I already have done. :) You can find it over at the FXhome website in the Support section. Go to the 'Effects' category of video tutorials and look for the Get Lost case study.
I just animated the monster on a clip for a test and need to redo it however now that I have opened a new file, I cant find my emitter. Is there a way of calling it back to position or something? I often have trouble when opening it that I cannot open the emitter.
How was the smoke made to look like it was behind the guy's head? Does this program have some sort of layering effect? And what is the name of the smoke effect?
The smoke was put behind the actor using a rotoscoped, animated mask. Rather tedious, but the results were pretty cool! If we did that shot again, we'd shoot the actor against a greenscreen, which would have made it much easier.
Smoke effect doesn't have a name as such, it was a completely custom effect created for Get Lost.
Am I the only one who thinks the grading has been pushed too far and has bled onto the actors and makes them look a little unnatural? or am I missing the point? Is that intentional?
It's a bit of both. It was intentional in most shots, both for the style we were going for and to make them look a bit more 'bronzed', and less like pallid English chaps (and one Yank) that never see the sun. :P
However, there's a few shots on the beach near the start where I would have liked to restrict the grading on their faces. Unfortunately given the time constraints for the grading and effects (I had about 1 week to do it all) it wasn't an option.
Indeed! It's frustrating sometimes, if a deadline rushes things, but I think it came out pretty well considering.
YouTube doesn't help, either, as it makes everything rather smeary - there's a high quality version of this file over at the FXhome website if you're interested.

what program did you use for the smoke monster?
CHERUB47 3 years ago
All the effects and grading, including the smoke monster, were created using FXhome VisionLab Studio.
The only elements that were created in another program were the 3D titles ('Get Lost' etc), which were created in Blender.
fxhome 3 years ago
cheers man
how did you do the smoke monster in VisionLab?
CHERUB47 3 years ago
Hmm...it was a long time ago! It was a carefully animated particle effect, essentially.
I'd recommend checking out the in-depth video tutorial. You can find a link to it in the 'more info' section on the right.

There's no function to 'recall' an emitter. Have you tried zooming out of the canvas?
fxhome 3 years ago
Yeah, nothing. Lets say I open a new movie clip onto it and then drag the particle effect on, how do I get the emitter to show?
CHERUB47 3 years ago
Animated the monster over the clip but now when I merge it with the rest of the footage, the picture size is smaller.

YouTube's not really the best place for technical support: I'd recommend heading over to the FXhome website.

the hatch explosion wasn't Visionlab huh?
nerdsRgay 3 years ago
It was a real explosion, that was then augmented with a lens flare and some grading.

Ah, right, I thought so. Yeah, sometimes you've just got to get it out there. Thanks for letting me know.
