what a great metaphor for how innocent creatures die weather that be for fun and game or natures curse. truly makes you see how that bird can be your friend suffering in need of help and you the little boy could be a saviour to help that injured starling. :)
Excellent song. This is still one of the best songs out there about our responsibility to other beings, and on basic human morality. I put this in a mix with Roger Waters, among others.
Like dandelions this song is based off of a personal experience with reese.
The starling showed up twice.
The first time, obviously he found the bird dead in his yard. He was I believe 6 or 8 years old. And he was so upset about the bird being dead he says it basically traumatizes him.
Later in his life he's playing with bb guns, and shoots a starling as it flies to a nest with babies in the nest. When he hits the bird it's killed instantly. He never told his parents about it and says he remembers over time slowly hearing the baby's chirps getting quieter and quieter.
I really like this song. But i won't speak to much about it. It brings me to tears nearly every time. Due to the fact i think of all the people who i made good friends with, then, over time, or instanly, 'killed'. This helps me remember my past, as so many other people, or dare i insult, humans, forget.
@ArcticFahx real men cry. I cry when God speaks to me, when we cry even as men, God hears our every thought our pains. tears are healing, also. So i guess Reese Roper was called for a greater cause to write amazing music for us all to enjoy. I am 29 and I can tell you what ever you are going through Jesus cares.
In answer to what's being said about the song being literal, I should point out that even though it's a true story, it can still be used as an analogy. Just because it's not completely illustrational doesn't mean it lacks a point.
I do believe this song is using the death of a helpless bird as an analogy to people going to hell. How Christians start out concerned, and then just sort of stop caring and sometimes even purposefully avoid trying to tell people about God.
That's what I think it's about, at least. It's a Christian band so that's what I'm assuming.
Actually, it's about when Reese was a child of about 12 he was using a bb gun and shooting cans with a buddy or cousin of his can't remember which, anyway, the went to shoot birds and only pumped it once so it would barely even graze off them. The gun had an air leak so they had to keep pumping it so it wouldn't lose pressure. It was pumped really hard one time and he shot a starling and killed it.
it is about having a heart for the lost, How Christians start out concerned, and then just sort of stop caring and sometimes even purposefully avoid trying to tell people about God.
how ever im not sure if Reese knew this when he wrote it, but the Spirit has a way of doing things like this.
AWESOME job! I absolutely love this song; it's sad but very true and it reminds you that people are watching us as Christians and we need to tell them about Jesus.
my break down of the song shows that when we are young, we have protection from elders -- we dont have the rigidity to protect ourselves yet so we are empathetic. then, when we are older, we justify killing "harmless game...scare them off". But we always come back and remember our true selves. christians might find this in jesus (being reborn). even though I believe its internal, not external, the meaning is still the same.
It makes me think about how despite how awful the injuries we see are, no matter how much you want to heal them, we still carelessly do the same thing when the idealism and kindness we had in youth fades. Because we guard ourselves from the pain of not being able to help, we ironically wind up causing the very thing made us need to guard ourselves in the first place.
Also, it makes me think of how the innocent suffer for our mistakes just as much as (if not more than) us.
I think on a spiritual level this means as Christians we all have the potential to share with others. When our relationship with Christ is hindered by our attitudes and sin we are unable to share Life with those around us therefore depriving them of Life.
its about how life is really fragile. like a bird that gets its wings hit a little bit then that bird will certainly die and so will all of its babies. sad .
This is a really great song. Roper talks about his inspiration for the story in an interview, and this is basically a story from his childhood. He accidentally killed the bird and the baby birds starved to death. There's more to it and I don't really do much justice to it, but I don't remember where I got the story from.
This song constantly sends goosebumbs up my arms and legs

I think that it doesn't matter, as long as you take something away from the song, that is all that matters.

And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'
from what Carl is saying it seems that Reese might not have been aware of this, but the Holy Spirit is defiantly speaking through his lyrics.

It's about one of the band members killing a bird and feeling bad about it. End of debate. Life can be taken away easily.
