If Jamerson, Clarke, Wooten, Bootsy and all those other bass gods can kill it on 4 strings, 4 is good enough for me. This guy has zero feel and too many strings. he has a far bigger possible range but can do anything interesting with it
He is a good bassist but honestly that guitar is a bit much;yes it's beautiful and amazing looking but all of what I just saw demonstrated could be achieved on a 6 string bass;not too many people play guitars that they cannot grip and that has to do with comfort but also has alot to do with stage performance;I know I would not like to stand and play that thing for an hour it looks pretty and pretty heavy and with that wide neck probably hard to play standing up,seems like a studio only job.
Holy Makrel, you're right! Sounds so awesome....Alot of guys playing 5 plus stringed bass are guitar players playing it like it were a regular guitar. Look around, they're horrible. However, this man seems to understand the harmonic complexities of playering sub bass notes, and anything way above that. It's not a small accomplishment. Man, some people on this site are down right mean!

Re your comment Marlowann - it just strikes me that the decision to conceive of and have built a 12 string bass probably has as much to do with the desire to do something no-one else is doing as it does with artistic reasons. Lets face it its easier to sell something if you're the only one that supplies it. This is not an insult, he's a great player - but I've upset his fans by suggesting this. Understandable I suppose.
I'd assume that a practical motivation such as getting money would require a practical means such as playing a regular bass in a popular band.
Also, since you've noticed that he's a great player, you should also notice that his artistic justification for having such a bass comes as a result of him being a great player.

I might agree with you apart from the fact that the very first paragraph in his website mentions the fact that he's the only player to use this instrument and that the 12 string has a new string tuned to lo B at 15.4 Hz, exclamation mark. It just struck me as being an irrelevence musically speaking and I thought it spoke volumes the fact that he made such a big thing out of it. I mean the fact that you have the capacity for a very very low note - so what? So does a Sousaphone.
If he were making such a big deal out of it, he would have mentioned it in plenty more places on his website than just a sentence of the first paragraph.
The low B string being incredibly low is interesting to many people, including myself. However, he is not merely able to play a very very low note, he is also able to play notes of an extreme range and apply all of them artistically. This is a justification of the amount of publicity he may wish to receive.
I'm with you 'none'. This fish guy is definitely a stalker. He just doesn't get it. I guess we should all just ignore him. He probably never had an original idea in his sorry life. Alright well those are fair points , although I have to say you dont exactly hear a lot of piano music played in those ranges and there are musical reasons for that. Anyway I'm not questioning his talent, I'm just suspicious that part of the motivation for his much vaunted use of the 12 string bass is to mark himself out from others as much as it is for artistic reasons. There's nothing wrong with that either I guess -
Don't be so suspicious. Just enjoy the music. I have met him, and I can tell you, he is an amazing, warm person and very humble, and yes, for him it's all about being able to express himself. His motives are just to make and share his music. It's a pity that people like you have to assume the worst - and voice it - without knowing someone.
And a Bosendorfer Imperial grand piano has 97 keys... 8 octaves just like 12 string. No one criticizes someone for playing one of those, although you would have to be loaded to own one, so you don't hear them that much.

He is not a genius, that's it, period. He should be playing the guitar in a pop band, instead of clutching the bass and doing that stuff... not nice. I don't play fretless, I play upright bass, in a jazz trio. I will never be acomplished on Fretless or Carbonne's style, and don't intend to. Besides I don't have to outsmart the guy to tell that he is not a genius like all these people say, and I don't have to outplay him to say that he has bad taste. I just have to listen and study. up yours.

I play upright bass, cello, trumpet and trombone. I don't need to play his instrument to know my way arround music and to know that this guy has baaad taste. What if hte director of the berlin philarmonic said the same thing I did? Would he have to play the bass to have a say on this? This is awful man, as simple as that. I´ve only uploaded a vid of myself playing trumpet, but that's my fourth instrument. smell ya later
ok lifuck, seems like you are god, that your opinion is the best one and that you're always right. I don't give a shit about the "director of the berlin philarmonic" and what he would say or think. thus everyone its taste ok ? get interested in EVERYTHING this guy has done before opening yout mouth
nobody cares if you play upright, cello, trumpet and trombone. Just shut the fuck up and learn to appreciate talented musicians. There aren't many bass players out there that could tackle 11 fretless strings on a bass and play with precise intonation and real musical feel like Carbonne does. GFY
i think its kindof funny how smart and good at music you think you are
you can take your avante guard shit and shove it, this guy is a fantastic player there is no denying that, if you can tell wether or not he is good just because you play 123456765432 instruments doesnt give you the right to say he isnt just because he doesnt like your kind of music, or doesnt only play jazz. maybe you should fin a different way of making everyone thinking your a good musician then leaving nasty comments

Don't compare CARBONNE to Pastorius, Caron, just'cause he plays fretless.
You can be/find yourself while havin'influences.
He doesn't "play guitar on bass" but beautifully expresses himself thru an instrument he UNRANDOMLY chose for its intimate sound& feeling.
I left guitar for acoustic fretless bass as I fell in love with its warm expressive sound
(wasn't frustrated!)
Equal rights for instrument(ist)s,NO supremacy!
We should feel free to play/transcribe any scores without any criticisms

first off to the guy that said waht if the director said the same thing you said...he wouldnt cause he would probly know good music and appreciate this.
and last time i checked im pretty sure this guy has done alot more with music. and has had alot more sucess then you and your jazz trio. so go talk to someone equally close minded as you and leave the rest of us alone.

If this bassist draws this much emotion out of people, he must be brilliant.

why do people consistantly put down people that try to push boundaries in music. Screw the haters.

What?? He sucks! No es un genio... de todos los bajistas que hay en esta tierra... este flaco debería estar tocando la viola en la banda de alguna pelotudita.

I love that song.
Truelly amazing, I hope one day I will be atleast half as good as this man.
Its like poetry on a fretboard.
Amazing how smooth and put together his compositions are. They all flow like a pristine waterfall.
Thats real music.
