RAM and a Pentium 2 with 128 mb of RAM.

how did you get the internet to work in reactos? i tried it in vmware player and the internet doesnt work which is so lame... if the internet works on reactos then ill redownload vmware player and then get reactos again tell me how to get the internet to work please!
creaturegreeny56 3 years ago
I really don't understand the point of ReactOS. Seeing as it shares a great deal of its code base with Wine, what advantages does it have over Wine? Considering that most people's complains about non-windows OSes revolve around the lack of certain windows-specific programs as opposed to any complaint about the OS itself (not that there aren't any) wouldn't it be better to get windows programs to run on these other OSes? That said, I like ReactOS but more in an academic way than practical.
Ademan 3 years ago
Running compatibility in another OS isn't efficient. It is incredibly slow to run that because it is taking system resources and is like running two OS's at once. Thats why reactos would be the better alternative in the future once it progresses more.
demondog89 3 years ago
That's not true at all, Wine has the (theoretical) overhead equivalent to running Qt applications in Gnome (ie negligible if you've got the memory). Wine DOES NOT replicate the vast majority of win32 functionality, but instead just translates it to the underlying subsystems (the linux/bsd kernel and X11) so what you said about it being like running two OSes at once is just false... There *are* caveats regarding wine's current state, but those are because of convenience, not necessity.
Ademan 3 years ago
No copyrighted code found. Sure Microsoft doesn't want anyone to know that a part of their w2k code was available in the internet. ReactOS project was born when this part was published. So why wouldn't the developers of reactOS use it as a start of their windows like OS?
And the sad part is that nothing radical has changed since reactOS birth.
Maybe I'm wrong (and I hope so), but if I'm right, looks like ReactOS has no future..

If anyone is successfully using React OS; could please post your comment to explain how you find it useful ad is it a realistic potential alternative to Windows.
Gispero 4 years ago
Realistic? No.
Potential? Yes. But it needs a LOT more development. Many kinds of hardware don't work, few programs run well, and it's not extremely stable. If you are looking for an immediate alternative, try Linux. If you want a perfect Windows clone, it may be a few more years.

I'm a bit enthusiastic about this project (even though I have left Windows for real OSes), I wonder if it will be able to use this for i.e. games (which is a reason many people stick with Win), if it can be less bloated than XP and if it can support DX (which I don't know) it has a fair good chance to use as a high-performace OS for gaming (which would be pretty cool)

dunkinbean 4 years ago 2
OK that's good news. But can I ask you something--you don't have to answer yourself, you could simply point me to some websites: I believe that Windows source code is "closed"; ie only authorized MS people have access to it. Same for other proprietary s/w. So how was the code sneaked in? (To include web addresses in your reply, you can "snipurl" them, and type only the variant part.)
saffronaaron 4 years ago
Microsoft licenses the source code of Windows to certain people. All it really takes is someone who has access to it that's willing to give it away.
dunkinbean 4 years ago
ReactOS was coded from scratch you idiot learn how to read, this wasn't taken from microsoft, it was made as a clone from scratch...

BlackHatLinwix 4 years ago
DC based power is the product of electrical current and potential . So, it's not just voltage [its also current].
Secondly, why would you want to run the processor off of a solar panel, instead of the computer's power supply, which will require a different power source?
LLCoolPass 4 years ago
If the ReactOS project succeds, thre could be two versions, the most stable and most complete software equiped version, and the barebone verion(No software), the Paid version colud be pre-installed in low end computers such has the Cheap ass Via C7 2.0Mhz, or the low voltage Celeron, so computers can fall to a price of $250 or even lower, in wich could be bougth by non profit organizations, and poor famalies.
BlackHatLinwix 4 years ago
If this OS makes it to the Beta and stable stage, Microsoft is done for, this comunity is based on the Linux technology but using the NT kernel wisely, this could be a version of NT Kernel based OS that can be a rival to Vista and XP, hopely one of the most stable versions.
BlackHatLinwix 4 years ago
Sorry, it's clear that many people that sees YouTube videos are sensless and that do not read out previous comments.
What stability can be expected from an alpha stage project?
This is an Alpha stage project. Don't you know what an Alpha stage software project means? -Well, check out the Wikipedia.
kokoloupo 4 years ago
Why to create this and not to switch directly to Linux?
-Well, the problem is the adiction created by the 25 years of Microsft 95 per cent of market domination.
And the each time more draconian licensing policies from our Lord Microsoft.
And "old" programs that no longer are compatible with the new Windows versions.
kokoloupo 4 years ago
It is important to know that this project (still is a project) is 10 years old.
It is on a pre-beta (or alpha if you prefer)stage.
It is made by unpaid volunteers. Compared to Microsoft , Apple, Sun and so their budget is ridiculous.
It advances at veeeeeeery slooooooooow speed.
Does not support SATA drives. So you have to use a live CD, an IDE HD or a virtual machine install.

ReactOS is a nice project, however it's purpose is to develop a free windows-compatible OS (just like Linux was a free Unix-compatible one). However it will not be as successful as Linux. Linux was free and based on the good software, this is free and based on commercial garbage. Sorry :(

If you have no idea what you are speaking about, don't do it... ReactOS cannot run Linux apps, and is designed to be fully windows-compatible. However it's still 0.3.1 version, so not everything works.
munk666tlen 5 years ago
use linux. its better.
thesuffering0815 5 years ago
This 0.3.0 seems to have same graphic bugs than earlier Windows's had (closing a window -> some parts still remain in the window which was at the background).
But the project looks promising.

Erfa90 5 years ago
"More stable..."? Well... I don't think so. My WinXP works well after 2 years without reinstallation. ReactOS gracefully crashed at first ;) That's a great project but I don't see any need for yet another Windows, registry and dll hell. The design is best left to M$.
jpkx1984 4 years ago
we want react os because like linux anyone can use and develop it for free but unlike linux it can run windows applications. if linux could run windows applications it would kill windows.

Linux can run a lot of Windows programs through WINE, and it's a lot more mature and stable than Ros at this point.
cyborgtroy 3 years ago
but it can't run everything. Thats what ROS is trying to overcome. Wait and see. Contribute if you can :)

cyborgtroy 3 years ago

myromance123 3 years ago
But from what I've heard about Windows design, maybe it would be a better use of my effort to make fun Linux-only games and try to shift popular software to our side rather than building a new OS to support popular software.
cyborgtroy 3 years ago
Absolutely we need more people to code really cool games for linux to appease all the hardcore gamers who are clinging onto windows.

yujinwu 3 years ago
Linux (my main OS) is able to run Windows applications (via WINE, ReactOS also uses WINE code for user-mode stuff) too. The only real edge ROS may have, is Windows device drivers support. I wanted to note that it is a 'mission-impossible' task to make an open clone of Windows, a never-ending catching-up story. Linux is an independent OS (just styled after UNIX) while ROS is doomed to re-implement much of M$ design ideas because Windows compatibility is its core rationale. Good luck, though.
jpkx1984 3 years ago
then let linux be competition.
^the reason why linux isnt as good as it could be
