I'm wanting to teach myself how to hunt fox and coyote. I'm a huge upland bird hunter but i know nothing about rifles. Can someone please let me know if a .17HMR is a good choice for me. I want a rifle thats versatile. I want to be able to target whistle pigs long range but also have enough power to take down a fox/coyote. PLEASE let me know..
@benellishotty i use the 17 hmr although its a killer on coyote and bobcat its in my opinion a lil under caliber for serious pig shooting id suggest as an all around to look into a 7mm-o8 or 22-250 both have factory ammo as low as 50-55 grain available wich is perfect for long range varmint shooting and both carry heavier grain if you want to step up to say bigger pigs or even deer.personaly i use a 22-250 firing 55 grain v max varmint load for coyote, bobcat, and will drop a mid size pig..

Shooting them to protect your livestock is fine but look at the comments? People saying "nice shot" and asking for specifics of the kill etc.. You kill because you enjoy it, quit trying to fool people... protecting your livestock is just an added benefit.
There are so many other ways to ward them off, a simple application of predator urine, better fencing etc... But dont tell me you sit out in a field and blow their heads off then celebrate because you just protected your livestock.

@colinwds17 Fencing is expensive, and urine doesn't solve the problem completely. A bullet per fox is a fairly cheap and effective way to stop them. I'm going to guess you've never shot a pest before.
What did the autopsy show? Bullet performance? What did it weigh? I have a 17 HM2 and curious of it's abilities. I know it's the best squirrel rifle in the history of mankind! Not too much damage if they are farther than 25 yds. Nice vid.

As a poultry farmer foxes are basically my worst enemy, a couple of months ago a fox went inside of a chicken house and instead of just taking one and leaving it killed 27 chickens and it only stopped killing because I turned up. Farming is how I make my living and it can be destroyed by a couple of foxes, that is why I shoot them. So get a reason why we shoot them before you start an argument.
@IKRISH96 Its easy enough to build a proper fence around a chicken coop, I've had chickens all my life and never once has a fox gotten them because we built a secure fence that extends a couple feet underground, however the people next door had killings almost on a monthly basis because the foxes would dig under or even on occasion find a way over the fence. Serial killers can justify their killings if they try hard enough, just because there is an excuse doesn't mean its an open and close case.
@VulpesVulpes111 Although that is a good point, digging a couple of feet all the way around a 30 acre field is a lot easier said than done. Even if you could find the time to do all that labour and get the money to get all of that fencing you would still have issues with gates. You could put fence under them but that wouldn't solve anything as you have the gap at the bottom and you cant put anything that low down to the floor as that would cause problems opening and closing it. it just easier **

Foxes are killed in the thousands every year by farmers in the UK protecting their stock. A fox is a awsome creature to look at but to allow it to run without being controlled would mean that other species would be decimated, the natural food source would run low in the countryside and the fox would start to move into the city. Bottom line is to protect other wildlife, hundreds of ground nesting birds, hares, rabbits, yews and so forth.
@xxcdoxx the number of ANIMALS being killed by foxes has not changed after the ban on hunting, and there is no evidence that foxes are causing any more livestock losses. There are ways to protect your livestock from foxes im afraid.

Shooting them to protect your livestock is fine but look at the comments? People saying "nice shot" and asking for specifics of the kill etc.. You kill because you enjoy it, quit trying to fool people... protecting your livestock is just an added benefit.
There are so many other ways to ward them off, a simple application of predator urine, better fencing etc... But dont tell me you sit out in a field and blow their heads off then celebrate because you just protected your livestock.

As a poultry farmer foxes are basically my worst enemy, a couple of months ago a fox went inside of a chicken house and instead of just taking one and leaving it killed 27 chickens and it only stopped killing because I turned up. Farming is how I make my living and it can be destroyed by a couple of foxes, that is why I shoot them. So get a reason why we shoot them before you start an argument.

@IKRISH96 Its easy enough to build a proper fence around a chicken coop, I've had chickens all my life and never once has a fox gotten them because we built a secure fence that extends a couple feet underground, however the people next door had killings almost on a monthly basis because the foxes would dig under or even on occasion find a way over the fence. Serial killers can justify their killings if they try hard enough, just because there is an excuse doesn't mean its an open and close case.

Even if you could find the time to do all that labour and get the money to get all of that fencing you would still have issues with gates. You could put fence under them but that wouldn't solve anything as you have the gap at the bottom and you cant put anything that low down to the floor as that would cause problems opening and closing it. it just easier **

Foxes are killed in the thousands every year by farmers in the UK protecting their stock. A fox is a awsome creature to look at but to allow it to run without being controlled would mean that other species would be decimated, the natural food source would run low in the countryside and the fox would start to move into the city. Bottom line is to protect other wildlife, hundreds of ground nesting birds, hares, rabbits, yews and so forth.

Y do people watch these vids if they don't like killing. Depending on the area you live in the fox coyote and bobcat have no natural predators. So there is no danger in hunting them. Foxes eating new born lambs is what they do. Foxes are indigenous and are at a natural level. Sheep are not.
