Okay, I just started watching this show (this is my first episode and I am watching the series "in order") and I think I figured it out. It's about a high school where the kids have serious mental disorders or problems (asperger, rape victim) and also super powers. It's like Watchman if it was in Japan and high school.

@Wolvenfire86 swing and a miss. at least watch the previous episode. a weird girl starts a club and wants to search for mysteries, be they paranormal or not. usually not. she wants to look for aliens, time travelers, espers, and sliders and have fun with them. turns out, all but a slider(maybe) has joined the club. as nagato said, haruhi suzumiya has a hidden power to warp reality, but it'll be really bad if she finds out. drama, comedy, adventure, and romantic tension occur along the way.

@Vinco Darn. I really liked that theory. I rarely watch the first episodes of any anime that takes place in a school. I find that the series is more interesting if you star in medias res if it is in high school.

Anyway, I have a new theory! Kyon IS special. He is Haruhi's imaginary friend that she invented. That is why she can read his thoughts and knows exactly where he has been.

@Wolvenfire86 he's indeed special, but one thing about this show is that kyon's narration sometimes ambiguously overlaps with what he's actually saying, which happens at times in the light novels. haruhi's not the only one who hears him at times; next to that, she bends reality, so some degree of unintentional omnipotence is a given. in any case, the possibility that he's an extension of her (or her an extension of him) is a popular fan interpretation.
