WHY.. WHY.. WOULD THEY CUT THIS GREAT SONG OUT OF THE IOW DVD??
AND WERE IS IT NOW?? I WISH THEY WOULD JUST RELEASE THE CONCERT DVD'S JUST AS THEY WERE MADE LIVE! WISH THEY WOULD RELEASE THE COMPLETE SHOW ALL THE WAY TO THEM WALKING OFF THE STAGE. BYE THE WAY, THANKS FOR UPLOADING THE AUDIO OF THE SONG!!!
I had to write a paper where I had to compare The Who and Led Zeppelin, and had tell why Zeppelin was better.... THAT was a hard paper to write. I <3 The Who so much. Moonie is the best :)
This band, at this point in time... There's just something about the combo of the delicate side of Pete's compositions and the raw energy of four guys who excel in their craft kicking out the jams like nobody else.
How kick ass is this? I love how the chemistry of the band is working in this song and this whole concert as well. This is the period when The Who were so potent. I would give anything to see them in their prime!
It's certainly possible this was never recorded for the film. Obviously, we're all fans of "Sparks," but if you're the square director (and he is a square judging by the DVD featurette), this was simply an instrumental that made a good time to reload all the cameras. It looked like it was just a couple guys with hand-held cameras, nothing like the professional filming of today.
No coverage but imagine having been there with the thunderous rhythm section adn the frontline of Townshend and Daltrey cooking up a storm.....imagine seeing the greatest ever band at its zenith. I'd pay a grand for the privilege.
@luksmr88 Sparks was actually composed in 1967, the same tune/riff is played at the end of the song Rael from 1967's 'Who Sell Out' album. Pete reinvented it for Tommy as 'Sparks'.
i HAVE the dvd and they did the set in the wrong way as the yperformed it and left out half of tommy i have a cassette of the entire show from then and it is almost 4 hours long
the footage doesn't exist. All over the dvd they had to cut visuals from other songs into performances they were missing sections of. It was almost thirty years that this stuff was lying unused.
Townshend and Daltrey should give me the drumming gig with The Who. I'm not being big-headed, but my "Sparks" is better than Zak's "Sparks". Take a look at my page. Wouldn't you agree?! :)
I thought Tanglewood was the best version of Sparks, until I heard this. It's criminal that this isn't on the IOW DVD.

the hardest part is knowing that there probably won't be a rock band this good again...like the samurai said, you can't re-live an era...

@WHOMEWHOYOU Unfortunately, the original film is either too far gone or complete dust by now. That's why they edited the IOW dvd the way they did.

@SteveResin I always thought that it was underture. But, you have a point, sparks and underture have that same melody, exept in different keys.
