It's like killing someone for stealing something from you valued at $1. Give him a weekend of community service. The ones who downloaded it are responsible for the so called theft. Even then if they only downloaded a $1 song, their punishment should reflect that. If you stole a $1 as a 1st offense you probably wouldn't even get jail time.
@pb19111 It does not matter how much you steal, you are committing a crime, and that means fines and jailtime. The same goes with filesharing. If you upload something that is not yours, you are subjected to prosecution by law. And it was not just one song, it was multiple.

How is LimeWire a bad thing, when artists still won zillions of dollars when it was still working? They still sold CD ALBUMS. Music stores still sell them, maybe because they do get sold. Besides, artists get their FAME from file-sharing, and they can get money from concerts, interviews on TV shows or whatever, selling their own brands... Money rains over them all the time!

I hate downloading music the quality sucks!!!!! itunes is the best, the music is at a lossless but with the size file of an mp3. Original CD's sound the best
I used to be in a band, and we sold CD's for 1 dollar, only because that was around what the CD cost us. We knew to get people to go to our shows, we needed to spread our music so people would come out to shows. If i dont know what is on a CD, then i'm not going to spend 30-40 dollars on a ticket to see a band/artist perform because i wont be able to afford it after i dropping 10-13 dollars on an album.

i don't remember who i replied to but they said that it should be illegal to take a song that you paid for and copy it multiple times. I said then microsoft should be the ones sued for making the copy option.
I don't think it should be illegal. You can rip a cd then give it to your friends to rip but they won't sue you over that. The friends can then give the file to their friends via aim and that could just keep happening and that is called sharing. This is essentially the same thing made easier.
I've bought DVDs and CD sountracks at Wal Mart and Target, after paying to see a movie in the theater. I don't own the rights to distribution, but I see YouTube videos with nice sountracks.

Let's say I took a video game. Let's say a popular one, like COD4 for X360. Well, I can take that disc and prestige twice. Then I get bored. Instead of selling it, I give it to a friend. They play the game til they don't want it, and give it to another friend. They are just borrowing something that has been payed for at one point in time.
Take music for instance. I get a song off of Rhapsody. I get the file, put it on my USB drive, go to all my friends houses and add the song to their MP3 player. Is that illegal? Still, no. It's borrowing. And it gets payed for at one point in time!
You may call it borrowing, but remember, you only pay for ONE copy of the game/song. Then lets say you want to share it with 5 friends. You create 5 copies of the game/song which you share with your friends. You then have 6 copies and only payed for 1. It's kind of like buying 1 car and just take (steal) 5 more, and your argument for doing so is "I bought one".
Cars are very, very different from songs, and even games. Cars are a physical object, whereas music and games are just bits of data, no more real and tangible than ideas and dreams. FYI, you don't pay record companies and recording artists for the disc, you pay for the data on the disc. Now, why should someone pay for ideas multiple times, when one person could think it and share their thoughts with others.
FYI, ideas are in your head. music and games take hard work and money to create and manufacture. there are also laws which protect "intellectual property" which an idea is. Cars are made by machines at an assembly plant. music and games require an intelligent design. if people didn't get paid for their music and games that they make we wouldn't have any becuase they wouldn't release them to the public just to "share"

Direct downloads are when you download off like megaupload or w/e site for that matter and the bandwidth being used is hosted by a company.

I used to be in a band, and we sold CD's for 1 dollar, only because that was around what the CD cost us. We knew to get people to go to our shows, we needed to spread our music so people would come out to shows. If i dont know what is on a CD, then i'm not going to spend 30-40 dollars on a ticket to see a band/artist perform because i wont be able to afford it after i dropping 10-13 dollars on an album.

You may call it borrowing, but remember, you only pay for ONE copy of the game/song. Then lets say you want to share it with 5 friends. You create 5 copies of the game/song which you share with your friends. You then have 6 copies and only payed for 1. It's kind of like buying 1 car and just take (steal) 5 more, and your argument for doing so is "I bought one".

FYI, you don't pay record companies and recording artists for the disc, you pay for the data on the disc. I speculate that if the music and movie industries were to eradicate file sharing completely, they would actually be cutting their own throats. Because let's face it, some of these illegal downloaders do not actually have the money to spend on what they download. i goto a thing called a library every once in a while, and nobody seems upset at me reading books i (gasp) didnt pay for! i listened to music on a radio i never paid for (oh noes!) B4 the interwebz i watched a barbaric device (TV) and never paid a penny, peso, yen, or, pound. we win!

yeah, might as well instead turn the internet it a community library, pay taxes for it yes, but make it available to everyone, so those who could only afford $10 a month for dial-up still pay only that $10 a month but they get like dsl/cable and have unlimited downloads and stuff, that would be much better for the economy in the long run

OH MY GOD! I am so scared! Big brother is going to get me! I have not paid for a DVD, game, or CD in over 7 years. And I plan not to pay a single penny for the next 70 years. The piracy will never stop. Countries like Sweden (big respect) are refusing to shut down P2P servers like the Piratebay or give out user information. Go on their site and read the legal threats they get. It's quite amusing. US lawyers think their laws apply in Europe. Hahaha. Fuck them.
