  • was 5 yrs old and Im damned if I would go to church on sunday without my 6 guns black bart hat and shirt and britches ...trouble could be brewing anywhere any time - the old West!!!

  • bird burton so great on the lead guitar without doin' a 10 minute solo.

  • @jbljedi

"bird burton so great on the lead guitar without doin' a 10 minute solo"

You got to see Byrd play live?

  • thanks so much arkgunslinger just play this over and over like eating a snickers can t take just one bite

  • Simply as good as it gets!

  • I saw these guys in about 1979 at the Ft Pierce, FL amphitheater. Great musicians. We met the bass player, Jeff Davis because his sister was in our Vero Beach class of 1980. Thanks for posting.

  • So happy my dad recommended this. Glad i can appreciate it as well, this is some seriously mellow stuff.

  • @Philter123456789

Your dad (and you ) obviously have good taste in music :D

    Thanks for checking it out.

  • @arkgunslinger Thanks so much for posting this! The slideshow is a fantastic compliment to the ARA song! Do you recall where you found the pic of the cowboy and horse in the snow? I know I've seen it before but so far my Googling and Binging come up empty.

  • @theprisonersix

Sorry I don't remember where I got the pic from. if I get a chance I'll look around for the original but, I think I lost the original images for this video during one of my PC "cleanups"..

I wish I did know the source for it so I could list credits for all the pics. Denny Karchner did the Quigley sketch and was nice enough to give me permission to use it.

  • @arkgunslinger It may be from a commercial but I just can't find it. Maybe I can do a screen grab, print it out and do a pencil sketch/copy. It reminds me of the many times I walked through the cold and snow to work and back in the middle of the night. Always had my western hat to drain the snow and rain but it would pile up on my shoulders. When I got home I'd have to stand outside and shake it all off, LOL! In the meantime what a great song! The ARA were fantastic!

  • great

  • @arkgunslinger Thanks arkgunslinger, makes me want to go spin some Aces right now!! They are simply the best at what they do, or what they did. I love the guitar on this cut, blows me away! Russell could make any heart melt.

  • @Mr427cammer

    :-D

  • This is just the best song ever. Not that it's about my life or anything....

  • You know Billy Byrd, Butch McDade & fireplug Russell Smith is one of the better bands to ever come down the pike... Even after Byrd left and Cameron Duncan picked up. What the dog happened to em? This is the stuff we should be hearing on the radio.

  • Thanks arkgunslinger, this is a killer song. This damn band is killer. And this song gives me a shot of rejuvination in my soul. Thanks again.

  • blueshound, Duncan didn't join until 1977. Tthis is from 1976, and is pure Byrd Burton. What a guitar player.

  • song won a grammy in 1976 , one of the first singles with a phaser on the guitar that I can remember, wish these guys would have stayed together longer, they were great!

  • @dontkr

The Aces are still at it!

The current line up includes Russell Smith on electric/rhythm guitar, The "Fantastic Willie T." (Billy Earheart) on keyboards, Kelvin Holly on lead guitar and backup vocals, Mark Horn on drums, and Lorne Rall on bass

according to their webiste theacesforreal (Click the little button to the LEFT of the view count to see more info)

  • thanks so much for sharing this SONG one of my all time favorites; the guitar player should receive the ultimate award for pickin! hurts so good does life and this tune!

  • jeez I like this tune! Wring it out, Byrd! Nice pics, too, I still love westerns.

I had the album back in the 70's, but somehow didn't pay much attention to this song. Trying to figure it out on the Telecaster now, but my fingers may be too old.

  • Great tune and great pics.

  • @namraj1

    Thanks for checking it out.

    FYI

Denny Karchner was the artist who did the "Quigley" sketch.

A link to his website and more of his awesome western art is in the info section.

  • Love this post!!!! In NC now, but miss beautiful Arkansas!!!! Does Carlisle ring a bell???

  • @baffledoverit

    I miss the Ozark Mountains!

  • one of the best songs ever by one of the most underrated, mismanaged bands of all time. The keyboards and guitar in this song make me melt. Good stuff.

  • This is brilliant!

  • @jfclack

    Thanks

  • These guys sing true Americana - like they like the simple things there is to like about their country especially in the South. And why not it is a great continent and this tune is not half bad either.

  • The Coolest of the "COOL"!

  • Alan Ladd is awesome. I just bought some of his movies from lovingtheclassics. They should arrive to me soon.

I found the site by searchin on google for lovingtheclassics after I saw it in a message board.

  • Thank You So Much...I Have Loved This Forever !!!

  • @epatha44

    Glad you enjoyed it.

  • one of my "desert island" 100 songs...

  • @SammSquamch

    me too!

  • I've been listening to these guys since the 70's. I love pretty much everything of theirs, but this song and 'Dancing the Night Away' are in a category by themselves. Then what about 'Delia's Long Brown Hair' and 'Widow's Hill'? I just realized I could find something special about all their songs, so I'll stop there.

  • These guys are one of the truly greatest underated bands around - exceptional depth of feeling with great musicality

Anyone who has seen them live completely gets it ....

  • Thank you for putting this out there. This has always been one of my very favorite songs and yet when I mentioned The Aces to friends they looked at me like I was from another planet. Good stuff!

  • @Heybonjour

You're welcome. The Aces are still one of my all time favorite bands!

  • this is one of the greatest songs ever.see me do it live on my channel.

  • this is just the stuff that makes a good day better

  • Wow, i remember my father's band playing this song when i was kid.

  • I was lucky enough to see them(in Seattle) at the height of their popularity in the late 70'sand they were awesome...

  • I saw them too at the U of W and the Rainbow tavern. They were friends with the band The Skyboys, and would sit in with them when thay were in town. Duncan Cameron played pedal steel on their album. They were awesome. Duncan quit to be a commercial pilot, came back to play with Sawyer Brown, then went back to flying. He was phenomenal

  • I saw the Flying Burrito Bro. at The Rainbow and the Skyboys opened?

  • One of my favorites from the Aces . Would Love to see them live..

  • Slinger..one of the best videos on YouTube, Do more.

I can' tell which I like more..the perfect lead guitar, or the lilting electronic piano.

This is one of the great songs that lead to today's Country, The sound influence is heard in a hundred bands now.

  • Thanks for the coment, texxmw.

I want to create some new videos but, I've been too busy at work and I had My Emmylou Video silenced by Warner which kind of discoraged me. Maybe soon I 'll fire up Video Studio again!

  • I'd sure like to know what the lead guitar player is using to get that Tele to sound so good. At times I think I hear a fuzz pedal....ah well one a you guys might know......

  • I just never realized how damn good these guys were. Amazing

  • Amazing :-) is quite right!

  • I wonder if Mark Knopher swiped some of those guitar licks? Hmmmm....Dire Straights?

  • Yepper, this is a classic seldom heard tune. We used to cover this tune back in the day...it was a real crowd pleaser..Sing it Russell!

  • One of my all time favorite songs - and the story of my life...

  • Comment removed

  • I have loved this Song!!! and the ARA since i was a kid in the 70s

  • Steve22322 , thanks for stopping by and glad you enjoyed it!

  • Sweet tune that can really grow on you! I came to this version after having listened to Jesse Winchester's cover of it on "Learn To Love It" which is very good, by the way, but I'm starting to lean on the Aces, after all Russell Smith is responsible for the composition. Nice upload arkgunslinger, and thanks to you tube for the space, and to The Amazing Rhythm Aces and the aforementioned Mr. Smith: ROCK ON SHINDIGGERS! P.S. Nice pix to accompany the tuneage!

  • 9erfandex, thanks! I'm just glad the Aces are cool with it too, they embeded it in their MySpace page :)

Check the more info section for their Myspace and the Band's website.

  • I am trying to look for the music where they put it before a fight seane where the cowboys squat there eyes to each other and stuff. I CANT FIND IT ANYYYWWHHHERRREE!

  • Listened to ARA since the 70's. 'Dancing The Night Away' and 'The End Is Not In Sight' are probably my two favorites. Couldn't get them on CD for a long time, so I went without for a few years. Thanks for posting.

  • I love this video. Great Pictures of the West.

  • Thanks, threattgal!

  • Thanx heaps for this, Arkgunslinger. You got anymore AMA from this era that you could put up?

  • Jindy2, I also have "Dancing the Night Away" already posted. Would love to create a few more but, just don't have the time right now, maybe later.

  • I think this is one of the best!I love it! I saw him in concert in Snowmass, Colorado. FANTASTIC!

  • you're welcome, Traillour!

  • Now this is good music....

  • 1990LX, couldn't agree more :)

  • Does anybody knows the name of the Cowboy Tune, with the flute? You know in like every movie, when cowboys are shooting and shit you hear that sound. Thanks!

  • HouseMusicNL do you know a specific movie where the song is used?

  • Hey, guys. Does AMA have a song with these lyrics: "I'll build you a mansion in my mind?" I could swear that a song with those lyrics was on an old cassette I had many (many) years ago. I think it may have been "Aces Live," but I am not certain. Is theres such a song, or am I crazy? =)

  • typo- ARA

  • josmom9407 ,not sure kinda rings a bell though.

  • Ionce lived across the hall from the keyboard player's ex-wife's apt.Her name was Denise Brown Briggs(1968-69)ShelbourneApts at Poplar&Manassas,Memphis,TN Recorded in a building that looked like a castle.Stax Records,I think.I can't remember his name or the other members. They recorded inMuscle Shoals,Alabama for many years.Denise had all kinds of tapes&videos of the AmazingRythmAces &husband&hisBestFriend wouldplay&record some at apt.She hadGirl byHim,Son by his Best Friend, girl by2ndHusband.

  • Irecall hearing something like building a mansion somewhere but I don't know for certain if it wasAmazingRythmAces. However,Denise had craved to have a normal life&a real home.I introduced her to ButchBriggs of whomIdated a few time&they married within the yr.He had a steady job&offered her stability.(Being a travelling musician's wife is a very lonely thing to be)ButchBriggs died of leukemia&she&daughter ended living in Collierville orCordova,TN in what we poorfolks might call aMansion(2cntnu

  • What I meant to get across as tha Denise being a very beautiful young woman back then, her husband or his fellow musician best friend might have put together a song for her about building a future mansion in his mind to build for her someday in reality!

  • To josmom9407 Could it be Tanya Tucker's Delta Dawn? That line is "Could it be he's meeting you here today to take you to his mansion in the sky"!

  • In the 70s I was playing in rock bands. We took a house band job at a joint where they wanted some country. The ARA's came out with this song following their hit Third Rate Romance. I wore out the grooves on both those records figuring out the lead guitar parts. I learned new scales from this and I still use them today! Thanks to this fine band and thanks for posting!

  • mckinnons3 you're welcome and I played bass in a garage band back in the 70s also. The good ole days.

  • thank you, nice job. a lost gem for sure.

  • HerdDotTV, glad you liked it!

  • Nothin' smoother than the Aces.

  • I forgot about this tune. I haven't heard it in over 30 years.

    Thanks for posting it!

  • Thankks EarlSnohomish.

Brings back the memories doesn't it? LOL

  • Wow... really nice job... enjoyed that a lot:)

  • granako thanks for your comment.

  • Great band,love their stuff

  • Chungilla, one of the greatest!

  • I remember seeing them twice back in the 70's. First at Wichita State University. It was so cool to be able to dance to such a tight band. Later, at the Orpheum Theater in Wichita a year or two later. Hated to see the lead guitar player Byrd stop touring with them. I wanted to send the drummer Butch McCabe an email and let him know how much I enjoyed his skill, especially on "Never Been to the Islands", but I understand he died of CA. Thanks so much for posting this.

  • BellanGracie, Lucky you. I saw a lot of good shows back in the 70s but, I've never had the chance to see the Aces live.

  • You guys just aren't easy enough to find.

This San Francisco liberal never gets tired of your sound.

  • sfexpat2000 check the more info for the Ace's website and myspace pages.

  • Hey ark, Do you have "anything you want"? how bout putting it on your request list, LOL!

    signed,

    Miss request...aka the PIA!

  • Is that the Roy Orbison version?

  • No..Theirs...

  • WELL DONE! this is a great tune, no less. A BIG flashback to my schooldays

  • Thank you wasntborntofollow, guess that would make us close to the same age! I have their first album on vinyl.

  • Excellent! Love ARA!!! Good job with the pics.....now....how about finding their version of 'Dancin' the Night Away"? Kudos to you.

  • Thanks dkdelta! You are not the first to ask for "Dancin' the Night Away".

I do have the song(live version) downloaded from iTunes and it's great.

  • The Aces are GREAT! One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums of all times. I saw them at Rockin The Rivers about 5 years ago and they sounded as good as ever.

  • babbchuck, yes I've been a fan from the start. They're still out the making music.

Check the links above and you'll see that one is from their MySpace page where you can get get the latest ACEs news.

  • Sorry - which links?

BTW - the Aces played this song and some others on Saturday Night Live back in...well, a long time ago. I was just lucky enough to be watching the night they played. Maybe there's video out there somewhere of that performance?

  • Look just below the "Views" you should see "Honors 0" and "Links 5" if you click on the "5" it will show you the links where people have embedded my video on their web page. The top 2 links are the Aces MySpace.

Here's the link, just delete the space between the "." & "com"

    myspace. com/theamazingrhythmaces

    enjoy!

  • Duh. Thanks.

I just looked it up: SNL episode 104, May 10, 1980. It says they played "third-rate romace" AND "Who will the next fool be". Funny - I distinctly remember the guitar player ripping it up at the end of "end is not in site". Guess my mind is finally going...

  • "SNL episode 104, May 10, 1980. It says they played "third-rate romace" - babbchuck

Boy I wished someone had that on video!
