  • Laughing at the Canadian refs.. 6-5 goal is a joke. I'm glad Canada didn't win yesterday against the Russia. Refs were trying to even up the game in the last 10 mins..

  • Greztky to Lemieux will it ever get any better than that on any Team Canada??

  • I wish I was Canadian :(

  • Best hockey I ever watched.....2 GREAT teams, up and down the ice.

  • whats so great here? nice play, but loads of games are won in the last sec

  • No neutral zone trap in this game.

  • There's nothing better than international hockey.

  • Brings tears of joy to my eyes, what a goal! Can't get any better then 66 and 99.

  • @SonOfTamriel It was Dan Kelly's call of Lemieux's Goal that brings tears to my eyes in remembering this game. R.I.P.: Dan Kelly

  • Gretzky interviewed years later:

"I had the puck and saw Murphy and Lemieux open and thought - I'm sure as hell not passing it to Murphy"

    awesome!

  • I remember those games. They were all rigged. Canada had to win, both for economical and political reasons.

  • @ingelaaaaaa haha this coming from a swede, from a country that pretty well wins nothing at all. But when you won in 2006 that was obviously a farce. Your coach must have blown the referee till his head caved in because Finland was obviously better. All sweden is good at is cross country skiing, which no one but sweden and Finland cares about lol. Get out of here Bjorn and go comb your bald spot

  • Why in hell was this game played in Hamilton of all places?? What a bonner.

  • @Magenta408 It was a new arena at the time and they booked the tournament. What's wrong with Hamilton??

  • mario lemieux's goal just gives goosebumps every time people watch it

  • @3:19

The thing most people don't notice about this goal is that Hawerchuk interfered with the Russian D-man. That's what gave Lemieux so much time to shoot. =)

    @3:19

  • Coharski=magic

  • 25 peoples watch this vid and was russian ! haha

  • like this if you fucking love being canadian !

  • I was lucky enough to have a press pass for all the games. What an amazing experience! I'll never forget one of the early games. Lemieux scored 4 goals but Can got clobbered by Russia. At the press conference after no one asked Mario any questions! He sat in silence, then left. I couldn't believe it. I was a cub reporter for my university paper and sat at the back, hockey reporters from around the world packed up front. "Mario, what was it like to score 4 goals against the Russians and lose?"

  • Hamilton will only be another home game for the Leafs, but look at Wayne, at 2:37, if you stop and freeze frame, he's the only that took just one little stop back, then he skates his off into the play, Wayne, that's Wayne at his best

  • lemieux, messier and gretzky on the same team. holy santa claus shit that is some crazy good fowards.

  • It's a real shame that we had a player cheat and hook the Russian player #27 to the ice to prevent him from helping on the backcheck. After all these years of thinking it was one of Canada's best moments, I see it's tainted by lack of honor, yet again.

  • @Lyserge i see what ya mean, he disappears outta the shot. naughty naughty.

  • I look back on this 24 years later and cant help but think they are awful defensive games.

  • all hall of famers

  • this was special for me because the announcer was dan kelly, the finest play-by-play commentator i had the pleasure of listening to.

  • 11 goals in a 3 game series. Sick

  • @almo8989 Exactly ..Lemieux, Gretzky, Messier, Anderson, Murphy, Coffey, Hawerchuk ...etc. Now that is an outrageous and so much sicker. The greatest hockey team ever assemble.

  • any else notice this was the year crosby was born?

  • go u.s.a

  • i think mario lemieux is awsome

  • Remember these three matches. 5:6, 6:5, 6:5... Nothing to add...

By the way , hook stick 3:19... May be this gay ( 27 (?) ) could be in time with Lemieux...

  • G.O.A.T

  • Without a doubt, three of the greatest hockey games I have ever watched in my life...

  • 1972, 1987, 2002 and 2010 --- the defining moments in Canadian Hockey

  • How good was team Canada in '87? Consider that Steve Yzerman, Cam Neely and Patrick Roy couldn't make the team.

  • @leafyutube Actually, I was reading "Gretzky to Lemieux" and some of those omissions (including Scott Stevens) was because Keenan wanted some toughness so he brought in some of his Philly players (the team he was coaching then). He even assigned Tocchet to be Gretzky's roommate.

That said, it was a very talented team (I think 1976 Canada Cup is probably still the most talented). They had way too many natural centers: Gretz, Lemiuex, Messier, Hawerchuk, etc, and not enough wingers.

  • @leafyutube Each at the age of 22...

  • I remember watching this live. I think our house nearly collapsed. lol

  • I was 10 at the time and really into hockey already...I saw this live and I still remember how I felt...Wow!

  • I remember watching (and taping on VHS) this game LIVE on the now-defunct BCTV (CHAN-TV channel 8, Vancouver, BC RIP) here in Port Townsend, Washington (yes, a border state!!!) in August 1987 just a month after moving up from L.A., and yes, I was cheering on Team Canada against those Evil Red Meanies, and everytime I hear the late great Dan Kelly (RIP) call this game I get the very same chills as I did back then, and later in October 1987 I went into my first full season of watching HNIC on CBC.

  • Saw an interview with Larry Murphy once. He said that Gretzky told him after the game that he saw him on the right side but there wasn't a chance in hell that he was getting the puck, it WAS going to Mario. LOL!!

  • @RadioFreeCanada1

Not the Murphy interview here, but Gretzky expresses the same sentiment: watch?v=oewlQSIUEWI&NR=1

  • if grant fuhr played for winnipeg and not edmonton, nobody would remember him. he sucked

  • @playadominical You just didnt like him because he was a no good nigger it has nothing to do with his goaltending skills

  • Reaction of Soviet coach at 4:05 I thought was a very interesting and telling difference between Western and Soviet mentalities.

  • I FUCKING WISH THEEY BRING BACK THAT CANADA CUP...TO PISS OFF THOSE LAZY CRYING RUSSIANS

  • If you watch closely, Hawerchuck totally hooks a Soviet skater who was backchecking on Lemieux. Call it interference, call it hooking, whatever, but he totally takes a player out nowhere near the puck. That guy would have had Lemieux covered. Instead, he's left wide open. Ref standing right there doesn't call a thing. I see the NHL and Canuck officiating hasn't changed in over 30 years...

  • @acrobat471 Im canadian and i always noticed that play

  • ya just like the 13 penalties called against Canada in the Womens gold game back in 02. American soil and an American Referee. BTW Canada still won.

  • @ 2:46 such a cheap shot on Murphy after the goal!

    soviet garbage!

  • Comment removed

  • cant imagine if those 2 played together in the nhl

  • Canucks screw Ruskies ..oh man , so fun to watch

  • There is no one else I want talking that wrist shot in close other than Mario Lemieux, and there is no one else I want passing that puck to Lemieux then a focused, heads up Wayne Gretzky.

    Perfect play.

  • the day Lemieux wasnt a fucking frog but a true Canadian hero!!!

    Bullshit...

  • @ddboris sad to see it still has racists people like you...

  • @math2989 its ironie idiot,l'm one of those frog....

  • What do you do? What do you do when those two are bearing down on you? What CAN you do!?

    Nothing!

  • I still get goosebumps whenever I see this. The best series ever and all for National pride and not money.

  • Get this...The Russians whenever they played Mario Lemieux with Team Canada were 0-3! 86 Worlds, 87 Canada Cup, 04 World Cup.

  • nothing was special about that play rofl 0.o except the timing i mean thats not exactly displaying the skill they both had

  • @kewlnsimpguy It's not a display of their skill? How about that was the last goal of their combined 39 points in just 9 games?

  • @kewlnsimpguy

I disagree. They made the play look easy because their talent level was so great.

  • 6:5 IS NOT MAGIK..ITS WORK

  • Can you imagine if the NHL had allowed their players to participate while Gretzky and Lemieux were in their prime? That would have meant four more gold medals for Canada in the 80s and 90s!!!!!

  • The NHL could very well use and need Hamilton and I say they need the great town, I support you folks in Steeltown from a friend in Winnipeg. Cops colliseum all the way!

  • This is how wars should be fought.

  • 3:00. This is what Gary Bettman doesn't understand about hockey in Canada. You notice there are no lasers, lights or stupid advertising. Just pure emotion. Good hockey will get people in the rinks. Not the rubbish you see in todays rinks with 15+ teams full of ECHL Calibre hockey players. Fuck Bettman.

  • Here's Lemieux poking it to center, Lemieux ahead to Gretzky, has Murphy with him on a 2 on 1, to Lemieux, in on goal. He shoots, he SCORES!!!!! MARIO LEMIEUX!!!!! With 1:26 remaining.

  • @RigaFraction Pure magic!!!

  • @RigaFraction There were three of the greatest centres ever to play the game on the ice for Canada, Gretzky, Lemieux and Hawerchuk. Hawerchuk never gets any credit but he was in the faceoff circle because he was the best draw man and he proved it. Hawerchuk was just unfortunate that he had to play his entire career in the shadow of Gretzky. Three great players = one of Canada's best moments in hockey.

  • 21 people are communist

  • 21 Commies have seen this video

  • Murphy woulda had a tap in lol.

  • you know what Lemiux means "The BEST!"

  • WHO, THE FUCK, DISLIKED THIS VIDEO

  • @11matt1 communists lol

  • @dman7441 Little fucks lol

  • @11matt1 probably russians lol!

  • This is the humiliation Vylacheslav Bikov talked about the 2 on on defending lemieux while he fell which gave lemieux the chance to shoot

  • @okpapereat no one would have stopped Lemieux and Gretzky from winning this series for Canada. The greatest duo that ever played together. The Soviets had been training for this for years and Canada threw a team together in a few hours to beat them. All we need is one practice to beat the Russians

  • @juzu4me Vyacheslav was a great defencemen and who knows if he havn't fall there it might be different t might be the same, he might of blocked the shot but who knows and i think its great that team canada won but soviets are good they have shown in all the games vs team canada. To me you can be the looser and still considered to be a good team just look at philadelphia this year, can you say they sucked because they lost?

  • @okpapereat No, you are right there.

  • @okpapereat who are you kidding russians dont block shots. except volchenkov he's a defencive machine

  • @darthman44 Guess you have not heard of Gennady Tsygankov

  • canadian hockey players> can't even argue. they have the heart, drive, skill and grit

  • This was one of the great series of all time, and Canada 87 was maybe the greatest collection of players ever

  • Haha I got pretty excited when I heard Dale Hawerchucks name. Turns out he won the face off that set up this goal! Such an under rated forward from that era.

  • not even gandalf the white could summon that kind of magic!

  • Bugagaga. You are talking me about Lemieux + Gretzky = Magic? Seriously? What about the greatest man on the ice, Koharski? Vancouver 2010 - I understand you were much more better. Here, even the winning goal was scored after 2!!!!! faults. Or you are so crippled that you proud of such a "victory"?

  • wow..

  • Ahaha even communism couldn't stop Lemieux. Great one

  • So much Bias refereeing for Canada. They got away with hooking, holding, tripping, you name it. Soviets were called for the most ridiculous penalties. If it was a neutral referee, the games wouldn't be even close as Soviets would crush them. Canadians know that, but won't admit it.

  • @nsoshnikov Refs called the same things on Canadians also ;). maybe not this game, but many other games. Canada - Soviets were always very dirty games on both sides. You sir don't know anything about those years (I know it because I was lucky enough to have my father record all canada - soviet games). Go see 72, tell me just Canada was dirty that series. Exactly. Stop talking.

  • @nsoshnikov We have a saying in Canada for this situations. Blow it out your ass.

  • @nsoshnikov Ruskies are a bunch of no heart sissy's and they are lazy and you don't have as much talent as Canadian players your not as tough your not a hungry and you have no fucking heart you fucks fold up shop every time the big game is on the line. And if you don't think we are the best at hockey tell it to our GOLD MEDAL

  • @conda420 you are one stupid fool russia as more gold the canada,in this game we only beat them by one goal.

  • @MrRob7004 only reason they have more gold is because they always had THEIR best on the ice. Our players were in the NHL. 1998 was the first olympics where we had our best on the ice. This olympics we creamed them. Their teams also played together all year round.

  • @nsoshnikov

That isn't true. It went both ways in the series. CAnada was too strong. With Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. IF they had the time to play together and get use to eatchother there would be nothing on the Soviet Side to even come close to that. Seriously, those are the two greatest hockey players bar-none.

  • @nsoshnikov Don't be silly.

  • you can see the hooking at 3:20 . Unfair goal ...

  • @jussa94 yes

  • lol maybe one day it could be crosby and ovechkin

  • @slash3444 srry guys i meant on the eastorn all stars

  • Alan Eagleson that fuckin crook! I forgot how he was still right in there trying to pretend he was one of them!

  • The best ever team Canada ever

There will be never such a great team as it was in 1987. I still remember this game in 1987. I was only 12, but still this team is in my heart.

  • @aaaaa895 That's cause you weren't around for 1972 OR 1976. You'd know there were better teams.

  • @mitts61

yea, but my dad have seen it and he said that canada as well was much better team in 87 than in 70s

  • @aaaaa895 Well your dad is wrong. That's ok.

  • @mitts61

maybe, but i have not lived in 60s and was only born 1975, so i could judge what i saw in 80s. but my dad saw it in 60s, 70s and 80s, so maybe he liked more the team canada in 80s.

  • no afence to russians but there but ugly

  • canada is the best in hockey!!! end of story i wish some of my fellow americans would wake the fuck up and realize this and stop denying it! dont worry nigger we always have football

  • Almost always, the best Team Canada beats the best Team Russia. The 1981 Canada Cup was an exception. Canada has better skill, better grit, better goaltending, better coaching, better team cohesion, better heart.

  • as a Russian born in 1985 my family moved to the USA in 1989

i dont think russians are bad it was just our government was in SHAMBLES!

i mean women got raped in open public streets!

  • I LOVE the intro theme!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lets see who is gonna cry at next Olympics at Sochi... cya there.

  • @GoldWolf30 And just for added insult, Russia is going ot get bitch slapped in Sochi 2014. The Canadian Olympic squad for 2014 is going to be the most dynamic, fastest, 2-way roster in Canadian Hockey History. Duchene, Stamkos, Crosby, Myers, Doughty, E. Kane, Hall, Seguin, Keith, Seabrook are going to embarrass Russia once again. Chokevechkin will show his true colors as usual.

  • 3:17-3:23 one of the soviets gets hooked and that guy was going to cover Lemieux

  • Lemieux + Gretzky = God of hockey

  • 4:36 CROOK

  • RIP: Dan Kelly. There will never be a better Hockey Play-by-Play Man!

Thank you for uploading the Dan Kelly version of this game. To me, it was the announcing of Dan Kelly that made this game more memorable, especially the call on the Lemieux Goal you have just seen. That call was Classic, and I still go to tears everytime I hear this call. Especially when I heard this on ESPN.

In fact, when Dan Kelly died back in 1989, ESPN played his call on this goal in memorance of him.

  • @Jiltedin2007 they still play it in commercials

  • @karatekween33 Oh, you're kidding me! When and where?!

  • @Jiltedin2007 it's on the NHL network all the time!

  • @karatekween33 O.K.

  • Sports were so much better in the 80's. May i say that it was probably Canada's best team the 1987 one.

  • @sakusia 87 was definatley the best team. but also Soviets best team too.

  • Even Communism couldn't stop Lemieux

  • @stevewags13, LOL.

  • @stevewags13

in soviet russia, lemieux is better than you!

  • @stevewags13 Stupid comment... so typical for someone who doesn´t know anything.... Can you see the difference between hockey and political?

  • Damn this goal and Crosby's are the most memorable for Canada

    (H) Canada Rulez

  • russia didnt get anywhere in 06 nor 2010.... packer inn goldwolf...

  • Nice hooking at 3:18 hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • Canada pretty much always comes through when it counts. They play like a team even though its a team of all stars. Canada is unmatched in combining heart, soul and talent.

  • Lemieux and Orr were nicer to watch than Gretzky, but 99 was the smartest player ever. He used his head like no other. He had a 6ht sense out there and that is what made him the greatest. Bossy was my man though. The ultimate sniper!

  • I love this video and loved that serie s--- for my money, the best hockey I have ever seen...... The only time that the Canadians seemed to play like a REAL team.....

  • if Lemieux loved hockey the same amount Gretzky did, there would be no debate as to who was better. Lemieux didn't work out. Gretzky worked out relentlessly. Pure talent wise, no one ever compared to Mario. Gretz was just more passionate about the game and took a far more professional approach to the game.

  • @mroy88: don't agree

gretzky had just as much talent as mario but wasnt as strong nor did he have the reach mario had but he (wayne) has the best hockey sense ever.

  • the judging was a joke in this series. canadians got away with murder in terms of holding, tripping etc..very unfair refeering (obviously canadians wont agree..but its obvious for us neutral fans). this happened in every canada cup tournament.

canada had an amazing team(!) but with correct judging the soviet union would have won.

that being said..what would happened if the canadians had the chance to play together as much as the russian team?

    insane talent on both teams.

  • @lordraven1980

No. Every single game close, every single game decided by a split second. These were two of the most closely matched teams of all time. I could not believe how good the hockey was. Don't diminish the accomplishment of either team in that series. It's one reason why I, unlike most Canadians, will always prefer to watch a Canada-Russia game over a Canada-US game. Such great memories, and hopes they will be repeated. The gold game in 2010 came closest. Excellent game.

  • @wilmanric1

every game was close for sure, two great teams but there is absolutely no doubt that the canadians got away with alot of holdining and tripping etc (partly because of different standards between NHL and international hockey but also due to the home advantage). i realize that canadians wont like this comment but thats how it is.

  • Alexander Semak also scored the OT winner in game 1. He was a pain in the ass.

  • This is what hockey is all about. While i love the Olympic "Best vs. Best" format, I think they should just go back to the old Canada/World Cup format and leave the Olympic tournament to the national teams. Olympics are about competition, and seriously, there isn't much of a chance for teams like Belarus, Germany and Norway when they have to play the 6 best teams in the world...although upsets do happen.

  • Does any one know the name of the player on the russain team that got hooked? was it Peecov or something like that?

  • lmaooooo 3:20 epic ninja hooking

  • Murphy was wide open too. o_o

  • if you go over the video of many of the other goals you will see canada infracted alot and was not called. In 72 bobby clark broke the leg of Harlamov there best player.

that is why this Sir Sids stands above all and was better competition. Crosby will be the best of all time. His body is built stronger than all the others as well.

  • :D:D

  • Orr still the best ever! I have seen them all and noone holds a candle to number 4.

  • thats a question that depends on which generation you are from.

in terms of stats,,gretzky is the best, lemieux was amazing but had alot of injuries, orr was incredible...but there are also a soviet/russian players who where amazing : firsov, kharlamov etc...

personally my vote goes to gretzky, he had that sixth sense on the ice, more than anyone else has had.

  • 66 was the best...ever

  • @thomasmoonman think you better turn that 66 upside down! 99 was the best ever... although 87 is quickly catching up!

  • you know I was at this game in the stands when I was 13 with my brother..i've seen this goal a million times on replay but never noticed the Hawerchuk hook!! Wow..let's be honest that should have been a penalty and if he was tripped up he would have caught up to Lemieux but destiny has a funny way of playing out. GO CANADA GO!!! I'm torn now as to which goal was bigger..this or Sid the kid's today.

  • deff an interferance penalty

  • wow

i was only 12 years old when i saw this game in 1987. it was truly a legendary team (i.e. canada).

  • I love the Canadian team but look at what Hawerchuk (I think) did to the Russian player at 3:20 on the right side of your screen...

  • love hawerchuk winning the draw, go jets go!!!

  • that was a penalty...poor russians got ripped off. canada and russia in vancouver today. karma?

  • i dont think there was anyone in that arena that was looking at Hawerchuk hooking the Russian.

They were all looking at Gretzky and lemieux behind him

  • i dont believe there was a penalty .. and besides .. there are always calls that are never called .. i dont think the refs were bias and the best team won ... Canada is the best the was .. the best there is ...and the best to come for a long time .. i wont say ever will be ... but hay .... GO CANADA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i LOVE THIS GAME ... Especially when Canada wins !!! aaahahaha

  • @habtell93: one more time, that's practically never called in international play.

  • @smartalek65 it doesnt matter if its called its still wrong, play clean

  • @habtell93 To put it bluntly, the Soviets were the guiltiest of the guilty in doing the same doggone thing and for once it came back to bite them in the butt. The officials in International play had allowed this sort of thing, and the Soviets took full advantage of this loose enforcement of the rules; this time Team Canada received the benefit. Justice is done, pal.

  • im canadian and i love canada BUT

notice how one of the russians gets tripped when the candians got their goal

  • its called hooking now ,but back then this rule DID NOT EXIST.

  • Once again about the "blown call": the Soviets and the elite international teams did this on a regular basis. The refs were internationally acredited, not NHL. While technically illegal, it's practically never called in international play.

  • maybe that should have been a penalty. Of course it would be hooking and not tripping. But I think he could have been embellishing looking for that call

  • The best team came second, but wow two fantastic teams. Canadian refs, they let the Canadians play their rough hockey, and gave the two teams approx. the same amount of penalty-minutes. The USSR played a very fair hockey, and the Canadians knew they had to break up their play otherwise it would be 1981 again and again and again, but wow the best ice-hockey ever.
