  • Do you have a website?

  • This sounds great! My grandma is giving me a dulcimer that was my grandpa's and I'm supposed to be receiving it tomorrow. I was just wondering what a good first song to learn was or if you had any beginner tips!

  • Beautiful! Too long my dulcimer has been sitting unstringed. Thanks so much

    Aloha! Noel

  • lovely!!!! :)

  • That was incredibly beautiful - I can only hope to get to that point in my playing! I love the dulcimer!

  • Beautiful beyond words

  • That was simply wonderful. I am trying to lear that song as well on my mt dulcimer from tab and cd by Tull Glazener. You are very very good. Your pings are perfect.

I cannot get that tech yet. Your style, your smile, was natural, relaxing. I see you play the guitar. Isn't the dulcimer far better? I just joined you tube 2 days ago. Check me out.

  • Lovely rendition..do you have sheet music for your arrangement?

    Thanks!

  • That was beautiful and inspires me to continue to learn how to play the dulcimer - I can only hope to be able to play like that some day!!

  • Wonderfully done, at so many levels! Thanks!

  • great.

  • Is there any way you can make a how to video? This is my Mom's favorite song and I would love to surprise her by playing it for her birthday.

  • Tull Glazener has a different arrangment on one of his instructional CDs. Check out his website for the details.

  • Well done.

    Thanks for sharing.

    God bless you.

    Brother Don

  • That was awesome. I would love a 6-string. Where are you?

  • I just saw another video of this guy and he said "coming from the Capote Hills in Texas".

    Hope that helps.

  • oh my!! of all the dulcimer videos I have seen, I love you best.

  • Thank you that was beautiful!

  • After seeing this video, I have 2 new wishes:

    1 Have a dulcimer

2 Have a dulcimer teacher like you

    Nice music Jack! :)

  • I feel the same way. I saw his celtic video and between that and this one, I felt like picking up a string instrument.

I come from accordian, but have never played a string instrument. I would imagine my road to the dulcimer would be difficult, but have seriously considered trying it.

I will be looking for you too. Now that I know who you are. Thank you for the kind words.

    Jack

  • i was killing time reading thru your comments since you reply to most everyone it seems... anyway, earlier comment you said you stayed with DAD tuning, which I try to do... do you use a capo, or do you just transpose everything... mainly wondering because in the part of Tx where you are from folks do some G and A tuned music.....

  • Hey Steve, I do not use a capo. It is sometimes harder to play without a capo but so far I have managed to come up with a way to make it work without one. You are right there are a lot of people who use G and A. Thanks Again for stopping by.

    Jack

  • Sounds really cool. I keep seeing these coming up for sale on craigslist and I couldn't figure out how they were played, which led me to search for mountain dulcimer on youtube, which brought me here. You play it well and it sounds cool! Great job building it, too.

  • Hey antifolkhero,

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look. I hope to begin posting instructional videos for my music soon. Thanks you for all the kind words.

    jack

  • bravo! very beautiful :D this is the first time i hear about this instrument. is it originally from europe?

  • Hello Tacittales,

Yes the dulcimer is a member of the "zither" family of instruments that originated in Europe. What we play here today was developed in the mountains of eastern America and only slightly resembles its European cousin.

    Thanks for asking.

    Jack

  • Do you have tabs of this? I just opened up my dads closet and found his dulcimer and have been playing it for about 6 hours straight today, its a great instrument and this is a great arrangement. Keep it up!

  • Hey Justin,

I am happy that you have discovered the dulcimer. I do not have tab for this one. If you google "everything dulcimer", You will find tons of free stuff to help yo learn to play. Thank you for the kind words.

    Jack

  • wow, such beauty. what are they tuned to?

  • Hey Dan,

Thank you so much. I am tuned to D A D. I have tried to play everything in DAD. I hope to be consistant. I haven,t found anything yet that has forced me to change tunings. I hope this helps.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • Sweet playing Jack - loved it!

  • Hey Will,

Thank you so much. Man you have got a lot going on over at your channel. Thank you for taking the time to stop by.

    Jack

  • What a sweet sound! You built that? It sounds so pure, like a glacial brook burbling off the mountain.

  • Hey Alicia,

The word dulcimer is believed to have originated centuries ago. It was derived, it is thought, from the greek word "dulce" (which means sweet) and the latin word "melos" (which means song). What a beautiful comment and so close to the truth.

    Thank you so much.

    Jack

  • thank you. lovely stuff! john :)

  • Hey Christina,

Thank you so much for leaving such a great comment and a great rating and the compliment. I hope to keep playing.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • I haven't seen a dulcimer in some time. The last time I saw one played, I think the person was strumming and moving his finger on one string while the other two were drone strings. You seem to have a bit more advanced technique then I remember.

  • Hey dmio2, You are right. That is the way most people play. It is also the traditional way of playing. The dulcimer has continued to evolve. That is what I am trying to show here Thanks for noticing and stopping by and commenting. :) :) :)

    Take Care Jack

  • Hello Jack! Thank you so much for visiting and leaving a comment. You seem like a really nice down to earth guy and it's so cool that you build these instruments.

It's wonderful to see something on YouTube that stands apart from all the guitar playing (I'm not putting guitar players down, I play guitar myself:)) So thanks for doing this and I'm subscribing! :) Happy holidays from Scribble:)

  • Hey Scribble,

Wow, what a great comment. Thank you. You are very welcome. Happy holidays to you too.

I subbed you also. Your original music is impressive to say the least.

    Thanks

  • It was fun. thanks, Jack.

  • Thank You. You are very welcome. Thanks for stopping by.

    Jack

  • That is some beautiful playing there. I like the way you pick the strings and play, almost in a glissando. Keep up the good work, and if you ever get out to SC, give me a call... We'll jam!

    Peace,

    White Wolf of SC

  • Thank you. I will do that if I ever get up that way.

    Take care Jack

  • This is beautiful1 I hope one day to play this tune as well as you. I fingerpick my dulcimer in a standing position and you have given some great ideas!

  • powwow Doc,

Thank you for the nice comment. I have difficulty finger picking. I use a pick most of the time. Thank you for stopping by.

    Jack

  • Thank you! Really enjoy this type of music. Is the dulcimer difficult to learn if you have no prior music experience?

  • Hey Jo,

You are very welcome. I am happy that you enjoyed. One of the great things about the dulcimer is that it is the so easy to get started playing. You don't even have to be able to read music. There is a numbering system. Of all the stringed instrument I believe it is the easiest.

    Thank you for asking.

    Jack

  • Very nice arrangement! I wondered what it would sound like on a dulcimer. Now I know! Very nice.

  • Thanks you. I am happy you enjoyed it. I enjoyed making it.

    Jack

  • Yes that was fun!! Thank you sooo much!! And good luck!!! You make beautiful music!!

  • Thank you for stopping by. I am happy you had fun. Thanks also for wishing me luck, I will need it. The dulcimer manufacturing business is a lot like the auto company was in the beginning. There are several hundred builders.

    Thanks Again

    Jack

  • Gorgeous!!

  • Thank You So Much.

    Jack :) :)

  • Lovely tone!!

The tune arrangement really brought it out.

  • Thank you so much. I visited your Channel and I really enjoyed it. :) :)

  • Hi Jack,

Just wanted to say thanks for the videos. I am new to the dulcimer and you have taught me through your postings. In fact, I am working on a new tune based on something I learned from the "Boogei" video. Thanks for the inspiration. If I ever get over the stage fright, I will post it for you can hear. Thanks again!

    Martin

  • Thank you Martin. I feel honored by your comment. I would love to hear what you have composed. I will be watching for your post. Welcome to the world of dulcimers. Thanks again. :):)

    Jack

  • You have a good ear, as well as technique. Self taught, I'll bet.

  • Dear carlbabernathy,

Thank you so much for the positive comment. I have had no formal training. I have had some very patient and talented people help me along the way. I have spent many hours playing. I love music. I was not able to devote any time to it though untill I retired from the military. Thanks Again.

    Jack

  • Uncle Jack

haha patient must of came from being in the Air Force. As i have learned some patient from the Army

    Robert

  • Robert It was great to hear from you. If you stick it out to retirement, you will have to be patient. It's worth it though. Hang in there. When you get a chance, check your e-mail I sent you a message.

    Uncle jack
