I see comments concerning the K5000S and alchemy, even the kyma, the thing is, in theory, yeah they are additive so they could sound like the k5000s, but in practice it's a big pain to do it, secondly, just like with alchemy, you have a different source of inspiration with starting material, so it is a matter of sheer user enjoyment, not duplication, I own all three, not selling any of them. fizmo and k5000s are my two favorite digital synths hands down, just get a neptune 2 for analog thaz it.
@gridsleep I got mine for $350 with the memory expansion, wizoo book, a case, and it's mint condition. It was up on craigslist brooklyn a few months ago. Best purchase I've made. Keep an eye out, they're out there.
I used to own one of these years ago, but I used it to make industrial music, i'd like to get me another one, they are really cool for fx and some nasty leads I found, but you really have to fluff around with it, Absynth is fairly close as far as VSTi's go... but that is my opinion.
back in 2000 i was close to buying the k5000, but i
decided for the yamaha ex7.
it sounds good, but it has some too digital, FM-like appeal to me, and with yamaha´s analog synthesis in the ex-series and the great natural sounds as well, it was clear what to take.
does the k5000s care about natural instrument sounds at all?
@vlad1gavrilchik: I think it should be possible to built a similar synth with SynthMaker (128 partials additive synthsis). I think sanity wanted to say it sounds cheap. But I disagree. Well programmed additive sounds are wonderful. Factory presets of synthesizers are usually way below anything a specific synth is capable of.
While K5000 certainly does sound magnificent, Camel Audio Alchemy does all K5000 could do, and MORE. (Has up to 600 partials, while K5000 had up to 64 per source).
I wasn't truly impressed with the presets...GREAT as they sounded. I mean, it can do good formant-filtered, sequenced analog effects - like any well-equipped analog could. But what I was expecting was some real needle-granular, swirling-vectorlike, crunchy digital realmscapes that are only possible on something like that. Perhaps that's where geek-tweeks like me come in.
Yeah i was expecting that too. But it can do that. Just a matter of programming wich is not the easiest on that beast. But i don't know if i would buy one these days. Well if you want to get into additive Synthesis there are not many Alternatives around. + It has a great Keyboard action and looks great. Oh well...the money...the space ;)
I dig my K5000w. I go to it for inspiration. Its not a synth for getting projects done quickly. It always invites further tweaking and eats up time. In a good way. The manual is the worst ever. There are imprtant sections where the writer realised they had no idea, and surrendered by putting in a "?". Im not joking. Nice keys.
additive synthesis is based on sine waves.. the soundblaster uses sine waves to modulate sine waves (FM Modulation).. that is why they sound similar... additive synthesis is way more complex
The reason it sounds like FM is because the K5000 not only used additive, it used AM...BTW, any 'FM' synth (which is actually PM) could technically do AM...via the feedback loops. Hear it from a tech geek and you shall be learned...now I'm off to Master Yoda.
This was one of those synths that you could actually buy low and sell high. I got it at a close out price at Guitar Center and kept it for about a year and sold it for $200 profit. I must say-I rarely can do that.
I bought a brand new back in 97 from Sam Ash for $300. The sound was incredible but I never managed to figure it out, no one did. Everybody lovede the sounds, it was actually my "best" keyboard but the navigation was against intuitive and the user manual terrible. Just to mention that it doesn't even tell you the poliphony!
That was a steal! I wanted K5k so badly that i gave Waldorf Q rack and got K5r + MCB. No money involved.. So one could say that i paid approximately 500-600€ more. :D

These must be as good as I've heard and read. Nobody wants to sell theirs. I have yet to see a K5000S on eBay. I'd buy it in a NY minute.

There is one on eBay right now, I'd buy it but it doesn't deliver to Europe! :( Here's to you, then - hope you get it!

@TheReasonableLogic I have a K5000W but the additive synthesis doesn't work. It needs a new main board. What fun. :/

anyone know anyone that can fix these?.. I have two broken ones..

how do you get to the appegiators on this keyboard i have a k5000w and dont know how to get to them
BIGSABMUSIC 11 months ago
@BIGSABMUSIC The K5000W has a sequencer and no arpeggiator. The K5000S and K5000R have the arpeggiator and no sequencer. The K5000 has neither.

so can you actually make your own custom arpeggiators on this thing? also does it have a tracking system for recording songs?

@yermyahu: A common problem: Bad factory presets. Never decide to buy or dismiss a synth based on its factory presets. Try it out by yourself.

lol the additive synthesis sounds often remind me on the 5000s of old soundblaster fm
