I'm just discovering Morrissey and the Smiths. I am getting use to Morrissey and his unique brilliance, but my God, Johnny Marr is effing incredibly amazing. What a genius!
everyoone seems to forget how important Marr was to the Smith's, he practically made the foundation for every single Smith's song and yet Morrissey seems to be presented as 'the genius behind it all'
@18andover Thank you. While I don't care for his music, he's a legitimately talented musician who can sing and play multiple instruments...better than a lot of other pop artists these days.
@18andover sorry but thats a horrible thing to say. seriusly he is just there to make money. people making fun of him is great! the people are finally waking up!
Sorry, but i'm sick of all this "Mozza worship", I love the Smiths, but personally can't stand MoRRISSEY. His ego ultimately was bigger than the band and was the cause of their break up, so how the fans can ignore the facts is beyond me. The real reason the smiths were so great was because of the sum of the parts, not because of Morrissey, and I think people are quick to forget this.
@moewishaw The Smiths was Morrissey and Johnny Marr. Morrissey was the front man and Smiths fans are obviously going to adore him. And no, it wasn't just Morrissey that caused the breakup of the band; the huge pressure on Marr having to manage the band on top of playing in it, not to mention he was only in his early 20's, also contributed majorly. All bands have to break up, it's better they break up and leave an amazing legacy than fade into mediocrity.
@moewishaw i agree. tbh i think the essence of the smiths is in marrs guitar playing and the other members (including morrissey) finish it off perfectly.
@moewishaw Amen to that. While I like some Morrissey songs, they lack the incredibly delicate instrument interplay which only the Smiths can offer.
I think I prefer the other recording of this song, but I think that's 'cause I heard that one first. I miss the quicker tempo and more colourful reverb
@stusafc37 Lyrically, he's brilliant no question about it! But he can be a bit too much of an annoying, preachy little fuckwit at times. It's the sound of The Smiths I love more than anything, they're brilliant musicians... alot of the time I couldn't give a fuck what Morrissey has to say.
@tcvicesquad I totally feel the same way, but i kinda get the feeling that Morrissey sang like that just to poke peoples buttons. Which makes me like him a little more than i normally would.
@moewishaw true to a certain extent, you cant deny his talent as a lyricst though, the smiths wouldn't have made it with a different frontman, or guitarist, bassist and drummer. I think his ego is much bigger post-smiths, if you look at interviews during the smiths he often complements the rest of the band.
Just listen to the band behind Morrissey during The Smiths and Morrissey (the band). The comparison is not even close. One is a ground-breaking sound, the other a studio band.
The great irony is that Morrissey (the performer) has become a caricature of his former self and embodies some of the exact positions he railed against as a youth (See Paint a Vulgar Picture.)
I'm sick and tired of "24 people don't know about music" isn't it allow to dislike something? grow up and change the bloody subject, please for mental health.

@barbafant yes indeed but it is complex, I personaly like classical music, Brahms, Litz, Mussogorski, Korsakov and some other masters but that doesnt make me think that I'm right over someone who likes... @whoareyou342 Johnny Marr. Great guitar player and hugely influential in the UK. Unique style that is very difficult to copy. Now in The Cribs and recently worked on the score for the film 'Inception'.
@whoareyou342 The Peel Sessions weren't recorded live. They were recorded at Maida Vale studios in London by the BBC (often criticised for their sterile sound). The Smiths did have a second guitarist for a while for their live shows (recorded on the album 'Rank') but Johnny Marr played all his own guitars in the studio as far as I know.
