For my money, this is the best version of this song. Not the most musically interesting, but still the best because of the attitude, the crowd, the rhythm section, the drive. This is what Lou Reed is all about.
@mspanzergruppen ... agree with ya there... UFO almost went "supergroup" status if personel could have kept it together... last band to break huge was GUNS & ROSES.... but back in end of 60's and thru 70's there were really awesome big bands !!
@mspan You bet I had a blast in the seventies. I turned 12 in 1970 and I turned 21 in 1979. I definitely love seventies music. And all the rest that went along with loving music in the seventies.
My best friend used to hide in the wardrobe of hotels with me Sweet Jane) ... that I used to pay for ... and I later married .. Marcus lidster ..... xxxx
When my parents used to bust me on a regular basis they happened to find my copy of white light white heat that i'd been using to roll on.which was their cue to ask " they look like a bunch dope addicts -do you want to turn out like THEM ?'. I was inspired to seek the answer to that question & responded by stashing my Sweet Jane in their room .Nothing prompts creativity like repression.
I have the album on vinyl and I have the Lou Reed Live album that appears to be from the same gig, with same line-up. Wonderful version of 'Oh Jim' on it.
@0ooHAYDENoo0 Oddly enough Lou has stated that the Junkies version is the best and purest version he's ever heard. Personally I like the live 1974 version with the long intro the best.
Used to see the velvets live at La Cave in cleveland, walked right by lou and the rest on the flippin sidewalk on their way to the gig. those were the daze
Always loved the sax in this version, grew up on this shit and it helpen me distinguish good music from shit music like mostly everything we see on TV.
Funny commentary by Lou and a lot of fun. Take No Prisoners a great, original record. Some of Lou's comments on the record would fall foul of the PC enforcers today. Fuck these little people.
Saw the complete band w/ nico, across from what was going to be the electric factory in Philly, I became experianced that night, what a night and what a Band , thanks LOUUUUU, saw him in Richmond Va. and he kicked their ASSES with that Band he took to Germany, The man still Rocks the HOUSE
I love the Velvet Underground as true avante garde. Avant-garde (French pronunciation: [avɑ̃ɡaʁd]) means "advance guard" or "vanguard".
it was the true merger of art and music which has never been duplicated again. I was born in 1968 I wll trade my date of birth for acceptance into the band
This IS from Take no prisoners. double live i think from 76. It had a sticker on it said this album is offensive. its brilliant. i dont think he would have been on cocaine. prob some sort of amph.
@loksartre Must be from 'take no prisoners'. Very cool double album. Think he's on cocain or something. Walk on the wildside is also funny with the elaboration on how the song came to being.
lou reed can "bend"a word like guitar masters "bend"a note,.,.the V.U. were WAYYY AHEAD of their time, its took decades for people to catch them up,even their drug references were filled with regret+warnings to others,,,a flirt with the scene is enough ,get out alive,,change heroin to heroine in praise of mothers that created us ,and all women that have suffered,,,,,,,,,AMEN
@rheaprinzmetal O/K that "Girl" still looks like the great Dennis Hopper, he was a looker in his younger days anyway. You don`t think it was Dennis on one of his trips do you,Ha Ha,Thanks for informing me, I do love Lou Reeds sound & this track in particular. Keep on rocking.
One day in the early 1970's I was walking into the University of California campus in Berkeley from Telegraph Avenue and heard the greatest version of "Sweet Jane" in my whole life. Just one guy with a cheap electric guitar and a tiny Pignose battery amp (remember those?), playing and singing really fast, but with a lot of rhythm. I was overwhelmed. I thought that Lou himself could learn from this cat. Sometimes the greatest rock of all is in the streets!
@BobBerkeley DUDE YOU ARE SOOOO FUCKIN RIGHT... I LIVE IN A TOWN WIT A LOT OF STREET MUSICIANS... I LOVE EM!!!! SO MUCH MORE FEELING AND HEART COMES FROM THEIR SOULS...
Lou's the MAN! Grew up on Rock and Roll Animal. When I got pulled over by the cops as a kid, I told em my name was Louis Reed! My friends all started laughing their asses off and the cops arrested me for giving false info.
Brother, I feel for you. But I've got to say, it doesn't change the nature of the beast (or, in this case You). You did what you did and you may not ever understand why you did it. But you did do it. And at the time you didn't care about anyone but you. Then again, NA or whatever program may help you-that's awesome and I wish you luck. Whether or not you kids resent you is THEIR issue. All you can do is be there for em' (if that's your thing). Reed is simply celebrating sweet living'.
Great, of course, but the live slow version from the VU is probably the most beautiful thing I have ever heard recorded. I think it's on "1969." That's the version the Cowboy Junkies copied. The only bad thing was I believe Moe was out-pregnant, so....too much cymbal. Still, perfect singing by Lou.
