This DID get played in Chicago,which had a UK streak back then.I CAN'T LET GO by The Hollies(another UK 2)was top 20 here but not even top 40 Billboard.Cilla Black's version of ALFIE was a hit here too.Not only did he peak behind SUNNY AFTERNOON with this,it didn't even MAKE Billboard.Odd.

He never had a solo UK no 1. It may be a surprise that this song achieved the highest chart position for Gene in the UK, jointly with I'm Gonna Be Strong, at no 2. 24 Hours From Tulsa only reached no 5!
He DID reach no 1 in 1989 with Marc Almond, on a duet for Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart.

I was in the UK in the summer of '66 when this was a big hit there. Lucky thing, because I never heard it in the U.S.
