Yeah, I wish they'd of made a decent sequel to it. They kinda made a 3D sequel to it called Fade to Black for PS1, but it sucked big time. They shoulda kept it a 2D and I reckon they could of made a winner
@MrChaosmarine There was going to be a sequel on GBA. But it was canceled. All we have is a beta version and as far as I know, you can play every level except for last few.
@MrChaosmarine Yeah, Fade to Black was a poor game. At least there is a nice 1:1 remale of Flashback for the PSP and its a free download too. Search for Flashback / REminiscence for PSP.
Dude, if anybody ever decides to do a remake of Flashback or such, be SURE to make them use your remix. It has all the key elements of the original theme with just enough added to make it sound new enough.
On another note, are there any plans for such a remix of the into theme?
@JunkerKun Wasn't the same developer at all. Another World was basically al the work of one guy, Eric Chahi (with Jean-François Freitas providing the music). Delphine merely published it, and indeed it may have inspired Delphine to go on to make Flashback. Eric Chahi wasn't involved in creating Flashback though.
@gregoryx666 Interestingly, both Flashback and Unreal Tournament used Amiga-style Tracker music.
And if you really want to be a pedant, it's hard not to notice the similarity of Flashback's theme to that of Terminator 2, a very big movie in the year before Flashback was released.
@prowokator: I first played Flashback on the Mega Drive console. Then played Out of This World on the PC, then Flashback on the PC too. It was insane, addictive, one of my all time favorites too.
Man, I had played Flashback back then and I have seen most games past it (which were getting worse and worse) and I have played Fallout 3 now. It DOES touch me the same way Flashback did. The deep plot, freedom, dialogues, everything.
This theme has been stuck in my head for years and I always remembered the horns and snare drum bits... this stuff is deeply programmed into my brain! You can't beat the old games no matter how fancy your graphics are. I feel sorry for anyone who may be into modern games but never experienced the glory days of the Amiga at its peak...
That is a great game. Not was. Nowadays really only few games can hook like old games did. In last 10 years i can only name 3. Crysis and Mirror's Edge... Both are very atmospheric and deep
while I would disagree with Crysis, gotta agree with Mirror's edge. Most original FPS/adventure game this generation? Somehow it boldly reminds me of platforming that was in Flashback only in first person and even more sterile enviroment :)
Back then developers made games that were fun, not ones that just look pretty and have nothing to them.
an example is amiga Prince of Persia. It is 1000 times better than the newer games, even tho the newer ones look better.
Or Unreal. The first Unreal (singleplayer, not UT) is still way better than Gears of War. It has captivating atmosphere, balanced and fun gameplay and a good story, and great music.
Agreed, the Amiga version of Prince of Persia was ground-breaking. That kind of animation had never been seen before in a computer game of any kind. Nowadays it's the same re-hashed stuff: space marines with big Fisher-Price weapons fighting some uninspired enemy; Gears of War, Halo... I don't think that we're seeing the best of games these days.
You're right about Unreal... the first time you see the waterfall, the lighting and the general design of the environment really stand out for me.
@mosquiton001 I think the point of today's most games is the so called "immersion". Makes you feel like you are inside what's going, then let aside some other things.
We used to talk a lot about "realism" on earlier years, and even on that time the same would happen: some of them were more realistic, but not exactly fun.
There is space for a whole article on this topic.
mmm.. still there is a problem on how they make them.. they spend a bunch of money on games wich ends to be not fun at all...
once in a while you can still get the "gripping" effect in recent games (like mass effect, prototype etc) but unlike the older days 95% of modern games still miss that "something"
maybe game developers should take a step back, and spend more time on ideas than "photorealism"
@jedrichards probably i was more easly impressed at that time, but considering the fact that FEW games still hooks me (ie assassins creed, mass effect etc) IMHO means that it's not only my "fault" of being 29 instead of 15 years old, it's due to the fact that game developers forgotten what a "fun" game it's mean to be (just like happens in nowdays Movies wich are 90% all special effects with no interesting or gripping story at all ending to look all the "same") ;)
@mosquiton001 Its an interesting question. I am in the exact same position as you ... I'm 30 now, and still a keen gamer even all these years after I last turned off my A500+ :)
I get hooked on, and really enjoy, lots of new games (Starcraft II, Halo, Mass Effect, Left 4 Dead etc.) ... but they don't grab my imagination like some of the old ones, which are now beautiful, nostalgic memories. I guess IMO I feel like this is 100% my fault for getting old and jaded :P
I'm going to have to go with the Sega CD version actually being my favorite. It's similar to this version, but I like that one a little better. SNES was better, but still sounded too much like the Genesis version.
i loved the Amiga version and SNES versions. they were the only one that had the chimes (or whatever that instrument is that starts when Conrad jumps on the bike).
I played this so many times on PC.
Ahh the memories...
Took me days till I found out you could run and auto-grab ledges by pressing shift...
There was a also bug that caused Conrad to fall through the ledges...

Interesting, why flashback haven't used vector graphic unstead of pixel, like Another World? Even though it's the same author and studio.
