I don't think the pilot did a bad job. It is a mythe that large airliners can land intact on the ocean. This guy tried to hold off too long on full flaps to try drop the speed a little further but the left wing went down.

The pilot in NY that brought his plane down intact on the Hudson River was highly skilled but he was also incredibly lucky. The river was flat as a millpond and he managed to keep the wings dead level, not easy close to or below stall speed.

I might add to my previous answer that, after looking at the video again, I think the reason the left wing went down so suddenly was that there was an onshore wind that lifted the right wing when the plane got very close to the surface.

Once the left wing touched (the plane was still doing at least 130 mph) that was the end of it. I think the pilot did a very good job but was not lucky.
