  • lol brilliance!

  • they should just shoot the fukin bird

  • Paranoia Brigade moaning once again i see.

  • Loyalist parrot ha ha

  • the sash is not sectarian

  • @alboy1873 , try being a Catholic in Glasgow in July when 20,000 half pissed knuckle draggers are beltin it out at 'Ra walk' I've seen my fellow citizens put their crucifixes inside thier clothing, I've seen the Religious shop in the High Street and the Celtic store literally covered in spit by these people singing the song. I've seen an old Priest abused and spat on by yobs singing this song. But if you think its OK then I'll take your word for it, lets teach it in schools eh? ffs!

  • @tirnaog09

I think the problem is more with the followers-on than the Orangemen themselves.

It certainly is wrong for people to be abused because of their religion especially as Orangemen celebrate civil and religious liberty for all.

I hope those who spat on the priest were dealt with by the authorities

  • You sound a reasonable and intelligent person. How can an organisation which is defined by its opposition & hatred of Catholicism ever be anything other than sectarian? Too many people have yet to learn that that being pro something doesn't mean you have to be anti something else. As for the Orangemen themselves, I was in the Bristol Bar in Glasgow last July and they were whooping it up as all the 'FTP' stuff was sung. Hardly innocent bystanders? Time to move on from all of this outdated stuff?

  • @tirnaog09

The laws and constitution of the Orange Order states that members must not disrespect anyone on account of their religion.

Its some of the members ,like the ones you witnessed, who make a mockery of this rule which gives the wider institution a bad name.

These members must take a greater pride and interest in the institution they support and only then will they realise the need to be pro and not anti-anything.

  • @cloneoffred Laws mean nothing if they're not obeyed? The Catholic Church recently became the biggest Church in Scotland in terms of average sunday attendance at services. The Order has a real issue in getting members to actually try and be good reformed Christians. Very few of them attend chuch on a regular basis. It is a social and cultural substitute for religious observance for many, it's ties to loyalism and, sadly, anti catholic/Irish sentiment are there for all to see.

  • @tirnaog09

I have never met an Orangeman who hates someone just because they are from Ireland.I have also never met an Orangeman who has hated anyone just because they adhere to the Church of Rome.No doubt others have met some who do.I definitely know many who belt out loyalist songs which are perceived by others to be anti-Irish/Catholic despite there being nothing of the sort in the lyrics.

I do agree with the rest of your statement though

  • @cloneoffred I went to the funeral of an Orangeman recently in Glasgow and it was quite touching to see his brethren line the crematorium in their regalia. About 50% of the turnout were RCs and one said to me, ''its about respect, showing someone you liked that you will mark their passing. Pity he wouldn't have done the same for me even though I've known him 40 years.' That is a real problem, the perception that the order is bigoted when it comes to dealing with Catholicism.

  • @tirnaog09

And therein lies arguably the single biggest gripe of Orangemen relating to their organisation-the fact that attendance at a Catholic mass to pay respects to a dead friend or celebrate a family/friends wedding is barred.

They can attend the funeral/wedding service but must leave once the Mass begins and return when it is finished

Having said that, I know a 2 or 3 who have ignored the ruling over the years with the knowledge of other members without any problems.Good on them

  • Fair play to them but you can see how narrow minded this makes GOLS seem? I was at a funeral in a Catholic Church last year and at least 6 Muslims were there. Its all about respect. A poll for the BBC suggests 66% of O'men want the ban to stay. The same documentary showed sniggering O'men talking about 'canibalism' in the RC Mass! They looked liked reactionary tories at their worst. What would GOLS do if Salmond won his vote to take Scotland out of the Union?

  • @tirnaog09

I'm sure that vote was taken in a private lodge room and not representative of the wider national membership. The cannibalism analogy is not restricted to the OO but it would have been better if these remarks had not been made.I do not recall the Orangemen sniggering either although possibly one or two had a look of disbelief

I have no idea though what an independent Scotland would spell for GOLS but I do know there were Orange societies long before there was a United Kingdom

  • @cloneoffred Well the traditional date for the official foundation of the Order is the Battle of the Diamond in 1795? The UK, one could argue, was not complete until Irish assimilation in 1801. A judge remarked about the behaviour of the early OO...'It is no secret that a persecution is now raging in this country… the only crime is… profession of the Roman Catholic faith. Lawless banditti have constituted themselves judges.'' the Roots of OO & the IRA, etc are the agrarian secret societies.

  • @tirnaog09

The term lawless banditti is strange.Among the early orders members were men of high standing, clergy, militia and yeomanry.

I'm not saying they are all angels but there are some decent men and women in the OO that are being dragged down by a minority who are not behaving in the manner that membership stipulates. The leadership (I believe there is a new man at the helm in Scotland) must address this problem.

I think The OO was formed to defend and IRA was formed to fight

  • @cloneoffred I don't think those on the end of their violence in Ulster in the 1790s would agree. The Defenders (RC) and Peep O Day Boys (Protestants) were the types of secret societies who were the forerunners of the OO. Both groups commited acts of savagery but only the Protestants could legally have guns and usually won (As in the Battle of the Diamond when over 30 RCs were shot dead) A bit like the recent troubles, there were faults on all sides. Garvaghy Road is another issue of note.

  • @tirnaog09

Unfortunately the myth persists that the Peep O'Day(or Break O'Day) Boys were founders of the OO.They were not.The OO was unlinked to any such organisation be it them,Boyne or Orange Societies,it was founded immediately after the Diamond in Loughgall. You are being a bit vague re.the Diamond. The Defenders started the skirmish with guns of their own and were defeated by Protestants defending Winters cottage.

Garvaghy Road is not an issue for the majority who actually live on the road

  • @cloneoffred I bow to your obviously superior knowledge on the historical side of things. What I was alluding to was the proliferation of such societies and how this demonstrated the inter comunal tensions of the time. Wouldn't history have been interesting if the disenfranchised Presbyterians and RCs would have succeeded in 1798? The United Irishmen were imperfect but there was just a glimmer of unity and pride in fighting the obvious wrongs being done to both.

  • @tirnaog09

Yes,I agree it would have been interesting because there would have been so many possibilities to what lay ahead.

There would of course have been the chance of war on a larger scale with France being allowed in through the back door of Ireland which would have altered not just the course of Irish history but Western European.

And of course,if the French had stayed away as some in the RC Church had suggested then Britain may have washed their hands of the island for good

  • @cloneoffred , I doubt the British would have left Ireland in the 1790s They were reeling from losing the Americas and in severe panic about the French revolutionaries using Ireland as a back door. Its such a pity the 1798 rising turned sectarian inplaces as it was an opportunity for all who call themselves Irish to build a decent Ireland for all. With nationalists in the North now over 45% of the population what happens when they're in the majority? They already are in under 18 year olds.

  • @tirnaog09

You are right, the fear over a French "invasion" of Ireland was too great to ignore.

Regarding populations,at this moment more nationalists than ever are content for a devolved Northern Ireland government within the UK.

A similar pattern has occured in Scotland where many unionists have voted for the nationalist SNP but would be unlikely to vote for an independent Scotland.

Either way,the question of Irish unification will never go away.

  • @cloneoffred The Famine song isn't 'perceived' by others as anti Irish, it is without a doubt anti Irish racism. Imagine singing that to Jews or Muslims? That is what I saw and heard Orangemen singing in the Bristol Bar last Summer. That is what many of these bands play at walks. I respect the decent man who loves his church and hates no one, but the organisation is seriously tarnished by a sizeable minority who behave very poorly at times. How can the organisation break this perception of it?

  • @tirnaog09 haha retard, all i said is 'the sash is not sectarian' which it isn't. Everything you said was completely irrelevant to my comment.

  • @alboy1873 , The Sash isn't sectarian but many of the people who sing it are. The 'FTP' add ons make Sctland sound like a medieval backwater. BTW Why resort to abuse? Whats wrong with debate free from such idiocy?

  • Is he related to walter pidgeon?

  • retarded bird

  • It is old but it is beautiful and it's colours they are fine,

It was worn at Derry, Aughrim, Enniskillen and the Boyne.

My father wore it as a youth in bygone days of yore,

And on the Twelfth I love to wear the sash my father wore.

Tell me where is the sectarian part of the Sash. Arseholes!

  • @GersBJK1690 They cant, they dont know how to read or write

  • @GersBJK1690 The Sash is less sectarian than Celtic's 'official' song The Fields of Athenry. The Fields of Athenry lyrics say "...against the famine and the Crown, i rebelled, they cut me down..." How did they rebel? With sectarian IRA type violence against local protestants and the british army of course. The Crown they are singing about is a British and Protestant crown, so again they are being anti-british/english racism and anti-protestantism. TFOA should be banned - start the campaign!

  • even there pets are sectarian.... rangers fans the most heated fans in the world.

  • @boy1belfast You got the wrong word... It's not heated mate it's hottest, but thanks anyway.
