  • My dad used to have Eponymous on CD, and he would play this all the time from when I was born to when I was about 6. I hadn't heard this song in more than a decade and had pretty much forgotten it. When I found this video, it instantly came back to me. I miss the classic R.E.M.

  • still have my chronic town t-shirt & montreal 86 or 87? still on my top 10 list

  • In Tuscaloosa during 1984 and 1985. Best concerts I've been to.

  • Bill Berry?

  • 80's Atlanta rock at its best.

  • Where the fuck is Bill!?

  • @paulosham1 I know right!?

  • This is a superb song: oblique, and full of melancholy strangeness.

  • So far for so many hours, this is the only video which is NOt lagging! That's a really good thing!

  • "Your yard is nothing but a fence."

I read somewhere Stipe was doing the ole Burroughs/Gysin cutup to arrive at his lyrics. . .

  • this is very raw rem..you can tell..very pure...not a commercial perfect recording like say...Man on the moon or losing my religion..but they are magical no matter what.

  • gardening at night is another way of saying your squirting your seed up someone's buttocks ;) (seductive winky face)

  • @MrDildoBagginsIII It means having a piss on the roadside at night according to wikipedia... makes way more sense, watering can etc.

  • I remember seeing them at the 9:30 club pre Police tour..when Stipe still had long hair...one of the first bands I sung along with phonetically...an amazing band...and yes I have done gardening at night ;)

  • So bad ass! I love the Stipe snarl, it is so wicked. And they never do too much. From a guitarists perspective this is what I strive for.

  • Where is the pic of Bill Berry? He is just as much a part of R.E.M. as the other three.

  • A higly underrated somg, thanks for uploading this version. Haven't heard it for a long time. Still the special vibe and sound of REM. Epic.

    Awesome band, awesome sound...

  • Does anybody know what happened to REMdave?

  • Ah, the Eponymous version, haven't heard it since I lost that disc a few years back.

  • @khasperg how is it that you always loose your best cds but the mediocre ones stay with you for like ever lol

  • Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry........I am with the Terminator except I say BEST BAND EVER.......From O'fallon, Mo

  • Bill Berry, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe Peter Buck = Awesome Band

  • a wise man speaks

  • Yup-Yup!!!........Saw them at Pomona Valley Auditorium in '85 w/ The Blasters.......AWESOME SHOW!!!

  • Those of us too young (and on the wrong side of the world) to have been there for the beginning of this brilliant band....get so jealous when they read comments like this!!

    Damn damn damn......:)

  • Chronic Town is brilliant

  • This song can't fail, chronic town version or this one. One of the finest songs they've ever played.

  • dang skippy

  • This version is the best by far.

  • Ok, to comment on the track and comments here: Impressionistic is a genius term for JMS vocals through Fables. I got to see them in Lawrence, KS for free for helping the college DJ help them unload in 1982.

The backing is exactly the same on this version as the Chronic Town ep, it is the vocal track that is changed. I also agree completely that the ep version is "wistful" where this one is immediate and desperate. My band always played this song and I hold it in my top 5 of r.e.m. songs.

  • this one's more frantic, the other's more wistful. either way the core song is just gorgeous.

  • Although many other seem to dissagree, this is my favourite version of the song. The backing might not be as immediate, but the voice and lyrics seem more assured and important, rather than ill produced and throw away.

And as an actual gardener,I can really identify with the lyics!.

  • i like these vocals better than the ones they used on the chronic town ep

  • Thank you. Lyrics speak louder than images sometimes.

  • I had a live version of this on an album from a show in France in '84...lost somewhere...it was sublime.

  • If you wanna play it, tuning is (low to high)

    EADGBD

  • This is off their "Eponymous" compilation

Michael thinks this version "squishes the Chronic Town version like a grape"

    Personally, i like both

  • I agree, it's not even close. This version is far superior.

  • I've heard that Stipe wasn't sure about his voice when he originally recorded 'Chronic Town.' That he thought his voice was weak or something, and that's why the vocals are "blurry" on the EP, why he "mumbles." Frankly, I LOVE his impressionistic vocals from those days; they weave a mood that complements the songs, the lyrics and the music. "Gardening" shows that impressionism better than any other REM song. One of the great bands of all time.

  • You are not alone in enjoying this period. Many others including fellow musicians feel the same. The thing I felt that was entirely unique about R.E.M. from this time was that you couldn't understand the lyrics, so we used to make them up ourselves.Sometimes they agreed with, or even surpassed what was actually intended by Michael, and later, he even started to the sing early lyrics as misheard by the fans!.

  • Excellent song

  • good song

  • Love, love, love this gem from REM. Great college days with this wonderful song! Thanks for posting!!!!

  • best R.E.M. song ever!!!!! Get to see them for the 11th time in a couple of months. YYYYEEEEAAAAAHHHH

  • wow- reminds me of being the outcast at school- at least i have always known what good music is.

  • Oh! Whadda song, it's just fun!

  • Me gusta mas esta version ...la voz se escucha mas potente...mas informal y con mas sentimiento.

  • We sure like the dots, don't we?

  • Ah....the good ole days of REM. Takes me back to high school in Atlanta.

  • Thanks for sharing this video, I found it through a search for gardening!

  • I used to mow the grass at night when I lived in Memphis, TN as it would still be 95 degrees and 100% humidity at midnight! It didn't work either...

  • Thanks for posting - Peter Buck deserves props, especially for this song - he should be in the picture.

  • Bill Berry of course...I meant - whoa...step away from the bong.

  • gardening at night

  • one of my favorite R.E.M. songs, thanks dude

  • this isnt the chronic version, but its bloody good

  • Thanks for putting this up. I have been looking for it. I never watch the videos anyway.

  • No problem :)

    REM Rocks!!!

  • I kept up with them definitely until Green and loved it all. I'm not sure about everything after that but every once and a while heard something that was cool. Do you have any more early stuff? Thanks again.

  • I do, but not as videos though, just songs.

  • @heethun666 i agree about putting this up thanks to the doer of it and also i hear you on the never watching the videos me either f___ videos

i don't need em or want em because it messes with what real good songs put in me

this song this album KILLED ME WHEN I HEARD IT WHEN I WAS A KID and STILL DOES

I almost died it was so good and i played that record wow

  • Sorry, I searched everywhere but wasn't able to find the video for this song. I am not sure there is one for this song.

  • There isn't a video for this great track. Only video from the Chronic Town EP is for "Wolves, Lower."

  • I just found Carnival of Sorts from Chronic Town on YouTube.

  • @scorpion1275 Videos are way overrated, if I wanted to watch something would put in a DVD. Post more of the great REM.
