My dad used to have Eponymous on CD, and he would play this all the time from when I was born to when I was about 6. I hadn't heard this song in more than a decade and had pretty much forgotten it. When I found this video, it instantly came back to me. I miss the classic R.E.M.
My April travels with Michael on this sequel to last year’s Time Machine tour carried us from Florida up to Quebec—thirteen shows and 3,800 miles of motorcycling between them. The weather varied from warm and blossoming across Tennessee to a polar wasteland in Ontario
this is very raw rem..you can tell..very pure...not a commercial perfect recording like say...Man on the moon or losing my religion..but they are magical no matter what.
I remember seeing them at the 9:30 club pre Police tour..when Stipe still had long hair...one of the first bands I sung along with phonetically...an amazing band...and yes I have done gardening at night ;)
Those of us too young (and on the wrong side of the world) to have been there for the beginning of this brilliant band....get so jealous when they read comments like this!!
Ok, to comment on the track and comments here: Impressionistic is a genius term for JMS vocals through Fables. I got to see them in Lawrence, KS for free for helping the college DJ help them unload in 1982.
The backing is exactly the same on this version as the Chronic Town ep, it is the vocal track that is changed. I also agree completely that the ep version is "wistful" where this one is immediate and desperate. My band always played this song and I hold it in my top 5 of r.e.m. songs.
Although many other seem to dissagree, this is my favourite version of the song. The backing might not be as immediate, but the voice and lyrics seem more assured and important, rather than ill produced and throw away.
And as an actual gardener,I can really identify with the lyics!.
I've heard that Stipe wasn't sure about his voice when he originally recorded 'Chronic Town.' That he thought his voice was weak or something, and that's why the vocals are "blurry" on the EP, why he "mumbles." Frankly, I LOVE his impressionistic vocals from those days; they weave a mood that complements the songs, the lyrics and the music. "Gardening" shows that impressionism better than any other REM song. One of the great bands of all time.
You are not alone in enjoying this period. Many others including fellow musicians feel the same. The thing I felt that was entirely unique about R.E.M. from this time was that you couldn't understand the lyrics, so we used to make them up ourselves.Sometimes they agreed with, or even surpassed what was actually intended by Michael, and later, he even started to the sing early lyrics as misheard by the fans!.
I kept up with them definitely until Green and loved it all. I'm not sure about everything after that but every once and a while heard something that was cool. Do you have any more early stuff? Thanks again.

"Your yard is nothing but a fence."
I read somewhere Stipe was doing the ole Burroughs/Gysin cutup to arrive at his lyrics. . .

So bad ass! I love the Stipe snarl, it is so wicked. And they never do too much. From a guitarists perspective this is what I strive for.

Where is the pic of Bill Berry? He is just as much a part of R.E.M. as the other three.

This is off their "Eponymous" compilation
Michael thinks this version "squishes the Chronic Town version like a grape"
Personally, i like both

I agree, it's not even close. This version is far superior.
