Sometimes peace is only found on the other side of war. We have to have these intimidating, yet graceful, horrific weapons of war to keep the peace or these penny ante dictators will do what they want. I can't believe how people think that we should dessimate our military budget and hope that the world will love us for it and play nice, never happen. We need doomsday weapons to keep the rest of the world in check...Jet noise sound of freedom...
@dvaidr Oh God, here we go again with the "you are mean, evil, nasty Americans" because you have the means to defend yourselves (or exact horrific revenge on your enemies) while "we" are snooty, "evolved", progressive and erudite Euro-trash that no longer view war as a legitimate means of obtaining an objective - BUT only after we spent 2,000 years murdering, pillaging, raping, decimating untold numbers of people across the planet for our own benefit, but now are spineless cowards and weasels!
Top Gun is fitting for the longest serving military aircraft in human history. The B.52 is not slated for retirement until MINIMAL 2040. That would put this fantastic piece of equipment's service life at 80+ years, and that's if congress doesn't push back it's retirement again. The Mechanics that keep these old birds flying are the cream of the crop, have to be to keep them up and running. Nice Video, and I liked the Music.
Tail No 1014 this was an Ellsworth plane in the late 70's, I've been on it lotsa times. I was an EWO on B-52's back then, still remember the tail #'s.
Talk about FUN!!!! I was at Castle AFB(rip) CA, 67-68. Training base for BUFF pilots. My boss would sit at the shop window and watch the "crash and go" landings. He'd write the tail # and what he thought would be wrong wi the landing gear. He was usually right. Nothing like being in the equiptment bay, changing a hyd pack when it's 100 degrees out !!!!!! Loved every minute. Keep the old gals flying guys and ladies.
I was at Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls TX, in about 63 0r 64. I was 4 or 5. Dad was in the 509th OMS (I think it was). I barely remember how dark and scary it was for me to climb that ladder. Probably would have gotten in trouble for it, but that memory will last a lifetime. Dad was VERY proud of these. Almost like they were "his". I'm VERY proud that he had a hand in maintaining these. Awesome plane. Any chance we can get one to EAA before I die????
How to draw a airforce trained know it all out of cover.
The easiest way is to be doing something that involves a aircraft. As soon as a airforce trained know it all sees that, they have to come over and ask. How long you been working on planes. I've done it for 10years. Twisting nuts, servicing hydraulics, mouting an engine, nothing that tough about it unless you have someone trying to add inches to their dick around to tell you your not doing it right.
spent 20 years as an aircraft electrician (2A676) on F-16A/B/C/D and CG aircraft at Nellis AFB, Kunsan AB, Edwards AFB and then E-8C aircraft at Robins AFB where I retired after 20 yrs of active duty service, moved back to Oklahoma and now work at the OC-ALC depot on B-52H aircraft as an aircraft electrician (WG-2892-10). If I was going to lie about something I would have said I was a B-52 pilot.
H models had newer engines, got 17,000 lbs thrust, did not have water injection. I remember this plane's tail #, 1014, used to fly on it when I was an EWO at Ellsworth AFB 30 years ago.
In Vietnam, american lost 2 / 3 of its air fleet. Once they have lost 31 B-52 for 12 days, in operation "Line Becker 2", they started to collect things and run from there.
Can you fit an after burner can on a TF-33 ? Because theB- 52 use to use J-57 turbo jet. Same engine used in F-100 Supersabre but the Saber had an after burner. So I wonder if you had a F-100 could you upgrade it with a TF-33 ? Just curious..
Why do these video's so often need to have a irritating background music added to them?? It interferes with, and spoils the 'music' performed by the B52's own TF33's..!!
b52's do have there own sound when all 8 are up to power, Zoydian where are your uploads? I mixed the b-52 engine noise in the background and used the engine sounds at takeoff,
This video is shot at Tinker AFB, and the majority of the people there are civilians not guardsmen. the guard still wear uniforms.... full time reserve on the other hand, they can wear civi's.
They must be at a civilian airfield...? Who are all the clowns in civies running around.... Or is this the way the NG works...? Which wouldn't at all surprise me.....

refit some of the 'G's" at Davis Monthan to new standards and gt our Air Force back into shape. They can refit them and save mega bucks over a newer craft and still have more bang for the buck.
I was a B-52 gunner until 1991 when they did away with the job. It was one helluva plane to fly on. I have about 1300 total flight time in G&H models.
They are older low bypass turbofans from the early 1960s. Each engine provides alternator power to different systems on the aircraft so battle damage shutdown of one engine should not cause loss of the whole aircraft. The droop of the wings (about 75% of the gross weight of a B-52 is fuel when fully loaded) also means the engine pods sit lower to the ground. Switching to modern high bypass engines would be a major engineering challenge. They are trying better fuels these days, though.
I'd also add that as engine operating temperature rise they produce less thrust. To keep the engine cooler deionized water is injected into the engine. It makes a lot of black "smoke", but it's actually more steam mixed with soot from the burned fuel. At fully loaded weights, weapons/fuel/crew, the plane can weigh as much as 500,000 lbs.
I believe water injection went out with the D models in the early '80s, didn't it? I know the fan engine of the H model doesn't use it...or need it. High engine temp does NOT equal less thrust. Newer engines run hotter...to extract as much energy as possible from fuel. What causes loss of power is a worn out engine....looser tip clearance between turbine and hot gas flow, THAT causes loss of power. FADEC will keep pouring on fuel to get desired power output. Worn out engine.
You know, thinking about it now, I'm really not sure. I know they were using water in the 70's, when I was in the Air Force, and quite honestly I just didn't keep up with changes. ;-) As for loss of thrust, that was a statement made on a B52 training film I saw here on youtube, so, I defer to your expertise.
Water was on the D models and the Gs. This is an H model and never had water injection that I know of. Water provided more thrust by expanding to steam in the area that would have been occupied by an afterburner behind the last turbine wheel there, except you don't want afterburning so far forward near all those fuel tank vents. Water freezes It had to be totally used up or crack the wing skin at altitude. They did sound awesome though , all 8 screaming on water injection. Nothing like it.
@nigelandbozena They're "smokey" only on the ground. Up at operating altitude they're as clean as any civil jet. Besides, airliners don't even use the same type of fuel, and they're not rated to withstand abuse, like AAA fire. Hardly comparable.
I was at Ellsworth in the '80's (jet mech). I got to fly on a Buff one time. They were painted different back then with a lighter green & a white belly. I wish I would of kept track of what tail #'s were there at the time but 1014 sure seems like it might of been there.
I love how that plane has so much neutral lift that it needs a down nose attitude to fly level =) I love our Air Force. We have the coolest toys in the world.
wow! i was at TAFB a few months ago doing a presentation at a child care facility. After watching those men and women at work, i have a whole new respect for our Air Force
When the skins are replaced here at Tinker AFB the aircraft is in a jig, jacked and supported. When the plane is down jacked the skins wrinkle but in flight I believe they are not wrinkeled and when the cabin is pressurized they are not as visible.
This is correct. many people wrongly believe that the wrinkles are from old age, but if they stopped and thought about that, they'd realize that no aircraft would be allowed to fly around with such a defect....not in the United States. In fact, if you look at pictures of the first B-52, you will see the same wrinkles. I once rode in a bomber and you can actually hear the dang skin oil canning during taxi along a bumpy taxiway. ttward is right, when presurized in flight everything smooths out.
My dad was a navigator in a B-52 bomber back in the 80s and 90s. It is quite a bomber. I think it is ranked the number 1 plane on the military channel.
Best plane ever built in my mind. Hopefully the U.S. will keep them in their inventory until 2040 and also doesn't re-engine them. Those TF-33's are very intimidating. You can always tell when one is flying over.
bomber pride all the way my dad was the gunner on the b36 bomber. i whish i was in the air force. evertime i go to barksdale airforce base to the musem i like to see the b52's on the flight line
I served at Carswell in the early 1980's and I love this video too. I'm pretty sure we had this aircraft 1014 at Carswell back then. I served on aircraft 1038, "The .38 Special"
@ttward2: thanks for serving, I work on the buff every day and thanks for everyone who serves our great country
JM: Thanks for your video. Loved it. You guys getting rich out there? The airline stole my pension and basically financially murdered me. I'll be D.O.A. at retirement. I hope you are having a better time than I am. Thanks again for the video.
Yes, Stinker AFB :) That's what my sister called it back when her hubby and she were stationed there 1966-68 She hated Okla. and did everything including threats of DIVORCE to get out as soon as she could,. when her hubby was reassigned to altus, she said NO F ING WAY! You go, and I go home to mummy! He got out to keep her happy :)
I was USAF/SAC 43132 and in Able Chief back in the Eighties. What's up with these guys' clothes? Casual Friday? And no biggie w. 2,3,6, whatever number launching and retrieving - there's the regular guys, new guys, Roam Team, assorted shop and weapons people... our birds had one crew chief, assistant cf and everyone else roamed the line. Nothing like retrieving B52 drag chutes in wind-chill 90-below at about 2am in South Dakota! And heck-yeah - I'd go back in a second!
Wow 6 guys to lauch the jet here at Barkdale it only takes 2 real crew chiefs to launch it. I guess the top once percent must have been lawnmower mechanics haha

Nope, no need to be sorry. You made a very good point my friend. Cheers.
IC2720 2 years ago
@IC2720 no more water injection with the tf33
ttward2 1 year ago
Its a water injection system that is suppose to provide more thrust to the engines.
umahuma4 2 years ago
Water was on the D models and the Gs. This is an H model and never had water injection that I know of. Water provided more thrust by expanding to steam in the area that would have been occupied by an afterburner behind the last turbine wheel there, except you don't want afterburning so far forward near all those fuel tank vents. Water freezes It had to be totally used up or crack the wing skin at altitude. They did sound awesome though , all 8 screaming on water injection. Nothing like it.
JetMechMA 2 years ago
Then whats with the black smoke exhaust? That cant be very fuel effeciant.
umahuma4 2 years ago
@nigelandbozena They're "smokey" only on the ground. Up at operating altitude they're as clean as any civil jet. Besides, airliners don't even use the same type of fuel, and they're not rated to withstand abuse, like AAA fire. Hardly comparable.

I was at Ellsworth in the '80's (jet mech). I got to fly on a Buff one time. They were painted different back then with a lighter green & a white belly. I wish I would of kept track of what tail #'s were there at the time but 1014 sure seems like it might of been there.

Was that at Minot?

I love how that plane has so much neutral lift that it needs a down nose attitude to fly level =) I love our Air Force. We have the coolest toys in the world.
DrumGod22 2 years ago
yep.and the most expensive but still very awesome toys just now every one gets to use the USAF multi million dollar toys

jdbasq 2 years ago
Yeah the B-1 and B-2 but the H models still rule.
TheJomogogo 2 years ago
ya im talking about a whole new bomber and yes the h model RULES
jdbasq 2 years ago
no...i heard that when the Mighty B-52 FINALLY retires its gonna be about 90 years old thats how good it is and how long itll last
BRIANROX1 2 years ago
of course its going to last that long but im hearing that their trying to come up with a new bomber now to slowly replace it.
jdbasq 2 years ago
Anyone know why the fusilage skin is wrinkled?
encinobalboa 2 years ago
When the skins are replaced here at Tinker AFB the aircraft is in a jig, jacked and supported. When the plane is down jacked the skins wrinkle but in flight I believe they are not wrinkeled and when the cabin is pressurized they are not as visible.
ttward2 2 years ago
This is correct. many people wrongly believe that the wrinkles are from old age, but if they stopped and thought about that, they'd realize that no aircraft would be allowed to fly around with such a defect....not in the United States. In fact, if you look at pictures of the first B-52, you will see the same wrinkles. I once rode in a bomber and you can actually hear the dang skin oil canning during taxi along a bumpy taxiway. ttward is right, when presurized in flight everything smooths out.
JetMechMA 2 years ago
The skin also changes in flight when the wings flex, something like 15 feet total, and the fuselage will actually arch some.
IC2720 2 years ago
Anyone know why the fusilage skin is wrinkled? lol anyone know why this jet is still in service

Exelent bomber, but my god it don't half chuck out some crap from those engines...

My dad was a navigator in a B-52 bomber back in the 80s and 90s. It is quite a bomber. I think it is ranked the number 1 plane on the military channel.

most fearious bomber ever built

The B-52 is the ultimate way of telling the enemy "Never bring a knife to a gunfight".

I grew up next to the former Kincheloe Air Force Base. It closed in 1977, but I still remember watching the B-52's fly overhead.

OMG! Love that intro! BUFF shows the squids what a warplane is supposed to be.
atm91771 3 years ago
Best plane ever built in my mind. Hopefully the U.S. will keep them in their inventory until 2040 and also doesn't re-engine them. Those TF-33's are very intimidating. You can always tell when one is flying over.

What an intimidating beast!!!

Reminds me of when I was a kid. We used to watch the B-52's take off at Carswell AFB. Thanks for the memories.
ocsd4065 4 years ago
I served at Carswell in the early 1980's and I love this video too. I'm pretty sure we had this aircraft 1014 at Carswell back then. I served on aircraft 1038, "The .38 Special"

@JetMechMA Thank you for serving, i have worked on all the B-52's from 1960

JM: Thanks for your video. Loved it. You guys getting rich out there? The airline stole my pension and basically financially murdered me. I'll be D.O.A. at retirement. I hope you are having a better time than I am. Thanks again for the video.

You go, and I go home to mummy! He got out to keep her happy :)
Thanks

I was USAF/SAC 43132 and in Able Chief back in the Eighties. What's up with these guys' clothes? Casual Friday? And no biggie w. 2,3,6, whatever number launching and retrieving - there's the regular guys, new guys, Roam Team, assorted shop and weapons people... our birds had one crew chief, assistant cf and everyone else roamed the line. Nothing like retrieving B52 drag chutes in wind-chill 90-below at about 2am in South Dakota! And heck-yeah - I'd go back in a second!
onoididint 4 years ago
Wow 6 guys to lauch the jet here at Barkdale it only takes 2 real crew chiefs to launch it. I guess the top once percent must have been lawnmower mechanics haha
